I thought the delight games version was more like one of their usual gamebook adventures which just happened to feature a treck across the west, rather than actually replicate the mix of random events and  management from the original dos game, though as I've not played that one I might be entirely wrong.

Re: accessible Oregon Trail?

The only version I know is westward which can be Played here, thanks to the same developer who maintains the awesome online gamebook adventure age of fable, though I possibly should look at the choice script one.I've actually never played the original Oregon trail, though I'm always hearing about it and would definitely be up for it if I got the chance, though unlike the above mentioned game westward, which is purely text based, I think the original also featured various real time minigames for activities such as hunting which would need audio versions.

Re: accessible Oregon Trail?

I'd love to be able to experience this, an origon trail with mini enhancements, such as sounds and an interface with perhaps two modes, a classic which is hard, and perhaps a modern mode with more modern scenarios, what I mean by this, is put the game in the same time period but add enhancements to it. More choices and such, but of course, the most important thing, would be that this game has the classic mode with interface and, perhaps, sounds. I've never had a chance to experience this classic.

Re: I Want an Accessible Oregon Trail Game

yeah westward is OK, its close to the Apple II version. The DOS version had a bit more control over things. Random events could still get you, but yeah. I don't like random things that just get you and that's it, some of that is OK if its offset with things you can control, either if you have something you need, like medicine if your people get sick.I like the concept of Paw prints, I have been getting into it a bit, but one thing I don't like is the set number of tasks you can do in one place before you move on. I'm not a fan of the religion system either, I just pick one and go, and well if it works out, it does, and if not, then I probably won't know anyway as stated in the readme. I also would have liked to be able to make things rather than having to find everything. Splints for example, that might be a combination of a bandage (found item) and a stick (item not in the game as far as I know). Paw Prints is far too random for my liking.Wh
at I would like is a modernization of the DOS Oregon trailwith audio version of the mini games, the only one I remember is the hunting, and vaguely. Either that or a game using the story from the DOS version, but made from scratch. Either way, I don't expect anyone to do this, It just would be nice.

yeah, Mississippi doesn't really sound like organ trails type of game. I remember playing it with my brother and sister, they are both sighted. I do wish there was an audio version of that game. Yes, westwards might be close to it, but it's browser based, lacks a certain element of the game. Well that's my opinion anyways.

Re: I Want an Accessible Oregon Trail Game

Lol Phil that sounds cool, and actually westward is rather like that with you buying supplies at the start of the game then having random events like ambushes and cold weather and such as you roll along with your wagons, though there I think the gunfights are based on numbers and whether you have hunting skill rather than whether you type fast. Mississippi however from what I remember wasn't like this since basically each turn you got the chance to buy or sell a number of products and all the random events reflected on basically whether you were able to buy or sell or not, not whether you made it along the trail. I even think there was something later in the game with you funding a political  to become president, though I neve rplayed that far sinse as I said the game didn't particularly appeal to me.

Re: I Want an Accessible Oregon Trail Game

Dark,I used to play Oregon Trail a lot on my Apple 2E.It was in basic and you could look at the source code and modify it.At the beginning, you had to purchase all your supplies for the trip including how many oxen and food and ammo and weapons. So I guess that part was like the Mississippi game.During your trip it was turn based and at each turn you got a random event, and reduction in your water and food supplies. At each event you had multiple choices on what to do.I like the gunfight choice. It had a timer and when you hit enter you needed to type in a random word in less than a second. The random words were, Pow, Bang, Boom, and crack. If you typed quickly, you hit the target, either a outlaw, or rattle snake or buffalo.

Re: I Want an Accessible Oregon Trail Game

Hmmm, Phil I didn't think Mississippi was as much an Oregon trail type of thing since it's basically an economic game. Then again I'll admit I was never taken with Mississippi myself. It seemed firstly that prices were fairly random and mostly what happened is I bought something and waited for the random number generator to let me make a prophet on it without chance to do much else. Then again, I got the strong idea Mississippi was intended as a multiplayer game and would likely have been much more fun that way, however since it had no capacity to play online and no computer opponents I never tried that. Indeed the multiplayer at same computer idea did seem a bit of a clunky mechanic to me and I rather wish thedevelopers had found a better way of presenting a multiplayer game.

Re: I Want an Accessible Oregon Trail Game

There used to be another game based on Oregon trail,Mississippi,I had it in my list of Windows games but its link is now dead. You can find it on the Internet Archive,http://web.archive.org/web/200912131847 … i/miss.phpMississippi is a blind-accessible game available in both the German and English language. It is a trade-simulation game that takes place in the Wild Westof 1770. In the game you learn that a distant uncle in America has died and that he has left you all of his money. In the game you have to use the moneyto gain more money, using a variety of?goods (for instance corn), of which the value may constantly change throughout the game. You earn money by?buyingcheap goods and selling?them for more money.?But you can?also get rich by trying your luck in a casino. Your goal is to become the most powerful tradesmanin the country. When you succeed you may even have the chance to become president of America! A demo version is available . It is restricted to only run 4 years (in the game that is, so you can only play untill 1774). There are a few other restrictions, like a limited casino.

Well Ironcross your in luck. here is Westward, an accessible browser based single player game based on oregon trail As a disclaimer, I've never actually played Oregon trail myself so don't know how similar this game, westward it's called, is to it. It is however single player, and very playable since it's browser based, and has you trying to get wagons across the old west so hay! I probably ought to give this a db entry actually, since while it is a fairly simple game as people do seem to remember Oregon trail fondly it's one people probably want to know about, and it is hosted by the same chap who writes the very good age of fable online game.

So yeah speaks for itself don't it, I want something like the old Oregon Trail games that In can play that has all the aspects of it. I played the one on the mess apple emulator and it sucks in comparison to the old DOS one, but since my vision is worse now than it used to be, even if I got DOSbox and tracked down the old DOS game, I couldn't read the screen. Question, would someone be willing to make this?If you'd like to see something like this, please thumbs up this post to indicate to potential developers that it's something worth their time and effort and that you'd enjoy it.
