Hi,So I've tested out BrailleBack, and note, my device is still on Android 10. Now here's my question: Are there any more commands than the 17 showed in the keyboard help screen? If not... Off. They have a ways to go.Is there a comprehensive list of keystrokes? Cuz the ones I found are SUPER bare bones and only show like 10.

Re: BrailleBack Now

Please don't give the argument you can fix it yourself, just don't. First, I don't receive any kind of compensation to do it, and let's face it, people who can fix source code of an Android app probably work on a full time job anyway and don't have a reason to fix something for a huge company which should just do it. What is the accessibility team paid for, waiting for people to fix their mistakes? Second  and more important, Google won't accept a single pull request on those open source projects, both Talkback and brailleback. I am lazy to look at the sources right now, but I am 99 percent sure that the code for Brailleback on GitHub is out of date and not even the latest version. It's just  there, it does not mean that you can submit patches to Google and fix things, many of which are wrong on a system level and need fixes in the Android itself. So before this makes you angry, go look at the Talkback code on GitHub, visit the closed pull requests section and see how nicely Google receives patches. We could not even get Talkback to properly be a part of AOSP so that it works on custom  roms, even though one of the developers of Lineage wanted to help us fix the bug that Talkback can't be enabled on their setup wizard, it's useless if we can't get any support from Google to do so. So, I don't want to imagine working on some huge patches to Talkback, submitting them, and being ignored or told sorry, we don't  accept pull requests here, goodbye. Thanks for nothing. I imagine there might be a slight brailleback exception, and you should be able to at least add a support for a new display since the readme talks about this, but who knows.

Re: BrailleBack Now

@28 firstly, allow me to say, it's good to see someone not bashing Android just because they either tried it a long time ago or never. I use Braille, but not a lot, I mean, I have a little hearing loss in my right ear, but not enough to justify speech not being an option. Plus, all the displays I've ever used have been supported. But honestly what makes me more angry is when people, some of which I know know how to help update Braille back (https://github.com/google/brailleback), just sit there and bitch about it. Please don't bitch if you're not going to even try to fix it and you know how to fix it. You, as far as I know, don't, but it still angers me as yeah, Google might not be the best at Braille support. But I still don't agree it's complete crap. iOS still does outdo it, though.@27 fair enough. I almost always use an external keyboard, so I wouldn't know.

Re: BrailleBack Now

Okay, you want more than just the simple explanation of it being crap? I'll explain to you then, since I've *used* Braille Back. I've wanted to *love* Android. I spent close to a year with Android, so stop assuming crap!First, the supported devices. Imagine this. You're a person who is deaf-blind, and you have a braille display that you like, but it's not exactly the top 10 most common ones, but it works for you. You don't have that much money, so you decide to get an Android phone. So you get a Google Pixel because updates and gotta have labels accessibility API's so your screen reader is worth using. So you then look into Braille Back, because if it's anything like JAWS or even NVDA, it should support your braille display.•APH Refreshabraille•APH Orbit Reader 20•Baum VarioUltra•Baum VarioConnect•Esys EuroBraille•Freedom Scientific Focus Blue (14 and 40 cell models)•HandyTech (Basic Braille, Active Braille, Braille Star, Braille Wave, Braillino, Easy Braille)•Harpo Braillepen 12•HIMS (BrailleSense, Braille EDGE, Smart Beetle)•Humanware Brailliant (1st generation and BI models)•Optelec Alva (BC640, BC680)•Optelec EasyLink 12 Touch•Papenmeier Braillex Trio•Seika (notetaker and 40 cell display)Meanwhile, the iOS list contains many more commands, the full list is here: https://support.google.com/accessibilit … 5226?hl=enNow, after you even get the phone, you have to *install* the app! Yes, it doesn't come with TalkBack! For us who are blind but not deaf, that's fine. But for those who are deaf-blind, that means using an assistant that much more. This is a huge slap in the face for people who are deaf-blind, and thera re more that I'll get into. So you have to have TalkBack enabled, and install BrailleBack, set up the display through Bluetooth, and then set it up to be used in Brailleack settings. At least in iOS, there's just one place you go to set up braille, and it just takes that one setup process.next, there's no way of muting just TalkBack speech or sounds. Yes, you can *work around this* by turning down the volume. Sure. But that's a sorry excuse for bad user experience and design. I don't give a freaking crap what anyone else says, what excuses they give to all-mighty Google who can do no wrong, that is very poor and very unprofessional. This means that a deaf-blind user will have to keep their phone muted, or, as told to me by a Google employee, "just plug a pair of headphones in." That's stupid. That's another slap in the face. And that's why i believe that no blind people should use Android because of their mistreatment of braille users.Next, the commands. I'll put forth here that I used BrailleBack with a Vario Ultra 20 braille display. This *is* supported by BrailleBack. The commands are very non-standard. It's like they didn't look at any previous system for braille entry besides BRLTTY, which is just as non-standard. Space with L goes to the top of the screen in just about every other system, even in iOS. What does it do in BrailleBack? It opens Learn Mode. Okay, I could get used to that I suppose. But there are commands like pressing up on the navigation stick and pressing a dot that's rather awkward to press.Next we have the fact that you cannot read Google Books with it. I don't think you can even read Kindle books with it. Even if you can read Kindle books, Google books is the thing you'll look at first probably, as it's the thing installed. All you can do is have Google TTS read the book to you. You can't even read the thing with TalkBack. I may be wrong here, but for Deaf-blind people, who cannot hear, text matters, a lot, and not having access to a built-in service is just another nail in the coffin. Even for me, as a blind person with mild hearing loss only, when I have headaches, I can't stand hearing much of anything, but I can read a bit. So being able to just sit in my rocking chair with a book reading on the braille display, it's very freeing. Also, I can concentrate on materials far better with braille. So if I'm reading a book on programming, I *need* to have the ability to read that in braille. Also again, there's the fact that you can't mute speech. So, if I want to listen to music and read silently, nope. The accessibility volume helps, yes, definitely. But what if I then want to check text messages with speech? i'd have to turn the volume back up again. Now, typing. Reading Braille is wonderful, but typing it is even more freeing when using a touch screen device. You have to set BrailleBack's keyboard as default, as it can't just interact with the text field itself through system methods or anything, it needs its own keyboard. That's just one more step you have to go through to set it up. Compare that to iOS, where it acts just like any other modern screen reader. Just pair and go!Now, listen. I *want* to be proven wrong, on **all** of my points. I would ***love*** to be able to go to my boss Monday and say "You know, I was wrong ab

Re: BrailleBack Now

Comes from everywhere. How do you navigate by buttons, checkboxes, form elements? Oh yeah, Talkback is the inovative screen reader that groups everything under one element called controls. How do you navigate a table by row and column? You don't, because Talkback does not have vertical navigation. None of these apply if you use an external keyboard though, I guess that is the only way of accessing the web in 2020.

Re: BrailleBack Now

Hi.at 19 your hole post speaks of no technical knolledge what so ever.Firstly, because of the differences in the android and iOS architectures, iOS doesn't need as many system resources as android. i think the latest iPhone has 4 to 6 gb of ram and if you look at benchmarks, it basically leaves all the android phones behind it, points wise.Secondly, components need batterie power, that's basic knolledge, but saying that a batterie is bad due to the MA it has doesn't really work. Hardware components need less and less energie to function, and the SE is a low budget phone, so you can't expect it to have a freaking 3000 MA batterie inside.Greetings Moritz.

Re: BrailleBack Now

@15 now that post right there screams of factual information. And what exactly did you tell the OP about braille support on Android? That's right, nothing, because you most likely don't even use braille with your phone. If you did, you would know it's as basic as it gets, and Narrator probably does it better on Windows at this point. No problem though, keep defending multy billion dollar companies, I am sure they need that. I will always admit when something sucks about iOS. Example? The volume management is far superior on Android, and I hate that I can't make Voiceover louder than the currently playing media. The problem is that the things Android does wrong are basics of a screen reader, and they include things such as completely garbage web support. No problem though, while we still can't use braille without speech on Android, Apple just gave you the option for auto advancing your display. Brailleback will get that, in a few years, decades...

Re: BrailleBack Now

I honestly don't know what to say to people who say Androidaccessibility is bad. If you don't try a modern Android version than you are ignorant about Android accessibility and you should never talk about it

Re: BrailleBack Now

@10 I can not see how you think android accessibility is crap. Have you tried android in the past 5 years? If not, please go try more modern android before basing android's accessibility off of stuff you tried ages ago. I used to do the same thing, but it is better now. It's not perfect, no, but it's not, as you put it, crap.BrailleBack does, in fact, work with screen readers aside from talkback, and last i checked, you can also do commands with it. It supports my BNT fine, as well as my brailliant, so I'm not sure what's going on there.

Re: BrailleBack Now

Same as it always was, crap like the rest of Android accessibility. As I've always said, if the accessibility API's are crap, then what comes above them can't be much better. The OS is the *foundation* of all accessibility on that OS.

Re: BrailleBack Now

That's useful to know. However, can you perform CSR specific commands with it? If no, that's really basic and I would not say it works. If yes, then that's indeed great.

Re: BrailleBack Now

@nidza07, I've had success using BrailleBack with CSR, so it does indeed work with screen readers other than TalkBack.

And worst of all, it doesn't work with notetakers, like the Braille Note Touch plus that I will buy sometime in the future.

Yeah, and not have any sound at all. That's not a solution, moreover this won't work if your device is on Android 7 or below.

Re: BrailleBack Now

It's important to note that soft braille keyboard and advanced braille keyboard are apps that allow you to type braille on screen. The original poster is asking about braille display support on Android.Quite honestly, if you depend on a braille display, don't waste your time. Braille back just sucks. You can't use it without Talkback, and even if you do use it with Talkback, you can't turn the speech off to independently use braille. This isn't the only problem though, many commands are inconsistent, most notably when scrolling lists, and some are just completely unavailable making it impossible to use all Talkback features. It largely depends on the display itself, but nobody told me they had a great time using their display on Android.

Re: BrailleBack Now

Until Android 11 comes out for more devices, it works ... alright. Keep in mind, commands will depend on which Braille display you have.Pressing the letter L with the space bar, will list what commands you have after it’s connected. You “for now” can’t change said commands for Braille Back. Alternatively, there is the app called “Advanced Braille Keyboard,” Which you may want to take a look at. It’s available in the Play Store.
