Hi.Ok, thanks, I quite like to hear that they have found a way to include the new players in the roster, somethinng they also do with EA sports old MVP baseball 2k5 which is also modded every year.By the way, do you have found a way to play the game on windows 10? Or isn't that possible at all?Regarding the guide, I will keep my eye on this topic.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

@simbaInteresting questions, and I can only give you positive answers. When a new player starts playing for a certain team and his name is not common, for example, they take peaces of certain names to combine one file and they use this for the name. The interface and rosters are virtually always updated, so if the Hamburg freezers aren't there in real life, update the interface and the rosters and you won't see them in the game either. I'll be honest, I'm disappointed that not a lot of blind people are into this game. It's fully accessible with jaws, and there is no other sports game as accessible as this one where you can even play full seasons or a dynasty with your favorite team. I will write a quick guide in the coming days anyway, so keep checking this topic.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Hi.Sorry for beeing off for that long time, but it was a bit hecktic over here.I actually like that they continue to update the rosters of the game, even though that raises a question for me.Let's say that a team drafts a promising player and uses him in a game, but the player wasn't there the last few years, how would the modders get the player name into the play by play commentary for the game?Would they just take the file from the newly released NHL game or how do they do that. Also, are they focusing just on the NHL, or are they updating for example the DEL league? Cause when I look in to the team, I still have the Hamburg freezers, even though they left after the last season due to reasons that are unknown to me.Maybe, ffor those who are still interested in that game, and are not interested to look through all of this topic, you maybe could write a guide on how to set up the game, play it and maybe some playing tips, that's ju
st an idea from me, I don't know if you would do that.Greetings: Moritz.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

I don't have much time to write this post so I will try to be quick, if you have questions let me know. Assuming you play with a controller, your gamepad changes your strategies. There is no sound when you use it, but the menus are not wrapping so it's easy to know which strategies you selected. Use the arrows in game to change strategies. Up and down controls your offensive strategies, left and right is for defensive. Here are the offensive strategies starting from the first one up.Full Attack: Players are only thinking about offense.Aggressive: Defense will take some chances.Standard: A good mix of cautious and aggresssive play.Conservative: Players are cautious about getting caught up ice.Defend Lead: Players will not take any chances. And here are the defensive strategies from left to rightProtect Net: Players collapse in the defensive zone. Contain Puck: Players will stay between the puck and the net. Normal: A solid mix of one on one and zone defense. Puck Side Attack: Players on the strong side attack the puck. High Pressure: Your team is at their most aggressive.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

yeah it's the right option. When you don't have the puck, it all depends which player you were controling lost the puck. If it's a right winger, I'll usually go in my zone on the right side of the ice and vice versa. If I was a defenseman, I'll switch player so he becomes controlled by the CPU. Knowing how the rink is made and where you should position yourself is a matter of knowing defensive strategies and stuff. If you have an idea where the net is you could position yourself easily in front too, that'll prevent the opposing team from passing the puck across

Apart from listening to hockey games, I don't really have any tips on that. The ice where you play is a big rectangle with your zone on the south end, the center ice zone at center and your opponent's zone north. I'm not sure how I could explain it better than that. That's why really knowing a lot about the sport of hockey is going to help you a lot.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

It is the right way to set shot aim/line changes, however keep in mind that whenever you play a game as the away team you will need to change the ones on the left. I use the poke check / saucer pass button to take the puck away, but one mistake I used to make and that you are probably making too is using the change player button when you don't have the puck. Instead, when you don't have the puck, skate towards your zone and trust your AI team mates to get the puck back. If you keep switching players you might switch to a defenseman and leave opening for your opponent to score on you.

I heard that you can body check him or steal the puck off him, is that right?2: Do i need to just tap the pas button? I heard that when you hit the button for longer, that the pass gets harder, so, how long do I need to press the button? And while we are at it, is it always save to use the regular pass or when do I need to use the saucer pass?

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Okay, there are definitely some issues.First, I feel like you were not skating in the right direction all the time, although you did have a few good scoring chances. You also picked up on how to win faceoffs pretty well. First go to your options menu, then display, make sure the camera setting is set to "always down". The setting you need to change is somewhere at the bottom. Then go to AI Options, and click on basic, then go down to pass/shoot and do a left click on that. You want to set passing assist to 7 so at least you will have more control on your passes and they will go to a player of your team without needing to aim much. After selecting a team, go to starting line-up, and left click on the manual options for edit lines and shot aim, and set them to auto. Your players were tired as hell because the line changes were not happening, and you definitely should not bother changing lines especially since you didn't play the game long enough to g
et used to that, that's why those should be set on auto. Let me know when this is done so I can write tips in another post. So far so good though, and you'll get used to those.

Hi.Well, I did that, but strangely it doesnt work as it should. The other thing still is that I have the script error all the time, and some kind of file, related to the shootout mode is missing, even though i couldn't find anything on the site.By the way, I have set the AI stats to a value of 5, things like the puck control, shot acuracy and all the other stuff, can I leave them at that value or would you recommend other values for a beginner player?

Like I mentionned you need to configure the controller to work with the game. Simply go to options, and configure controller. Select your controller and then simply left click on the number next to the specific action, and press the button you want for this action. Here's an examplePass/switch player 1wristshot/slap shot/goalise save 3just left click on the numbers and press the button you want for the action.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Hi.Well, with the tips I ment some form of audio hint coming up in certain part of the game, but I fixed the problem. Apparently, for training perposes, I switched to the beginner difficulty, so that was the reason.I really like the roster updates, it's quite cool to see that not just the NHL teams are updated, but also the teams from the DEL for example. But there is a problem with the game I am having, but which I found out just yesturday. When one of my players gets the puck, no of the buttons seem to work, I can't move or do something else with my joystick, I don't know what that is.Also, the error with the shootout practice remains.I am using an xBox 360 controler for windows to play the game, just to clarify that.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

I don't know what you mean by "how to disable the tips that keep jumping at me all the time"As for strategies, it all depends who controls the puck. I suggest you to google the team you are playing so you know if the player controling the puck is a defenseman or a forward. Generally you want to pass the puck to a forward whenever possible since they skate faster and have better puck handling skills than a defenseman.

I can't also seem to grab the puck of the stick from other players, could you help me a bit with that maybe?

Hi.Well you know, it's always those small things that I have to find out with your help, but it's quite the good feeling when you manage it to slap the puck into your opponents goal in the end, isn't it?I guess I will reinstall that whole game together with the mod.The things I plan to do is install the game, extract the interface.exe into the games folder, and install the rosters correctly by copying the files in to the correct place. One thing I am wondering is, how does the shoot out work? I hear a whistling sound and then someone scates around and shoots the puck somewhere, but I don't know who that actualy is.Is this mode like a mode where I have to defend from incoming goals or what do I need to do.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

If the commentator does not say the player's name when he receives the puck, you haven't installed the pbp. They can be find in the mod, download the file and extracted in your c:\nhl 2004 folder. You can also go to shootout practice to know what sound does what. First, go to options and then display, and set the camera to the "always up" option. This way, the home team's zone is south, and the away team's is north. So to score you have to skate north and get setup in your opponent's zone. I hope this all make sense, that's why I really think people who really want to try this game should be familiarized with the sport of hockey first. It's definitely worth it if you're a big fan

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Hmm. From what I can tell the commentator is supposed to say the names of the players most of the time, so that would mean you might not have extracted everything. You need the rosters to be properly installed, and you need to follow the instructions because there are 3 files that goes in your documents/nhl 2004 folder from the .rar file.I know where the puck is by listening with head phones where the passes ends up being. It's pretty hard to describe what sound does what, if I could find a way to record voice plus gameplay that would be a lot easier

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Hi.I tried out the controller settings, but I am not sure if they are working, that's due to some problems I am having.First, I have the problem that there are no names which are announced. The comentator says for example things like picked up the lose puck, or just passed out in front, but I don't know who has the puck and of which team he is a member off. Also, I have the problem that offten the faceoff happens, and four secconds later, the opponent team scores a goal, that happens for maybe three or four times, than it's silent again.I also don't know which sounds are what. I hear for example a constant scratching sound, is that the puck or are these just the scates of the other players? And if so, I don't know the puck sound?I also sometimes hear a louder scratching sound, which is a bit shorter, it sounds like if you were to scate around on the ice and would turn, if you understand what I am saying. Also, I don't
know what the other sounds are.Is there maybe a game mode where the actions can be tried out, just like a training mode maybe?

When you have the NHL 2004 active, press insert+f2 and go to settings center. Go to web/html, then images/graphics. Change the include images so they include all of them and press ok. When both teams are selected, choose your team by either moving right or left with your analog stick, left is the away team and right is the home team. Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Okay, here's another demo. Listen with headphones, and you should know on what side the puck is now because I changed the settings in the sounds menu. I also demonstrated that to select a team, you have to left click on either the left or the right team that is already set, depending if you want to change the away or home team. After left clicking, the team list appears, along with two graphic arrows. One of them is to scroll the list upwards, the other one is to go down. The arrows are always next to the first and the last team on the list, and to scroll either up or down you have to left click them. That's pretty easy to understand once you get the hang of it. The arrow going down was next to toronto. Hope this helps, it's hard for me to explain because I have no way to record voice and gameplay at the same time.

I won the game 3-1, here's the extracted report.PITTSBURGH    3SAN JOSE    11st period00:3

If you run the game with newer IE versions, the jaws cursor for some reasons can't seem to read all the menus, plus there are blank spaces everywhere, no idea why.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

I will most likely check out the game very soon, though something already struck me in the meantime. If the game interface is HTML, and you have access to the files, then it would not be very hard to implement basic aria support. Even something as old as IE 8 has support for the basic rols like buttons, checkboxes and lists which would eliminate a lot of the mouse emulation. Perhaps this should be something to ask the mod authors for help with as this should be very possible without changing how the interface looks visually. On that note, what happens if you run the game with a newer version of internet explorer?

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Hmmm yes I know what you did wrong. I should've waited before posting that topic because I did not create a guide with all the details. First uninstall everything. When you reinstall the game, make sure you install it in c:\nhl 2004 and not in c:\program files\nhl 2004. You need the nhl 2004 folder directly in the c drive. Download the interface file, should be the first file on the list. Then, press the application key on the file which simulates a right mouse click, and go to properties. Press tab till you get to the unblock button and press space, then press okay. Copy the interface .exe file in your nhl 2004 main folder and press enter, follow the instructions to extract the files and say yes to overwrite all the items.

Hi.Also, I forgot to mension two more things.1. Sometimes, in the game, an error dialogue comes up saying that there is a wrong url or something like that and I get the question if I want to continue running scripts on that site.2. Another thing is when I browse through the play now menu with the errow keys, I often hear a clicking sound, like a sound you get when you are moving through a menu of selectable items, sometimes though I get a clicking sound, sort of a dubble click, like I reached the end of a list for example.I can't get rid of the feeling that I did something majorly wrong while installing the game. For example these two things, the not working game launcher, no real way to start a game and some more things that confuse me at the moment.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

As I have previously mentionned, it's going to take some time for you to learn the menus and stuff. Yes they are accessible, but you have to understand that the game was created for sighted users and you'll have to be patient. I think I'm going to have to post another demo showing more of the menus, and I'll do that whenever possible. Those letters you are encountering "c, lw,, rd, etc" are not graphics, they are actually positions of players, ld=left defense, rw=right winger, etc. and can not be clicked. I suggest you to install everything the mod offers before playing the game, if not you will experience some crashes. I will do my best posting another demo soon.

Hi.With all due respect, I have enough of this game for now, and I will tell you why. It's not that I don't like the game or that I want to stop learing it, but I am so freaking frustrated right now. I downloaded the interface change just now, I want to get the rosters tomorrow.I launched the game via the nhl.exe icon and got back to the main menu, with all the new options. I clicked on the play now button and here the problems began.I couldn't change the leagues I wanted to have, that thing with the graphic to see the teams didn't work, cause there are so many graphics, I actualy don't know what to press. And I still haven't managed to start a game till now. There are for example graphics like ld, rb, and these two letter combinations, which are doing nothing if you click on them.I found out the basic keyboard layout somehow, please don't ask me how I did that.As you might understand or not, I am quite fru
strated and stopped tinkering around with this game for now.Do you have any Ideas? I am seriously lost right now, and I haven't even played a game till now.

Hi.Well, regarding the keyboard or joystick configuration, I guess gamefaqs has the infos I need.I still have an xBox for PC controller flying around my desk, so why not use it to play this game?I am really curious about the mod for the game, is this just an one time project, or will there be updates to the roster for every season?

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Hi.Well, my interest for the sport was peaked some months ago when I picked up a game from the detroit red wings. Since then, I read up a bit about hockey, got myself aquainted with the terminology of the sport and also listened to some games over at my place, especially games by the Isalohn Roosters. So, I am still getting in to the sport, but I am quite interested in the game and would like to learn how to play it.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

The mod updates the interface, rosters, music, and other things are basically faces and jerseys, visual stuff. About the team selection screen, if you go to play now and scroll down, you will hear two teams. Team on the left is the away team and the team on the right is the home team. Left click once on a team, and scroll down again till you hear a graphic announcement. That graphic is a little arrow making the team list scroll down. Press right till you are on that graphic, then left click a few times to scroll down. Make sure you do it as I instructed, if not the menu will disappear and you will have to left click on the team again. I know this might sound hard at first, but it's definitely doable and worth it if you're a hockey fan

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Hi.At Seb, thanks for all your answers. I am really sorry for asking so many question, but I am really curious about this game, even though I have the feeling that I am getting on your nerves with my constant aasking xD.Does the mod actualy just change the player roster or are there more changes to it, I mean things like the menu layout or key controls.I am also wondering on how to start a game and what the problem with the team selection is, I am not sure if this is related to an IE or a jaws issue, maybe you have an idea on what the problem is.I listened to your little demo some time ago and I was pritty confused at first, cause for example the lines are different here in germany, we use a different field for the game and also we have some different coloured lines, so I have to read up on that too.Again, I'm really sorry for asking so many questions.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

I'll try to answer your questions the best I can. If you want to choose what music is being played with home or away teams, you simply drag and drop files in their corresponding folders. Keep in mind that you can't do this now because you only have the original game installed and not the mod. I play using a controller, but you can also play with a keyboard. It's not hard to setup the mod, you only have to extract the files and follow the instructions. I won lots and lots of games. I have a whole season in mp3 plus all the box score of all the games where I won the stanley cup at the end. It's definitely not a hard game, but you have to know the different strategies to the game to succeed. I will post a link to the mod later when I get more time.

Hi.Wel, apparently after trying to install Internet explorer 8 and getting the message that it can't be installed, I learned when I opened IE, and hit the about button, that I already had the version 8 installed, please don't ask me how that has happened.Ok, with that out of the problem, let's get to the in game problems.Which jaws version is the best one to play this game with? Cause I have some problems navigating the game.1. I can't find the shoot out practise which you had in your demo of the game.2. When I for example scrol down the teams in the play now mode, i can read some team names, but when I go down to far, I just get graphic labels only, for example, it goes.Anaheim, Boston, Buffalo, Calgary and then there are just graphic labels and no team names.3. Where can I start a game, I just see the back to main menu button in tthe menu with the teams and coach options.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

I hink tha that can be problem, because a latest version of windows has ie 11 installed as a default web browser.I think that installing oldest viersion of windows like windws xp or windows 7 should solve this problem. If you are using windows 7 the latest version of internet explorer will be always installed automatically because your windows update is turned on.Try to reinstall windows 7 after that turn off windows update and install ie 8 if it is not installed. You can install any windows on virtual machine if you want.I have a question.Does this game will need any mods or any files to make it accessible.I dont have a license for jaws, and I am not going to purchase any for only this game, because I am using nvda as my primary screenreader.Maybe it works with nvda's obiect navigation.I have a sad experience with installing jaws and I am afraid abit.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Hi.Sorry for that tripple post by now, but I solved the problem and got another one.I did manage to let the setup run in compatibility mode, but now I have the problem that IE 8 doesn't want to install, cause there is already the new IE 11 installed on my system.I tried to remove that from my hard drive via the programs and features option in the windows control panel, this helped at first glance.I restarted the setup and got the same message that there is already a new version of the internet explorer installed, I checked this by typing the iexplore command in the run dialog, and internet explorer started up.I amn wondering, is there any way to remove this program completely from my harddrive, or do I need to set up a virtual machine to install this program and play NHL 04 in the machine?

Hi.Well, urm, that sounds quite hard to me at first, but I guess when you are playing it it all makes sense, even though I had the peculiar feeling that I didn't hear the puck, but I am not sure on that.It would be cool if you could answer me some questions though.I still have to look at the menus a bit, cause I didn't get them really in your recording, which is not your fault, I just need to get more aquainted with the jaws cursor and the way it reads things out to the user.I am wondering, how do you for example change the music or the home and away team in this game? I guess this works with sliders, doesn't it?Also, are you plalying this game with a keyboard or controler? I ask cause I have no idea on which keys are required to play this game.Is it actualy hard to setup the NHL 2016 mod which I thought I heard somewhere in the menu, might also be misheard from me.And one last question, gosh, will this guy ever stop asking?
Did you actualy win a game before, I meen with that if new players also have a chance to play and maybe winn a game? So, that's it for now.I still need to downgrade to IE 8, so, I still have a bit of work to do.

Re: NHL 2004 accessibility

Okay, here's the demo. I played a game with me being the home team (Pittsburgh) against Montreal. It's pretty easy for me to know when I have the puck or not because I know the whole roster plus I've been playing this game for ages. However if you need help at first, when the home team has the puck in their opponent's zone, the crowd always gets excited. I lost 3 to 1, but I feel like I played pretty good, although I took a lot of penalties. Anyway here's the link:https://www.dropbox.com/s/vy5pu7lcaxec8 … 4.mp3?dl=0Also, here's the box score of the game which automatically gets saved after a game is completed. You will have to use the jaws cursor to navigate the game. Also, for accessibility you need to downgrade to IE 8, however that should not be an issue if you use ff or chrome as your main browser. I will post a demo showing the menus and playing a game tomorrow. The menus are fully accessible since the interface is in HTML.
