Re: Installing Ubuntu Mate not possible in VM?

hi,the accessibility profile is not being loaded, this is why you get the in accessible install screen.you need to launch a terminalcontrol plus alt plus ttypepkill -9 ubiquity.that will kill the installer process and boot you in to the full live session.wate a few seconds give it around 10 seconds, press alt plus f2 type orca --replace to launch orca.you then need to enable assistive technology from the preferences menu after you have done that, you need to log out then back in to the live session.go to the desktopthere should be a install ubuntu-mate item, press enter on that, and the installer should be accessible again.I don't have a ubuntu iso on me currently but last time I tryed these stepps worked for me.please would you tell me if it works or not?Majid

Re: help with setting up a Ubuntu VM on windows

I never got that error. Did you try running the thing as admin? I am always admin on my comp in a way, maybe it couldn't write to the program files directory?and about how to get speakup, I'm really not sure why you'd still do that, but there is an arch linux distro called tarch(talking arch) that comes with it. However, as it's an arch distro, it drops you in the live environment, good luck trying to install it from there and only with the command line! Yeah, there are install arch guides on the internet, but still...a bit of a daunting task if you ask me.regarding dark days ahead, I don't think it not working with orca is the case anymore, though I might be wrong on that, didn't research in some time.Btw, the extension pac for virtual box is to enable external devices to be shared among the host and guest, not for the kind of file sharing you're thinking of, with shared folders and stuff. The guest additions, however, are kernel drivers that make it possible to do many things, from clipboard sharing, to shared folders, autoscaling displays, etc. To install that, you need to mount the VBOX guest additions iso file, then run the install.sh or run.sh or whatever they are calling  it now. Alternatively, ubuntu can and sometimes will prompt you that the cd unit has an autorun file and if you wish the program to run, in this case, the shell script that installs the kernel modules. Do that, give the password when prompted, restart when needed, and you're good to go!

Re: how to install ubuntu server on vmware

You can't just run the ISO file and expect every thing to be saved...Instead of telling you what you should and shouldn't do, i will try and help you to give you instructions to install it the right way, how ever if it does not fully work, you can google it.You first of all need to create a VM. then add the OS later option, then set the ram size and storage size and click on done. Don't start the virtual machine yet, you then right-click, go to settings, and add the ISO file to the drive and click done. Then boot the machine up and turn orca on.Format the drive and let ubuntu creat the partitions automaticly for you. Then click on install, and you're good to go.Sorry i can't remember all the options at the top of my head, but those are more or less the steps to follow.

Re: how to install ubuntu server on vmware

Yeah, you did this via the VMWare autoinstall thing.  I still really suggest throwing it out and doing it via Ubuntu Desktop for Orca etc. though, and also doing it manually.  I know you can get orca by installing a bunch of stuff through apt instead, but I don't know what.  The version of the installer that comes with Desktop is accessible. You need a screen reader in the vm to edit config files, both for when things go wrong and potentially for initial setup.  I don't understand why I have to point out that trying to read highly technical information that needs to be accurate character for character through OCR isn't ever going to work, but apparently I have to.I always forget how to check/edit hostname on Linux without just Googling it, but if you can work out the hostname of the vm, then Windows may already be able to see it if you ssh myuser@hostname.  I have that working here, but I don't remember if I did anything special to set it up.  Windows 10 implemented mdns which I think is what does it.Now, the next thing is VMWare networking configuration.  You want to just leave that as NAT.  If it's not working and you think it should, then open an admin command prompt on the Windows side and do:net stop vmnetbridge
net start vmnetbridgeWhich can sometimes magically fix it.  Yet another reason to have Orca on the vm is so that you can find out whether the mvm can reach the internet, because "the vm can reach the internet but Windows can't talk to it" and "the vm can't reach the internet" are very different problems with very different solutions. If that's not good enough to get you access, you can put VMWare in whatever they call their network configuration that gives the VM a MAC address and direct access to your router (bridged, I think).  Then you can go play with dhcp settings in the router and get it a fixed IP.  There's a couple other ways to do that as well, but I don't remember them.  Be aware that screwing up the router's dhcp settings will take the entire network offline.  You'll have to reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure from scratch.  There's ways to fix it that don't require doing that, but they're probably beyond you and they're potentially router specific.  "I screwed up my DHCP settings" is beyond my level of networking troubleshooting knowledge. If all of this is confusing, you can go get Docker for Windows and read a Docker tutorial and every single step of the process will be 100% accessible.  Only real difficulty with Docker is that content gets erased when the container stops by default, which most people just fix by embedding their content in the container at least at the newbie level.  If you can write a bash script to do what you want, docker will work nicely for you as a learning platform and it also looks very good on a resume anyway.

Re: how to install ubuntu server on vmware

OK, all of the posts in this thread minus Camlorn's posts are bullshit.First, the installer is some sort of graphics thing, but it is not using a window manager in the traditional sense. It's using either ncurses or some other library. It's not accessible for us to install it that way.Second, VmWare has this feature called EasyInstall, and I hate it. It does what has been described in one of the posts, where the OS installs the first time you start the VM with no intervention from the user. Getting around this means you have to disable one extra CD drive and one floppy drive in the hardware settings for the VM in question before you power it on for the first time.Let's see, what other rubbish have I encountered while skimming through here. Oh yeah, the bit about Ubuntu 16 not having an installer. yep, welcome to the future, where OS's magically install themselves and start themselves almost instantly. Just umm... don't pull out that flash drive... trust us.@rings2006 You have this habit of answering questions when you have a half-assed idea of what's going on, which really doesn't help things. It just means there's liable to be more confusion. It's really not the way to be.

If you aren't running an installer you're running a live cd and restarting the vm will probably erase all the stuff.  If you did get it working to not erase all the stuff by formatting the hard disk or something, it'll kind of work until it breaks.  So don't do that.

Re: how to install ubuntu server on vmware

You should install Ubuntu Desktop instead.  There's nothing Ubuntu Server has that Ubuntu Desktop doesn't, and you want Orca for when things go wrong enough that you can't SSH it.You can turn Ubuntu Server into Ubuntu Desktop by just installing a bunch of packages, as far as I know.  Might as well do it the accessible way.  In practice if you're using Ubuntu Server for something it'll be through Docker or something like that that's accessible without issue, and you probably won't even ever run the installer yourself.

Re: help with setting up a Ubuntu VM on windows

@7 thanks for the help. I’ve just managed to set up the VM on virtual box, enabled Orca, and it’s so far running smoothly. Shaim about not being able to get speak up anymore though. The only reason I wanted to use it over Orca was cause I read that some people had some problems when running CDDA with Orca, as opposed to speak up, though I’m not sure if this is still true, or if there are any settings I can adjust to make the experience any better. I’m going to try and install CDDA now and get it to run, hopefully I can figure this out.

Re: help with setting up a Ubuntu VM on windows

nope, you can't install speakup on a distro that doesn't come with it, period. This is because speakup uses a kernel driver to synthesize speech from the earlyest time possible, almost at boot time, when the drivers are loaded. In linux, in order to compile new kernel drivers, you have to include them in the source code of the kernel or something of sorts, I am not really an expert in linux kernel development, and don't really want to be tbh. And why use such a thing as accessible_coconut? It's fucking obsolete, plus we have orca already included in the official ubuntu distros, so gods above, why?anyway, about the keys not responding, what happens if you press the right ctrl key while in the virtualbox machine window? Does it release the keyboard capture then?if you don't have a right controll key, then post here and tell me, since I changed mine to right shift in the vbox settings, under keyboard shortcuts, but it's terribly inaccessible if you don't want to fiddle with it for hours on end. Alternatively, you can use sharp_keys to map keys that you don't phisically have on your keyboard to some that you need in order to operate some apps/services/functionality. For example, the right ctrl key for vbox, or, in my case, the other backslash key  to the applications/context menu  key.

Re: help with setting up a Ubuntu VM on windows

This may be a rudimentary question, but in all my time looking online to try and figure out how one would go about installing a program on a Linux VM, I just can’t get how you’d do it. I’m trying to set up Cataclysm dark days ahead, and speak up. When it comes to installing speak up, I read that you have to install it via the terminal in Linux, but how is beyond me. As for Cataclysm dark days ahead, I downloaded the tar gz archive from the sight, and now its in my computer’s downloads, and I am lost as to how you would go about installing it onto a VM. Also, when ever I run the virtual machine, it seams like none of the key presses are responding, cause when I tried pressing control alt T to open the terminal, nothing happened as far as I could tell. Am I just over looking a rather obvious step, cause I’m legitimately bewildered.

Re: help with setting up a Ubuntu VM on windows

sorry to bring this up, but I use virtualbox on an everyday bases, you have to adapt what you find online. So, if the machine doesn't have a disk/iso attached at startup, indeed an inaccessible window will appear, I think it's called the media manager tool? not sure on that one, but it's not important how it's called anyway.so, once you created the machine, you're focused upon it, so don't move your focuse away by arrow keys, because that part will seemn inaccessible to you at this point...well, frankly, it kind of is, unless you know some tips I don't want to share here for fear of making an overly long post.so, with the freshly creatted machine focused, go to the menu bar, go to the right untill you hear machine. It should be the second after file. Then, go down approximately 3 options till you hear settings...At this point, once you enter on it, a new window will appear. Go down to storage and press tab untill you hear something like split buttonLists all storage controllers for this machine and the virtual images and host drives attached to them.Go down in that menu untill you reach a controller called something like empty storage controller. NVDA will only say empty. Then, shift+tab untill you hear something like thisOptical Drive: Alt+D  drop down button  subMenu  Choose a virtual optical disk or a physical drive to use with the virtual drive. The virtual machine will see a disk inserted into the drive with the data in the file or on the disk in the physical drive as its contents. Now, press that button. It will reveal a menu with all recently used iso files or disk drives. Go all the way down to Choose a disk file...select your file from the standard open file dialog displayed, then go click OK.Now, you can start the vm as you did before, and it'll come up with the ubuntu install screen eventually. You can know it's there once you hear a sound, you'll know when it happens. Then, wait 30 or so seconds so you're sure the screen displayed completely, then press win+alt+s to start orca. Then, go through the install as usual. You can follow sighted tutorials or whatever at this point, only with orca installed.Success! You did it!

help with setting up a Ubuntu VM on windows

Hi people, for the last few hours I’ve been trying to get Cataclysm Dark days ahead to run on my windows laptop, via rigging up a Linix VM, but I’ve run into a few problems when installing the VM. I’m trying to use Ubuntu, running off virtual box. I’ve set up the virtual machine, and now the instructions that I’m following say that I need to double click on the name of the machine, click a folder shaped icon, and assign the Ubuntu ISO file. However, when I click on my machine’s name, NVDA stops talking, and all key presses are unresponsive, the only way I can get out of the window then is buy closing it via the task manager. Figuring that its just a case where NVDA can’t read what’s in the window, I asked a sited friend if they could help me out. The only problem is that, according  to them, there is no folder shaped icon. So I’m in the dark as to what I need to do. If somebody who’s experienced in how to set up VMs could point me in the right direction, that’d be extremely helpful.

Re: Can i run ubuntu mate on a rassberry pi?

@Turretif you're in a VM, get a cheap USB audio interface for $10 off Amazon, any will do, then tell your VM software to connect it to the guest.  This is how I'm doing Synthizer for anything nontrivial, and it gets the latency down to basically zero.If you're not on a VM, I don't know the first thing about Accessible Coconut specifically, but there has always been a degree of "oops, you got poorly supported hardware" to the Linux desktop realm.  If you just took a random laptop and put Linux on it without planning, that may be your problem. But as for the Pi specifically, we might be at the point of it being able to run lag free Orca, I'm not sure, but last I checked they had 12 bit audio interfaces, so unless that's changed you'd at least need an external adapter or something.

The raspberry pi 4 comes in 2, 4, and 8 gb ram variants. As I understand it that is indeed for the board only, power supply, keyboard, mouse, cables, and monitor not included. Plain SD card are more or less like blank harddrives, you'd need to install your operating system of choice. I can tell you that Raspbian does comes with a variety of installed software, such as Python, chrome, and various other tools. There are guides around for enabling ssh and wifi when burning the SD card, if your interested.

I'm running coconut on my HP right now, 4 cores and 8 GB ram, and have actually had better performance than I did on ubuntu mate. And I should know, am using linux as my primary now.Btw, have you tested orca with the touch screen? I've heard very conflicting things about it's touch screen support, or lack there of.

Probably something to ask on their mailing list.Sorry for going slightly off topic, but as I've yet to invest in 1 of these myself, how exactly would the process of booting from the SD work? Do you just insert the SD card with the ISo burned and then connect a keyboard or what have you and do your thing? More over, do they come with anything installed by default? I've heard of raspian but. Also, Mario, you mentioned having to buy your own power supply, heat sinks and such. Do they use some kind of proprietary port or is it micro USB or whatever? Also, as far as heat sinks are concerned, how much of an issue is overheating etc? If I were to buy 1 of these, just how much would I have to get?

Re: How can I set my timezone accessibly on ubuntu mate?

Try this terminal command:sudo timedatectl set-timezone "your timezone of choice"To list all the available timezones, use:timedatectl list-timezonesHTH

How can I set my timezone accessibly on ubuntu mate?

Hey all,So I'm having yet another issue with this thing. If I go to preferences in the GUI and select timezone from there, I can see that it seems to be set to new york by default, but there's no list to select from or anything, just an edit box containing the current timezone, and changing that doesn't actually work, it just resets itself.Any ideas?

Re: Ubuntu Embraces Raspberry Pi Support

@6Ubuntu has images that support Raspberry Pi 2, 3, and 4, which you can find [here]. There have been previous guides on setting up Orca with the Mate desktop environment, there being guides [here] and [here] for the Raspi 3 and 4. Traditionally its been a bit of a workaround, as a separate audio dongle was required for separate environment output vs the shell.I'm not sure how well this works with current versions or how much this has improved, but I imagine it may not be much different for Ubuntu.
