Re: My new view about spoken menus in mainstream games

Depends on the game. If something like Hearthstone or Football Manager had interface accessibility they wouldn't need anything else, as they have no environments to navigate.. it's all interface.

Re: My new view about spoken menus in mainstream games

@TheBlindSaiyan, The campaign mode is not accessible, but Horde mode can be somewhat playable. There's an option called Fabricator Ping, so you use left bumper to ping where the fabricator is, and when it gets to d-major, you are right on top of it. There's target lock so if you face a target, you can aim down sights with left trigger and it locks on. From there, you can press the left stick in to mark the target, and it sometimes names the enemies. Each weapon, though, has it's own range. It is still not the easiest game in the world, nor is it completely 100% accessible, but it is getting there. Gears also has a feature called Tour of Duty which fully reads, the objectives and medals you can earn.

Re: My new view about spoken menus in mainstream games

I would absolutely, love, an accessible Civilisation.I'm wondering if the next Age of Empires might have any acccessibility, because the definitive edition put in some (very basic) narration but it was nowhere near enough. Also, believe it or not I'm really looking forward to the next Forza, if they do assists and if they start doing menu accessibility for that, well, that's really exciting.

Re: My new view about spoken menus in mainstream games

Of course menu accessibility isn't everything. The trouble is that games like crackdown 3 are already finishd. From what I know, crackdown is an open world fps, and once a game like that is finished, retrofitting it for accessibility is really difficult, time consuming, and certainly not good for profits. If the next crackdown game were to be built with access in mind from the start, then great. You'd be able to get a lot further. Right now though, menu naration is probably the best we'll get. Same with minecraft. The menus and chats may read, but the core gameplay is simply too visual at the moment. The best thing people could do would be to create a minecraft clone based on the information contained on the minecraft wiki and other fan sites, with access considerations so it would be playable even if you couldn't see the blocks. And finally, someone please nudge 2k games until they promis to make civilization VII accessible whenever that comes out...

Re: My new view about spoken menus in mainstream games

I agree, they aren't everything but they are a step in the right direction.I love being able to hop onto Gears 5, check my objetives and take a crack at them, even though I'm restrited to beginner difficulty for now due to target lock. Marking targets is a bit inconsistent. I still think that game could use more audio cues though, such as if you have a lock, as long as it's not an annoying cue. Haptic cues are OK but the trouble with that option is this game already has a lot of haptics for if you get hit, if you take cover, and since you are getting shot at a lot, I don't think extra haptics would help as much, I think they'd confuse. It'd help to learn if something's above or below, there's an enemy called a Kestral in Horde, that flies above you and you have to aim at the engines. Same with guardians and Matriarchs, you have to hit matriarchs in the back, although they are possible to mark sometimes.

My new view about spoken menus in mainstream games

Hello all. So if you have been on this forum, you have seen games like Crackdown 3 and Division 2 getting spoken menus. I used to think this was what made a game worth money, but that's not the case. Is it bad that they add this feature? Not at all. It's a step in the right direction, and it's honestly the best thing they can do. It's good to see that devs aren't just jumping at accessibility and are taking the little baby steps to begin to understand how it works, and eventually, we may get more than spoken menus. Although spoken menus are good, they're not everything
