Re: need help from someone who knows their way around computer issues

Hmmm you don't want to leave updates off all the time though. On the case of computers are not made the way there used to be, it depends on what you go for.A branded computer ie my toshiba is good but it can be restricting what is loaded. You need to buy a shop system and build from there.Buy in bits or near built. It should say barebones or upgradebox.a barebones has no disks an upgradebox has.Anyway buy your os and install it and any other devices like ssds.Next insert your cds from the manufacturer of the board into your unit.Depending on who the system is for at this point depends on what you load.1.  every driver, network wireless, display extra cards and devices usb2 and 3 ports and every driver on there. You don't need your network moniter program or extra utilities unless you want them and you don't need that advert full bit of software for dvds unless there are sighted people using it.
And you don't need extra stuff which is loaded with junkware though saying that if you register and it installs things and then offers you something at silly low prices that actually works then go for it.

I've noticed the exact same behavior with windows update, try turning updates off entirely and see if that resolves it. My svchost.exe was using about 1.25 gb of ram at one point before I turned updates off. Make sure to turn off updates, not just the update service.

Re: need help from someone who knows their way around computer issues

Heat could be a very good explanation for major lag. Most CPU's reduce the clock frequency to prevent the computer from overheating completely, which of course results in a massive drop of performance. I had a laptop that every half a year or so would need to get cleaned up, otherwise the heat would cause the processor to intermitendly slow to an almost near dead stop for a few seconds or so every few minutes, which made even the most basic audiogames almost unplayable. Get a program like coretemp or speed fan to see what temperatures you're reaching. If when the computer is not doing anything the CPU temp gets to 80 or 90 degrees Celcius, you definitely want it cleaned up.The hard drive could also be dying, which could cause bad performance. It also might have corrupted a system file which is now causing your problems, so that's another area I would check with a program like HDTune or disk checkup. SSvchost.exe is a system file responsible for running servic
es. Services include things like various helper software for drivers, audio, or even video intercepting for just about every comertial screen reader. It's normal to have multiple instances of it, which is also sadly why a lot of malware pretends to be that file. Killing the wrong one could cause a system crash. As I said before, files from a service could have been corrupted causing a freeze and memory leak, or it could be just as well some piece of malware.

Re: need help from someone who knows their way around computer issues

Because of the process you mentioned, try to think back to what you may have installed recently that would be using allot of network resources, a server, an external IP manager like Hamachi, ETC, and if you can't think of anything, try to find any processes that you know contact the internet that have just recently been updated, dropbox, BTSync, ETC, and make sure they are actually running and not hanging by watching there RAM usages go up and down for a few minutes. If you are running Windows 7, make sure that you have service pack 1, because early versions of Windows 7 had a big issue with Audiage.exe having a massive RAM leak that, over time would take up all available memory.Lastly, check your services on startup by typing "msconfig" and "services.msc" into run and looking through them, disabling and setting unneeded services to manual.Warning!Do not disable anything that you don't 100% understand by the name of the s
ervice, because you could cause a chain effect where 1 seemingly unrelated service that doesn't start automatically on boot will cause another to fail to initialize and so on, which could effect more important things such as network connectivity or hardware plug and play. This is why it is vital that you create a system restore point before attempting anything in the services.msc or the startup and services tabs within MSConfig while Microsoft processes are unhidden. You should check out your version of Windows on the "Black Viper" website if you want to get more into depth with this, which will have a list of the safest services that you can disable for increased performance and bootup times. If none of these things works, then, unfortunately, if you can't find the answer on tech forums through searching on Google, you will have to backup your Appdata and personal files to an external disk and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows.Good lu
 ck!

Hello,I would recommend performing a disk cleanup apart from others. The disk cleanup feature cleans up unnecessary files that are filling in your harddisk space, and so there may be a lot of unneeded stuff there. The worst experience was with my desktop computer which junked, well in excess, more than 7.5 GB.Also, if you are facing these kinds of issues, take the time to restart or shut down and reboot your computer more frequently. Not sure if it'll help, set the computer if it's a desktop to high performance. it may give a better performance. The mode I'm talking about can be found in the power options.+, Go to startup options and disable some programs that may start when the computer turns on.If you are running windows 7, I know what kind of dam slowness the computer could go through. I got bord of windows 7 last year and switched to windows 8.1 which works better for me.Cheers.

Re: need help from someone who knows their way around computer issues

Well I'd firstly do a disk cleanup in admin mode and clear the windows update file s and a few other things.Next, I'd actually try to clear out the dust from the unit with come sort of compressed air, compresser for vacuum cleaner there are special ones for units I have one of those. Now, I'd also regrease the sync if you can compound is dirt cheap 3 bucks here in new zealand.Over that hmmm. From now on it gets harder.1.  you run virus and malware, done.2 you run your disk cleanup and thats done.3.using ccleaner or msconfig check what you have starting up, I usually remove/disable anything I don't need, that is absolutely necessary. This windows 7 box for example has been slimmed down to my reader and the security software. Now I have other systems some of them old which has  backup software and a few drivers for hardware some with itunes and a few other things and some can't be slimmed.I'd also do a full registry clean at least run the scanners 3 times to make sure you get it all cleaned though that is controvertial if that solves anything. You have just about gone through everything you can do yourself. If you can get sighted help I'd firstly suggest you run one of the off the shelf disks like ultimate boot disk and run cpu/ hard drive/ memmory tests.I had a friend's system become unstable due to a dead ram chip.Next the hard drive could be going maybe could also be heat.Check the fans, the cpu fan if it goes you may not hear it  or any small fan die the big fan well you may hear that.I'd also replace the stock psu if you can, it may be bad, on an old i3 I have had for years on 2 occasions we have replaced the psu because it went bad you can still get a stock psu for about 100 bucks. In both cases that fixed things to a point where things continued to work. The main fan may be going bad to.Failing that I'd just reformat and try to install things and see when things come back, it could always be a bad driver or software update whatever you need kill what you don't.If nothing works you could have a bad board and if its a bad board you will have to replace the entire thing, a board costs almost as much as a new unit so its not worth replacing. You could have a bad card or fan on a card to.I have had it where a friend had to many cd drives stuck in his system and not enough fans/ air gaps or vents. He removed one of the drives but later upgraded his case and fans to suite his requirements.

With a PC that old it could easily be a hardware issue, but trying to pinpoint the issue and fix it would require patience and possibly money.  Of course, I'd honestly say that keeping it around that long is playing at optimism, particularly since it belonged to someone else before hand.  My primary PC was working perfectly fine, until I had to leave it alone for roughly 4 months owing to having moved roughly 1500 miles away from it.  What happened to it between then and there?  I have no idea, but it was 4 years old, had already undergone various malware attacks, and was probably on its way to retirement anyway.  it might be the fans; it could be the soundcard.  All I know is that the event log didn't look good whatsoever and wasn't worth my time or my sanity to investigate.  I kept it disconnected from the internet, grabbed everything off of it and replaced it.  I'm going to miss it ever so much, because they just don

Hi,Try completely wiping the drive and installing a new copy of Windows. That will probably clear anything software related. I'm pretty sure it;s software. The problem with Windows is that you get viruses and when uninstalling programs, little bits and pieces are left all over the place. This is the main reason I switched to OS X.

Re: need help from someone who knows their way around computer issues

It all comes down to the simple fact, most windows boxes last no more than 5 years before a noticeable decline in performance. I'd honestly recommend just selling the system maybe it'll go for around $300 or something, with a fresh new install of windows. Then I'd seriously recommend a mac, that's a better windows box than a windows machine itself, which is pretty sad, but true. You won't have any bloatware going this route, and if you can afford it you really won't regret it.

Re: need help from someone who knows their way around computer issues

First of all, if your virus and malware scans found something, then a backup and reformat will be the best thing you could do. you see, is not what you do find that is the problem there, it is what you don't find. If I was coming up with a peace of malware and or a virus, I would not want you to find nor remove the part of it that is giving me the most useful bits of info. So, those parts would most likely be hiddenin some importent windows file that windows access during day to day use. You may have got it all, but still. As for reg cleaners, I question them a good bit. Now I wish that MS didn't include a reg, but they did. Getting the dust out of your machine will most likely be of help, but if I had to guess, I would tell you to have someone of whom you trust to do a check on your harddrive itself. It seems old enough for problems to start creeping up. Then again, if it software, then reinstalling windows would help, but that is a pain if you can't see.

Exactly how old is the machine? If 75% of the drive's free, the recycle bin's empty, the only other thing I'd suggest is clearing your browser cache as that can really accumulate big-time. Remember when you shut down your computer to restart it to give the drive 30 seconds to spin down. This, is why I recommend ssd's instead, your computer will thank you for it. A hard disk drive is naturally gonna be slower than a solid state drive.
