Re: Alesis Vortex Midi controller

Never even heard of it. There are certainly more popular choices, but if you're sure you want it, go ahead. Otherwise, one of the most documented sets of keyboards are the Native Instruments series. If you want more certainty when buying keyboards, chances are you'd want to go with them. I mean, not only do I have no idea what the keyboard is like, I have even less of an idea about the accessibility of the software to use it.

I'm wondering that as well. I found a Collection with six different versions of the Sonivox synthesizer. There's no file with a size of about 13 MB, so I'm very interested in trying that one out.

Re: playing midi in reaper? how is it done.

If all you did was just slap it on the track, yeah, that won't work because the data is there, but there's nothing to play it. You need to throw a virtual instrument on the same track, or on a different one and set up a midi send. This can be anything, including something like Sforzando that can play sf2 files. But if you go the soundfont route, you actually need a sound font loaded in or you'll get nothing. The easiest way to set up a virtual instrument is to go to insert > insert virtual instrument on new track. This does the steps of arming the track, turning on the monitoring if it isn't already, and switching the output to all channels midi with all midi sources automatically for you. If you just added it as an effect to an already existing track, you would have to do these things yourself, or you would get no audio.

First of all, wrong topic. Second, keep dreaming. As much as I would also like a BrailleNote emulator, I don't think it is possible since the BN runs on specialized hardware, and It isn't mainstream enough for many people to be interested in emulating It.

It would be nice if someone could dump a brailleNote classic rom or brailleNote mPower rom and get it to run in a virtual machine somehow. Then we could have keysoft on windows again, even though it would be rather old.

Re: recording 2 diffrent midi items on the same track with reaper?

You can't do that in Reaper.  If you want to record the same instrument on one track you can set the track to midi overdub, but you'd have to duplicate the track into a seperate track, then go into your FX menu and pick whatever secondary instrument you want to be used with the same midi information.  Hope that helps!

Re: Keyboards and Midi Controlers

You should be fine then. If you're not sure about Native, the other thing you could do, as long as the Yamaha has midi capability, either through USB or midi interface, is start with the Yamaha and get something like the M32 from Native later. You use the M32 to load any Native sounds, and use your larger Yamaha as a midi controller. I was doing that with an M32 and an M-Audio Axiom, another midi controller, until I realized the Axiom had 49 keys, not 61 like I thought. So I invested in a larger controller and figured I'd just stick with Native. Now I'm using the M32 on my laptop and intend to get a portable audio interface to have a little portable rig in case I need it.

Re: Keyboards and Midi Controlers

It really depends on what you want to do. The Komplete Kontrol series of keyboards are accessible, as long as you're using them with Native Instruments stuff. That means the instruments are run on a computer. The Komplete Kontrol is just a midi controller with some neat extra features when paired with Native's stuff, it doesn't make sounds on its own. I should add that there are other companies that have stuff that uses the Native accessible standard too.If you want something that you can just turn on and play, then the Yamaha would be a better fit. But understand, you'll probably need to memorize a lot. Patch numbers, e.g. that one organ you like is 253 while the other is 29, possibly menus, stuff like that. If you want the most accessibility, in terms of speech feedback and all, you'll want some sort of Komplete Kontrol keyboard. I started with the M32 myself, which is related to the cheaper A series of keyboards. I eventually upgraded to an S61 Mk2. Personally, I'd go with Native. You have access to way better sounds than most keyboards you're going to get. I like Yamaha keyboards, but I see the PSR-E463 is $300 on Amazon. You can get a Komplete A61 for slightly less than that. I think the upgrade to the next level of Komplete software is like a hundred bucks, or you could save and get the next upgrade.  The only drawback to the A series is that it only has one pedal input. It also doesn't have aftertouch, but your Yamaha probably doesn't either. I'm going to give you the link to the video that made me go and start my journey into Komplete.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd9SMcTgffoYou should be able to find videos of the PSR-E463 on Youtube and compare. I'd also say if you're seriously considering Yamaha, see if you can get somewhere to get your hands on one to see what kind of controls it has. If it has a lot of buttons and such, it should, you'll be good, but if it uses something like a touch screen, for example, that's probably going to be inaccessible. I'll also add you can even use some instruments that aren't mapped to NKS, but do allow you to use presets. For instance, here's a review I did of a harmonium, a reed organ, that costs $49. You buy it, add it into Native's stuff, and you've got these new presets you didn't have before.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxF7Z1DQDSYI also did a review of a chord organ, in case you want to check that out. I know I've really been pushing Native Instruments here, so let me say this. As I said I like Yamaha keyboard. I don't know if all of the PSR series let's you do this, but I know for some you can load a preset and modify characteristics of the sounds. I haven't touched a Yamaha in ages though so I can't say how doable this is, and of course, you won't get any feedback, you'll just have to know which buttons do what. But you can probably do it, and there's something to be said for just sitting down, firing something up, and being able to play as fast as humanly possible. Of course, my main computer still has a standard drive and takes ages to boot up, so maybe that's just me.If you're new to keyboard and all of this stuff, Native will take a bit more effort to set up, but you can get a lot of help. Once you do, it's honestly the most accessible keyboard setup I can think of, and it's easily expandable. The keyboards are about the same price, so if you're comfortable spending that kind of money to get into playing keyboard, either one should be fine, in terms of learning to play. I think the Yamaha would probably be fairly accessible, in the sense that you'd be able to figure out how to use most of the features, and it would have everything you need built-in.You wouldn't need to buy a professional sound card/interface for your computer for instance, although if you were going to record, you'd want one eventually anyway. You might not need this if you're on a mac, and I can play my M32 using standard Windows audio on a laptop sound card. So again, for learning to play, that will work. But for serious recording, you'd eventually want an interface.Again, all of that having been said, in terms of accessibility once you're up and running with whatever, Native's Komplete Kontrol wins hands down, as the above video, the first one, should demonstrate. You're not going to get any sort of feedback like that from the Yamaha.

There's another solution.Try doing step recording. You can record few notes of a cord once, and again record the other notes of that over that. This is time consuming, but if all that you want is some basic comping, then it might get the job done. Also, I believe you have to change the recording mode in Reaper somewhere in order to record notes over existing notes.

Re: Problem with reapers virtual midi keyboard. is there a fix?

This isn't a problem with reaper, it's a problem with your computer's keyboard. It is not able to register certain key combinations. For this to work reliably, you will need a different keyboard with something called N-key rolover, which is something that allows every key to register even if they are all pressed at the same time. Unfortunately, since this a feature that is not required for every day use, it's generally reserved for gaming keyboards, which can become a bit more expensive.

Its technically a problem but actually is not. Haha what happens is that sometimes computers are configured to allow a few (or more), keypresses at the same time. On top of that sometimes also you cant press a certain key convination. For example, i cant do a minor nine chord, though i have the keys that supocelly can do it, but the computer for some reason doesn't allow me to press this certain key convination, but it varies from computer to computer. For that reason (and to have more space and freedom with my hands), i had to purchase a controller. Still i do use the virtual keyboard from time to time, hehe.

Re: Anyone knows a better free virtuall midi sinthesiser than mcrosofts wa

To clarify, VMS is its own MIDI device. This is useful for MIDI sequencing with programs such as QWS, where VSTs and the like are not natively supported (though can be done). From what I can tell, QWS and similar programs are not DAWs, as they can only deal with MIDI.@haily_merry, VMS itself cannot play MIDI files, instead, you should use it with programs that support MIDI ports as I believe VMS aims to be one.

Re: Anyone knows a better free virtuall midi sinthesiser than mcrosofts wa

I think the purpose of this thing is more for playing midi files. Btw, sorry for going slightly off topic, but I'm having trouble configuring soundfonts. I've added the soundfont just fine, but I'm a little confused about what I should do from here. I keep getting a notification about needing to press the key on the number row corresponding to a device to assign the soundfont to that device, but like, how am I supposed to know which devices are assigned each number lol? Also, um, I thought the hole point of this thing is that it's, well, it's own virtual midi device? It also says I can press control + click, whatever that means, to assign a soundfont to all devices. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: Anyone knows a better free virtuall midi sinthesiser than mcrosofts wa

@Karlitos, the installer should just ask you for administrator privileges when necessary. @Deathstar, This can not be used for Reaper. If you did want to use soundfonts with Reaper then I suggest using the BassMIDI VST. If your DAW does natively support MIDI ports you'll be able to use it, as is also the case for MIDI editors such as QWS.

Re: Help me, playing with a midi controler

Here's what I did, I need to fix some stuff but you can hear the two reviews I did here.https://www.youtube.com/user/khomustuLet me say BTW that this is all on Windows, if you're on a mac you'll have to figure out what works for you or get somebody else to help you. That having been said:1. Download OBS, Open Broadcast Studio. Install it, obviously.2. Follow the excellent articles on setting it up. If you want to record locally and upload, just use record instead of streaming.3. Go here and get ASIO for OBS and install it.https://github.com/Andersama/obs-asio4. Install Reaper, get it up and running. When you install, there's a part where you can select components. Open "optional functionality", and install ReaRoute. See here for more help.https://reaperaccessibility.com/index.php/Main_Page5. Run Reaper, add your keyboard tracks and microphone, or whatever else you want.6. Make the master track visible, ctrl+alt+m.7. Hit alt+applications key, and add a ReaRoute output on the master, I think it's like ReaRoute 1l 2r or such.8. Run OBS.9. Add sources, specifically an audio input capture. When you do it should take you to properties. Pick ReaRoute, then you'll have to tab to two combo boxes. They'll each say mute, I don't quite remember what you change them to, maybe ReaRoute 1l and 2r, but it's pretty easy to figure out.10. You should be good to go. If not. just close everything and try it again, I don't think it worked for me the first time but it did the second.

@17Csound with a midi keyboard is fun.  I don't know how productive it is, as my interest is DSP stuff along the lines of synthizer, not getting music out.  Read the manual.  If you don't feel lost, it's for you.  Experimenting will tell you a lot more than I can here, though I will say that half these languages are the kind of thing you need a specialized background or the right kind of experiences to get much out of.

HAVE YOU TRIED DIGGING INTO TRACKERS? A FIEW ARE SURPRISINGLY ACCESSIBLE ENOUGH to be useful for serious stuff, at least if you're not dealing with effects. I use famitracker for nes music and bambootracker for fm music (it's ment for pc98 specificly, but it's braud ranging instrument support allows it to work for instruments from things like the sega genesis and the like, in fact the next version will add support for mucom88, the driver that Yuzo koshiro used for his music). to get instruments, I usually extracted .opm files from mdx files, then I used wolstand's bank editor to extract them to .wopni (one of the formats supported by bambootracker). I made at least a hundred bambootracker modules in various instrument sets, ranging from predictable zun early touhou type shit to prepriatary psgs like the one namco used in their arcade games.

Hi,I have an exciting update for you all.I downloaded an audio codec called DivXAudioCompressor, and after installing this and Direct Music Producer in a Windows XP VM, I converted the compressed wince_gm.dls into an uncompressed version. I then converted this uncompressed DLS into a soundfont using Awave Studio. You can get the soundfont, as well as the uncompressed DLS from http://grossgang.com/utilities/wince_gm.zipEdit:I also installed the codec I talked about above on Windows 10, and the compressed wince_gm.dls now loads in Winamp's MIDI plugin.

Re: How to make music with out midi keyboard?

@15Supercollider and ChucK are almost exclusively for audio experimentation with almost no scoring capability.  They're aimed more at the algorithmic music crowd.  ChucK itself is only half documented, and I've never played with it much.In general the languages you're looking at are used by researchers and experimenters more than anyone else, and unless you're interested in how instruments themselves work, they're not worth your time. The limitation of most of them is incredibly poor support for feedback, which is incredibly important for most instruments.  What I mean is feeding the output of the synthesis back into the input.  For example, to simulate a flute, you might use two parallel delay lines connected with a filter at both ends and some math to model how air works at the ends.  That's a real example, it's called a 1-dimensional waveguide and is how a lot of plugins work.If you have a Midi keyboard, in other words, they can be fun.  But they won't help you if you don't.  In most of these you can't do that unless it already provides the flute model, and if it offers feedback it'll be in big blocks with a large minimum delay and thus useless for that sort of thing. You get to pick between relatively good support for note arrangement, etc, usually with midi output, or a bunch of tools to design your own instruments and effects with terrible scoring capabilities.  I'd suggest just reading the manuals fore any of the ones you're interested in; you can tell which category it falls in very very quickly.
