Re: Playing games like Palace Punch-up and Top Speed over the internet

Ok Chris, here's the deal. in my experience, virtual machines don't work well with those kinds of things. Like, not at all. So my suggestion would be, just don't use a vm for that because the bridge adapters in VM wear are just horrible, and they once screwed up my whole adapter driver so badly that a system restore was needed to get it working again. I used to think it was a great idea to host games on my network directly, but then realized that it was a huge security risk. You are essentially removing the protection of your router and your firewall and opening yourself up for big trouble. This is why even if you are able to forward ports and have people connect directly, I seriously just wouldn't. I personally use hamachi for direct connect games such as the ones mentioned here, and they all work wonders. To answer a common question about hamachi that has come up a bunch here, most of the management you will do will be done on your log me in account on the we
bsite. From there you can add or remove clients, create installation links for people each with their own expiration dates, networks the user is added to upon installation, labels and usage limits, manage your networks, change individual client rights to a network or change them all at once, change your subscription, and a ton more. You can do a few things with the interface, but not much. It really is a cool system though. This is getting a little out of the scope of general game discussion, so I think any further questions about networking should be taken to the off topic room. i am glad to help though.

Re: Playing games like Palace Punch-up and Top Speed over the internet

Hello. Thanks to Livrobo, it appears that I can host a few online games if I dont use Vmware. Unfortunately, I only have Wine to work with if I cant use virtual machines. When I try to run the RTR server program in Wine, the application crashes and Im returned to the FInder. What components does the RTR server need to run in Wine? Also, what port does Laser Breakout use? I cant play this over the internet unless I know what port to open.

Re: Playing games like Palace Punch-up and Top Speed over the internet

Sorry for bringing this topic back, but I just gave hosting internet games another try. I tried creating an RTR server but it wouldnt connect. I set a static IP on XP of 192.168.2.100 and tried to open the port in the port forwarding section of the Belkin router. I entered 6667 in both the incoming and private port boxes and my IP from my virtual machine. I have vmware set to use the bridged network adapter. WHen I run the server program and try to connect with my public IP, it says connection error. Is this router really not meant for this? Can an Airport Express handle DHCP reservations? I dont feel like paying $199 for an Extreme. Besides, I cant switch routers right now as Im still living with my parents until Im done with High School. I wonder if this is just a lost cause? ANd to think I thought it would actually work. Ive been having this issue for 5 and a half years.

Re: Playing games like Palace Punch-up and Top Speed over the internet

Youre right. Im afraid it appears that your router does not have DHCP reservation. Without wishing to seem unreasonable, that router isnt fit for purpose. You might, in the meantime, settle for statically assigning that machine an address toward the top end of your DHCP range, in the hope that it will not be assigned to some other device by the DHCP server, and then set up a port mapping. But my recommendation is just to buy an AirPort Extreme, if your connection will allow it. If it doesnt, try putting your modem or this router in bridge mode, and then either hooking your machine directly up to the IPv4 Internet like that or using an AirPort Extreme to provide the NAT and DHCP.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=155711#p155711

I think it should be possible to configure networks, once theyre linked to an account. I dont actually tried it yet, cuz I only have 2 networks: One network is running on my home-PC, and the other is running on my laptop. It should be possible to link multiple clients with your network, but I never tried it yet.About Bop it Ultimate, Tic Tac Toe, Acefire, and all the other games listed recently which dont seem to work with Hamachi:I didnt however tried connecting with one of these games, after all I dont have the Tic Tac Toe game...If any of those games would have been running on a server, I would have said it has been abandoned, which would make sense because Acefire has been abandoned, as well as all the PB-Games, and lighttechinteractive is, as far as I know, in a rather strange status, however they havent posted any news since December 2007.But I dont think it doesnt work because of that...However m
ake sure no anti-virus software or firewall blocks them. Check whether your firewall is active or not. Maybe it has somehow switched back to active.I know its not the best clue, but thats the only lead I can give you at this time. Re: Playing games like Palace Punch-up and Top Speed over the internet

The interesting thing about Hamachi, in my opinion, is the really fun thing it does with IPs. Im not sure if it still does this, but it used to employ the 5.*.*.* IP range, simply because nothing else was using it. With the IPV4 space running out, though, I think theyve begun distributing the 5.*.*.* IP space out to people. How this affects Hamachi, if at all, I have no clue. Glad this thing still works though.Real quick, Chris, you might want to compare your Virtual Machines IP address with the IP address of your Mac. See if they differ. If they do, try giving people the Mac IP, or the VM IP, and see what happens.Im not sure if this matters, but in your router settings you should also turn on UPNP. And while youre in there, ensure port forwarding is enabled for every single port to your computer. Thats probably way overkill, but maybe whats messing things up is the games are connecting through different ports and confusing t
he crap out of your router.Cheers.ScottURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=155233#p155233

Re: Playing games like Palace Punch-up and Top Speed over the internet

Hi Chris,In order to play Top Speed, DragonPong, and all the other games where you actually need to forward some ports, you should get yourself Hamachi. Its a tool to connect multiple computers to a network, so you dont need to forward any ports. Make sure windows firewall is turned off, and this solution should work greatfully! I wasnt able to play DragonPong without Hamachi. I finally got it and created a network and let people join it. I couldnt play it anyway, cuz my firewall was still running in the background, which is, of course, not bad at all, but the firewall usually blocks things like Hamachi so not all the features available to you wont work properly. However, make sure you turn it back on. My firewall was been inactive for a while, and tuns of nasty viruses were lying around on my computer, which caused se
veral, interesting things. However, it was annoying if my task mannager, as well as the reg editor has been blocked and my computer suddenly restarted. You however need some programming experiences in batch-files. I got a message that my computers gonna shut down in five minutes and I just typed in shutdown -a and easily deleted them all!Okay, that was a little bit off-topic, but its good to know some of these details in general. Hi.I havent tried Hamachi and Im not totally sure about what it is.Chris I think youre doing it all correct. The only two things I can think of is the following:1: Some inaccessible things in your router which dont give the message about any mistakes on opening the right ports. Trust me, that has happened for me on my D Link routers.2: A weird issue on virtual machines which makes opening poerts nearly impossible. Whats still blockifng the connection? This is really pissing me off, I mean really. Is it stupid clear internet service which is terrible anyway?Sorry if Im not making sense, Im just really angry right now and really want this to work. Can someone please help? please before I go insane?please?UR
