Good news! Microsoft have back-pedalled, just a teensy-weensy bit.If you click this here link, and only that link, then you can get back any storage above 5 GB that you would lose as a result of the changes if you are a free account holder of OneDrive. There will continue to be no "Unlimited" storage, and Office 365 users get 1 TB.Remember: the large print giveth, and the fine print taketh away again. Especially for free and in the cloud.

And for storage that's accessible where ever I go I just use flash drives. I have one that's barely bigger than a mechanical USB plug that holds 64 GB. I find it very unlikely I'll ever need more storage than that for files I need with me all the time.

Re: OneDrive Users: Changes for the Worse

Flash drives are definitely the best for portability, as well as wireless hard drives for portability as well as extreme-capacity, but the trade-off with those is that they do need to be charged. However depending on which one you get, with any luck the wireless hard drive may charge through standard mini usb in which case you could get an extremely short 3inch OTG usb cable and a n external battery to expand the life of that drive.

Re: OneDrive Users: Changes for the Worse

Hahaha the problem I have with Flash Drives is that I lose them. I had a collection of small stories and scenes I'd written through out last year in high school on a flash drive, can't find it now. So I generally use dropbox for most of my storage needs, it does the trick well, but that's entirely my preference.

Jack;Your experience is different from mine, my Seagate Free Agent USB drives don't need to be charged, as far as I can tell, they are low power 2.5 inch hard drive so the USB port can provide all the power they need.Steve;LOL! I hate to laugh at the unfortunate problem of loosing flash drives, but the way you put it, I couldn't help it. I've been fortunate, knock on wood, but so far, I have never physically lost a flash drive. I have however had one go bad on me, taking with it everything that was stored on it. Fortunately I had a backup of the drive so I didn't lose anything, but it was damned inconvenient.

@GeneWarner: No, not usb drives. Those are already bus-powered. I'm talking wireless hard drives like seagate wireless plus. Flash drives are good, but there are no 1tb flash drives, so wireless hard drives are a good option for those who wanna keep the portability without cables, and keep extreme capacity.

And even if! you want remote access, there are some cloud infrastructures that you can buy and set up yourself for reasonable pricing compared to paying money to a company that, eventually kicks the ghost on an infinite plan. Personal cloud isn't infinite, yes, it's true. Yes, you're paying a lot more up front for a personal cloud infrostructure, but hey it's better than paying for some company, so you know you're truly getting what you pay for. Even for actual space-limited subscriptions, while they are a little less vulnerable, they too have their downsides. There are some nice cloud infrastructures out there, one of them, don't know what it's called, but it's a 4tb cloud infrostructure for around $200. Ok, it's called the wd my cloud, 4tb, 2tb or 6tb. Or, as Genewarner pointed out, you can always just get multiple external hard drives. In fact it should be a standard practice to get multiple drives as you don't want to be on the
receiving end of hard drive corruption. You could even get a regular drive or two plus the cloud infrastructure.

Why not? They're not subscritpion based, in eed you could buy yourself your own cloud drive structure and set it up yourself for pretty cheep in the long run.

Advertising is so screwed up these days. Don't they realize that some people who truly take advantage of the unlimited plans are server hosts/managers? *sigh*

Re: OneDrive Users: Changes for the Worse

Yeah well, watch how it'll work out, or in this case, won't work out for them, unless they can get under the general consumer's guard again with some other catchy gimmick.  I suppose that, however, much like many of the greater companies who have brought out plans that sounded good and slapped their audiences in the face or pulled the rug out from under their feet at the very last minute, such as AT, Verizon, and whoever else was responsible for bringing about the idea of unlimited data for smartphone users for a certain price only to find it was not sustainable, they dont' necessarily have to feel the pain.  I find it kind of hard to feel sorry for a huge company when it spends it's time trashing people who, for whatever odd reason, won't read fine print.  It's easy enough when you have the money to do it, to assemble a legal team of sorts to put together a lengthy terms of service and word it in such a way that even if you
do read it entirely you might miss something, and people just, don't get the idea that when a company says unlimited they mean virtually unlimited, or unlimited until we find it hard to pay the bill.  One could argue that nothing in this world is free, and that is true.  So the question becomes, why offer it as such? Regardless what you think of apple's new music service, I think they had the right idea when they basically said, three months of free service, come and get it while it's good.  This is the difference between shouting out that you have free burgers and showing up with only 20 though the public doesn't know about it, and shouting out that you have free burgers while supplies last.  I'd have trouble not calling the former a greedy practice.

@gellman: I don't disagree that you should get what you pay for, but I do think greed is playing a big part here. If you signed up for the explicit and sole purpose of consuming space without regard for the bandwidth and storage requirements you are imposing, and you don't know to do otherwise, then I think you're part of the problem. It's like mobile data plans. When they are "Unlimited", you are excused for believing that you can use all the data you need, but not for replacing your home broadband connection with mobile connectivity, tethering all your devices to it, and then using all the data you can possibly use. Again, you know full well that bandwidth is constrained, and unless you are following whatever rules are most likely to constrain your use (not tethering, for example) then you're clearly consuming a resource at the expense of other customers.OneDrive had no business selling "Unlimited" storage, and anybody gr
eedy and/or stupid enough to hurl vast quantities of data up into the cloud without regard for others got a well-deserved kick, IMO.But I'll give you that those who didn't know didn't deserve it. I hope the PR disaster coming Redmond's way hurts them, too.

I'm sorry but I have no sympathy for anyone silly enough to buy into claims of unlimited anything, be it space or bandwidth or usage. The bottom line is that there is no such thing as a free lunch, and if you think about it, unlimited anything, even if paid for, is just another claim of a free lunch.I see all such claims as attempts to increase their customer base by snagging the many peeps out there so focused on getting something for nothing that they fail to see when they are being conned. All such claims or promises of unlimited something are destined to end at some point. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone when they do end.Forget trying to get something for nothing and shop with the expectation of paying for what you want. You'll probably find you're a lot happier that way because you won't be disapointed very often.

OneDrive Users: Changes for the Worse

Microsoft is lowering available storage for OneDrive users and increasing prices. Using the time-tested excuse of blaming abusers of "Unlimited" service, they are setting the ceiling for Office 365 subscribers to 1 TB, dropping the photos bonus, and setting the free tier at a mere 5 GB irrespective of your constancy to the service. Their prices are now outdone by iCloud. This is, of course, yet another delightful illustration of the falsity of the "Unlimited" marketing label. Also of the greed and stupidity of those who signed up with the intention of exploiting that, and many of whom are now outraged to discover that it's unsustainable. When will they learn? When will we ever get truth in advertising, and simply have storage plans that make sense, are economical, and aren't "Unlimited"?Watch out, OneDrive users.
