Re: Thinking of bying a cheap windows 10 laptop, have some questions

These days ebay is no different to the likes of Amazon. Pretty much everyone who sells on Amazon, also sells on ebay. You're just as protected when buying from a seller via ebay as you are Amazon. Most of those millions of refurbished computers are there because people get rid of them after two years because they've slowed down. All sellers have done to most of them to call them refurbished is test them, reinstall the OS,  and give them a wipe with a damp rag. You just need to swap out the drive and you're set. Most of us like to have everything brand new and bang up-to-date, so a lot of that stuff on ebay is in perfect condition. The more you shop on there, the more you find this out. I've bought tons of stuff off ebay, including two so-called refurbished small form factor dells for under 140GBP (177USD), and they both work fine. I've had one for around two years, and the other for nearly a year. I'm now completely confident buying used desktops on ebay. If they're faulty and it wasn't mentioned in the description, we're protected and we'll get our money back.

Re: Thinking of bying a cheap windows 10 laptop, have some questions

To answer your questions:1. narrator works during all interactive parts of setup. replacing your operating system takes some time, and during that prosedure narrator won't work but you won't need to provide input either way. To start narrator, you hit ctrl + windows + enter. Just try that key combination every once in a while and wait until you hear speech. If you use your builtin pc speakers, Windows setup might also start using cortana, depending on the language selected. Then it'll start asking questions automatically.2. No, the upgrade won't whipe your hard drive *if* everything runs correctly. So do make backups. If you have the means though, keep as little as possible, reinstall your programs and copy back your files from another hard disk. That'll start you off with a clean slate and ensure that no old junk get's taken along3. If you choose to do an upgrade install anyway nvda should come up talking. I've only had it fail in a few edge cases.4. You can download windows in several ways, the media creation tool can be used, you can also download an iso file directly which can either be booted or it can be mounted and setup.exe can be started from inside windows.5. To my knowledge, only bsc games break. Aprone's games andd kitchensinc games work correctly. In addition, can you give us the name and model number of your laptop, and/or it's specifications? That'll allow us to give you better advice if upgrading is the best path forward or if getting yourself a new one is better.

i just bought an RCA cambio laptop. it did not come yet. still waiting on it to be delivered from amazon. i have amazon prime so it should be here by saturday.it has the following specs.windows10 home 32bit.32gb flash storeage with 2gb ram. intel atom z8350 quad core processor, 1.4ghz with turbo boost up to 1.9ghz. one usb 3.0 port, one micro usb port, mini HDMI, and micro sd card slot. it's a detachable laptop that can detach from its physical keyboard and turn into a touch screen tablet. got it off amazon for $140. walmart sells it for $99. since windows10 ran very good on an old 2005 windows vista laptop dual core processor, this aught to run pretty good for what i need.

Hi.No I don't think I would buy something as important as a computer from ebay. I checked out that computer shop website and it looks good. I would like to buy locally to support stores in my area, but the only one I know does repairs and builds custom computers. I would love a computer made exactly to my specifications, I just don't have the money to do that right now though which is why I'm looking for low-cost stuff.I didn't see what shipping and tax costs on that site, which would be good to know, I just don't want to go through the process of creating an account just to find that out. I do like there pricing though. As always thank you for all your input!

Re: Thinking of bying a cheap windows 10 laptop, have some questions

It's definitely good to get recommendations for places which sell used computers though, I wouldn't just buy one from some random person on Ebay, but that's just me. As a previous poster did recommend the service he linked to, and at a cursory glance the site looks professional, that's really all you need. But definitely do a bit of shopping around and read reviews where you can. Also, Microsoft is still officially supporting the free upgrade to Windows 10, but they're keeping it pretty hush hush. Why wouldn't they, if they think they can make more money?

Hello. I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this but you can buy off lease laptops from a re-seller. There is a place here in Orlando that gets those computers and upgrades and cleans them up and sells them for very good prices. And yes they ship. You can get an older model i5 or even an i7 for about $230 or so. I personally exclusively buy my computers from them now except for the gpd win 2 of course. Here is the link to their store. https://refreshcomputers.net/shop/

I googled download windows 10 home, which is not for free. I didn't know that all you have to do is get the creation tool and follow the steps. I almost spent a hundred dollars for absolutely no reason! I wonder if people know about being able to get a free windows upgrade if you have windows 7 or later? I sure didn't until today.

Hello.I gave you all a thumbs-up, thanks for all the great info! I checked and windows 10 home is not free, I lookked and the Microsoft store and it's 139 USD.I have a few questions about the update.1 When I am making the transition to windows 10 will I still be able to turn on narrator during the setup?2 Will the upgrade wipe my entire hard drive? I need to know because if so I have some things I need to copy first.3 I have NVDA on my computer now, the setup won't disrupt my using that will it?4 I didn't get to see what windows 10 comes as is it an .ISO file? I've never had much luck figuring those out. If it's a .exe or .msi, that's simple for me to do. The webpage just says it's a download it doesn't give details on what exactly the download is.5 Can I still play games like kitchens inc. or aprone's games? One more thing I came across something while reading the description of windows 10 they mentioned windows phones can be used. Do windows phones and tablets have accessibility built-in? Do windows devices have capability to use NVDA? Or is it narrator used on windows devices? Microsoft is a little vague on how this works.I know that went off-topic, I was thinking about swiching service providers and was curious if windows phones are accessible to the blind. Thanks for reading!

Re: Thinking of bying a cheap windows 10 laptop, have some questions

To add to flackers's comment, if budget is an issue, you can also upgrade your current laptop with an ssd. If you've got 230 dollars to spend, that's most likely a better thing to do rather than buy a completely new laptop. FOr 230 dollars you're not going to get a good laptop, I doubt you can get an ssd in it. Also, the windows upgrade is still free last time I checked, you'll have to google it. So if you can make backups you can always try upgrading your current laptop and see the results. You can rollback to windows 7 within 30 days, if I remember correctly

Re: Thinking of bying a cheap windows 10 laptop, have some questions

I appreciate this isn't something most people would even consider, and it's not as true for laptops as for desktops, but I personally wouldn't buy a new PC anymore. You can get a used one on ebay, put your own SSD in it, and have a good as new high spec PC for relative peanuts. If anything's wrong with it, you can send it back whether the seller says they accept returns or not. Based on experience, the main thing that slows a desktop PC down is a cluttered hard drive. If the hardware is still in working order after 5 years, it'll most likely still be working in another 5, so replacing the drive makes it work as good as new. This might be irrelevant as you're moving to 10 and it's a lot harder to turn stuff off, but the first thing I do with a new PC is turn off automatic updates. I'm using win 7 now that has never seen an update, and it still works fine, is as fast as it was on day one,  and I don't care much about so-called security vulnerabilities. In my experience, it's updates that cause PCs to start running slow after a few years. I personally much prefer desktop PCs as my primary home computer. I like the small form factor Dells that are around the size of a PS2 or DVD player. I mean, powerful well-made laptops tend to cost a lot more than equivalent desktops, and if you hook up a wireless keyboard, all you have on your lap is a very slim light keyboard. If you can't see the screen, and don't need your PC to be mobile, desktops are far and away a much better option for a home computer.

HI,And another point of interest, the newer versions of nvda ocr only work with windows 10, not a huge addition to the list, but when you use OCR every so often, you'd be surprised how convenient it works.I'd say, windows 10 is more stable then windows 8 ever was, however that isn't to hard, in my oppinion, but as others said, it only gets better, in stability, and access wise.Greetz mike

Re: Thinking of bying a cheap windows 10 laptop, have some questions

Windows 10 is better than ever before and it does not have any major bugs in the current version. The setup is accessible from the very first moments you start interacting with it. Whether you're setting up the computer for the first time or reinstalling Windows, You can turn on Narrator with ctrl+Windows+enter.Note: Narrator might not turn on right away, so you may have to wait a little bit until any process finishes and Narrator turns on. From then on, you can finish the rest of the setup procedures very easily and comfortably.NVDA can be used in any way you want, either installed or portable. NVDA is well integrated into Windows 10 and every application works well with it. Windows 10 Essentials add-on can be added to NVDA for better access in some preinstalled apps.Another point I think it is of interest to you is customisation. Windows 10 can be customised so that it look more like Windows 7 that you're currently using. You can replace start menu and install Classic Shell. You can disable many other things, such as Lockscreen. You can enable old apps, such as paint, Windows Photo Viewer, Calculator, and so on. CCleaner will help you uninstal some apps that you may not use, such as weather, sports, people, or any other I can't remember at the moment.

Re: Thinking of bying a cheap windows 10 laptop, have some questions

Hello,Windows 10 is awesome and NVDA works very well. Windows S mode is essentially a version of Windows that lacks the ability to install traditional X86 desktop applications. All your programs must come from the Windows Store. As a result, you're restricted to Narrator as your screen reader and Edge for a web browser.Windows 10 Home will work fine for you unless you need advanced features like BitLocker, Hyper-V, the ability to host a Remote Desktop session, etc. I use Home on all my Windows 10 devices and have no issues. Even if you need those features, there are alternatives that you can use.You don't need NVDA to set up Windows 10. Take the computer out of the box, turn it on, wait about a minute, and then press Control+Windows+Enter to start Narrator. If you haven't tried Narrator in a few years, you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's much better than it was in Windows 7, 8, or even the initial versions of Windows 10. Microsoft shows no signs of stopping, so it's only going to get better with new updates.

As a thought, dual boot Windows 7 and some flavor of lightweight Linux. Now for your questions...1.Yes2. It locks down the system, you can get rid of it by activating Windows through the MS store with a Microsoft account.3. My old Acer decided to die randomly because of Windows updates.4.Yes, Home's the home version5. Narrator works with the installer, unlesss they changed it.
