Yes, this is true. All the w1 chip does is icloud connection, and probably the in-ear detection technology as well. It's bt4 on steroids.

Yes, but the airpods are still bt4. The chipset is different than the protocols it supports. Airpods work with any bluetooth device not just ios devices. I believe that w1 chip is mainly there to facilitate the quick switching amongst devices and getting connected

The iPhone 8 and 8+ as well as the iPhoneX use bluetooth 5. They need to come out with airpods2 for them to be bluetooth 5 compatible. At that point though, i will probably ditch my 6s+ and go with airpods and an 8+.bluetooth 5 has 4 times the range and 2 time

If they could bluetooth5 the Miccus Minijack transmitters, I'm sure that could fix that audio quality. Even so, the audio may have a tapedeck like static under it, but the louder you have your audio the lesser you hear the hiss noise. Other than that, the quality

I've heard that Apple's AirPods have low latency. I suspect it's because they're using their own custom codecs. I already have the Miccus Minijack TX4 and the Miccus SR-71 headphones. When they're paired together, it's exactly like using a wired pair of headphones

I think that's why I can be almost proud of the bluetooth performance on my android. Extremely low-latency. This would defeat the purpose, but you can always get a transmitter and plug it in your phone, but this is obviously still no excuse for Apple
