Re: Some drum covers I've done

Racks are universal.  Do you have any form of contact outside the site?  PM me your contact info and I can help you if needed. The MDS-9 is a good solid rack.  I have one to house my A2E conversion and 6 cymbals, the module, and cables are anchored to the poles. The rack, and most of them, consist of 4 upright poles for legs, and 4 crossbar poles.  The back where you sit is open, and the front crossbar section has two poles for stability, and each side has one,   I think they are all the same width and they all have a curve to them. Picture from overhead view lik,e a 3 sided square with curved sides.  Of course the  sides can be spread out  as desired.  Just make sure you have everything you need on the rack, which most racks, factory, comes with  2 cymbal arms in the front poles, 2 L rods on the front crosbar, an L rod on the right crossbar, a adjustable L rod on the left cross bar, an empty clamp for the module,
and on the left front leg will be an extended short pole with a ball joint L rod for mounting your snare.   Don't be alarmed if they are not all there, for they are all cheap.  I have a few spares floating around if you need some, depending on where you live, haha.  I always keep spares just incase.  The crossbars on the front might be larger though come to think of it, sinde it has a slightly wider spread.  But it should be assembled when you buy it new, if not I will help you.Noise? Well, the kick pad will definitely be your loudest pad since it will   have the most fibration.  IT's ot the striking of the pad but the vibrations you will have to worry the most about.  The physical noise is not that loud, you can barely hear the drumming outside the door of the room the kit's in.  Mesh pads are even quieter than that.  IF you're on a 2nd story apartment, you may want to invest in a flor mat that c
an absorb vibration.    The kick tower may be the loudest of all the drums though, since it's going to have the hardest impact.  an alternative is finding a used GUitar Hero World TOur kick pedal, and changing the tip on it to accept a auarter inch jack, it works just as well and less noisy, but not the same feel.

Re: Some drum covers I've done

Thanks for the info. At the moment I'm thinking about assembling a kit bit by bit, so first I'm looking at racks. But I'm not sure how universal the clamps/mounts are that come with the different types. For instance the Roland mds-9v. It says it is for use with the td-15, but do you know if I would be able to clamp any pads/cymbals to this rack using the supplied clamps? My other initial concern is how noisy are these things? I know I can have the actual sounds on headphones, but what about the hitting of the pads, especially the beater against the kick pad. I live in an apartment, and wouldn't want the neighbours thinking what the hell's that arrhythmic thudding sound that's been going on for hours every effing day hahaha.

Re: Some drum covers I've done

I will give you descriptions of the pads I mentioned so you can understand them.A Roland PD8 pad is afull rubber pad, it's about 9 inches in diameter and has about a 8 inch pad surface with a 1/2 inch rim that goes around the drum.  It is very thin, maybe about 3 inches thick at most, maybe less, and has a trigger jack underneith it and has a mounting  assembly    attached to it with a hole to stick an L rod through.    It kinda looks like a pendilin with a very stubby shaft, which is what the mounting bracket is, that only extends out maybe 3 inches from the pad.  The PD-9 is the same, but a larger pad.The CY-8 has the shape of a traditional cymbal but is only 12 inches in diameter, and has a rubber pad covering about 2/5 of the cymbal, which houses the edge strip electronics.   Under the cymbal where the mounting hole is, has a metal framework with a cutout  to mount onto a cymbal stand using a Roland Rotation
stopper.  Also underneith the cymbal has a place where the cable connects to, and a piece of rubber that has a metal housing around it that protects the sensor on the underside of the cymbal.    There are no exposed electronics on anything.   Everything connects with 1/4 inch TRS cables.  The Roland TD-4 uses a harness that has all the cables attached to it already and just has raw tails on the other end to plug into your  pads.ALl Roland cymbals above the CY-8 are about the same but size differently ranging from 12 to 18 inches.    The Roland CY-5 looks more like a CY-8 but is only 10 inches, however, they trigger better, haha.  All roland PD series pads are the same physical shape, but the name makes the difference in how it's designed, everything from 6 inch to 12 inch mesh pads pads can be found.  Only the PD8 and PD9 are Roland's only rubber pads.A rack houses everything, you don't need addition
al stands, unless you use a Roland VH-11 or want to mount a ROland PD-120/125 or something similar on a snare stand.

Re: Some drum covers I've done

Feel free to ask me anything.  Not sure if you could see my video visually or not, but my kit is a DIY tama rockstar acoustic kit that was converted to electronic giving me a full acoustic sized kit to play with.    My first setup was a Roland TD-3  drum kit  which had mediocre sounds at best, onboard, but I used it to trigger Superior Drummer 2.The setup was a TD3 module, 2 Roland PD8 rubber pads for rack toms, a Roland PD9 pad for floor tom, and another for snare, a PD8 for a hihat stand, a rock band pedal for a hat controller, and 3 CY8 cymbals for my cymbals, two crashes and a ride.  Kick pad was a Yamaha KP65, since they're so cheap.  It was all mounted on a MDS3 drum rack.  Everything was used except the kick tower, held on for over a year before I moved to DIY conversions.  The whole setup didn't even cost me  but maybe 700 bucks USD.Best solution is start with a basic setup and work your
way  up.  For you, probably a snare, kick, hat, crash, ride, and two toms.  Right now, you can get a nice used Roland TD-4 for under 200 bucks..  Most common pads are Roland PD-8 rubber pads.  they are universal and very cheap.  You can find them for about 40 bucks used with cable and mount if ou look  enough..  Matching rack for the TD-4 module, new can be about 150 bucks, and that comes with all mounts and everything.  If you have any questions or are looking for specific information, then feel free to ask me anything else.  Just thought this would let you see what's out there and can help.  .

Re: Some drum covers I've done

Hey, that's really cool. You play great. I'm definitely interested in getting started with e-drums. I don't expect to become a good drummer, but hopefully over a five year period or so, I might become competent enough to create decent basic drum tracks. And just trying to learn to play drums on a kit rather than a keyboard has to be generally beneficial whatever happens. Hope you won't mind if I ask you some questions when I finally take the plunge. I find it all a bit daunting with all the stuff you need. Not being able to see any pictures makes it even more difficult. I'm not sure what I need in terms of rack, mounts, stands, cables, pedals, etc. It makes my head spin just thinking of everything I'll need to get started. It seems  such a complicated set up for a mucical instrument.
