Re: Urgent! major problem with Internet explorer From personal experience attempting to remove infections from client's machines, I agree with everyone else here, once you are infected, the only way to be sure that the infection has been removed, and stays that way, is to use a program like kill disk and sanitize the drive, then do a clean install of Windows. The problem is that these tools like malware bytes and stuff do work well, but they do best at preventative measures, they don't always do wonderful when you've been infected after the fact. I just don't think the system will ever be right until you format and reinstall. If any malware got deeper into your system, and Malwarebytes or any other antivirus, for that matter, isn't helping, you'll have to take the plunge as others on this topic have said and do a complete format. Yes, you can reset the OS, especially if you're running Windows 10, but to be extra safe, and if you've got backups, I'd format. That way you know for sure that you're starting out fresh. The operating system was called CP/M and was one of MS-DOS's ancestors. I installed it on a Sol 20 computer, it had an 8 bit Z80 CPU running at 1 MHz with 64K of memory. Re: Urgent! major problem with Internet explorer well unfortunately little after the horse has bolted in this case but I have my OS on one drive and everything else on another which makes it really easy to make a system image. I do this once a week. delete the old one, make a new one then if my system goes totally fubar I can do an image restore which takes about 15 minutes and totally wipes the system drive and replaces all the data exactly as it was when the backup was taken.well worth the time and buggering about. if you only have one drive to play with it's easy enough to partition it so you have a small partition for system drive and your d drive or what ever it'll be will have tons of space on. then set your documents, downloads etc to save to the secondary partition. works a treet.also, you didn't say if you tried malware bytes. that usually gets rid of pups and stuff like that. there is a toolbar remover as well that gets rid of addons for internet explorer but I can'r remember what it's called. i'll look and see if I still have a copy. And if you're going to be pirating, at least have the good sense to not use public trackers. Re: Urgent! major problem with Internet explorer C cleaner is also great for removing addons etc, I've indeed found it easier to use than Ie's own interface, especially for addons microsoft wants you to keep or ones which are hidden, not to removing stuff from your computer. Restore points are okay if the problem is a changee in settings or directions, but they don't actually delete anything or remove any programs etc, which is why I personlly started looking into antiviruses and tools like C cleaner and malware bites instead.Then again, I've not tried restore points on windows 10 since thankfully I've not needed them so it's entirely possible my info is out of date. For tech skills, I wouldn't try installing an os myself, especially if there was info I wanted to keep. Yes, i backup every which way since sunday and I'm used to configuring things as I like them, but it's too easy to arse things up during an install, especially given that accessibility of os installation is a bit iffy anyway. Re: Urgent! major problem with Internet explorer LOL have you guys heard of restore points? while I'm dealing with reinstallations over here, we need to remember that not everyone has the same ability, as some of us do. hell, I can reinstall windows 8, and most likely 7 as well. but anyway. mail.ru was actually installed into my chrome once. a factory reset of chrome did the job. try removing addons in your browser, clearing browser histories, factory resets, and what not. also, if on win10, look in the recently added in the start menu, it may just show you what was recently added, and that may be something to go by. my win10 had a yahoo power search, and it showed up in there, so it was easy to get rid of. on 8.1, though, it was a bit more of a guess work. You can't delete IE as it is self-replicating and will come back if you try. If you see any pages that have the name mail.ru and some russian characters then that's what is it. I had it a few times on ie and I had to remove IE completely. It tried to install itself on chrome too but luckily chrome didn't allow it due to their policy. It'd have been equally simple for whoever wrote your crack to include ransomware in it, and you'd be reinstalling windows from scratch (or buying a new computer).
