Yes..I was/am(?) planning to buy such a DAC..but it would cost me the

Hi
I am using Transporter with Behringer DEQ2496 in FX loop.
I can now see clearly that certain albums are recorded with clipping.
How can I reduce digital amplitude of the signal before it fed into
DEQ?

You know that won't work?

I opened Money For Nothing (FLAC) from Brothers In Arms (DVD-A), and
using Audacity/Find Clipping found a lot of fragments..
Running sox on the server is an option, but I do not want to do that
for high-rez files, it will be very heavy
BTW, some other DACs know to overcome this..

certain DACs, such as Audio Logic XL, do handle this record without
distortion.
Transporter is just garbage in/garbage out...
I have SHM-CD version of same album, and it goes without clipping and
sounds better..
No cure?
What do you do, guys?

You need to seek out better masters of your favourite music. Often the
oldest releases are the best. Coincidentally these are the cheapest,
for e.g. in Amazon Marketplace.

No they don't. They simply subsitute something else for the clipping -

This DVD-A sounds fine to me. I have 5 different versions of this album

Phil,
I did again, and analyzed 6-channel WAV file in Audacity.
There is clipping there.
So, then, maybe the disk is not good, and I return to original question

What's probably happening is that the DEQ output is too high. Try

Yes? How do I do that?
By adjusting the output level of the DEQ - I forget which menu it's in.

Spend your money elsewhere. I actually returned a few CDs in the mid
90s when this loudness garbage first started - thinking they were
defective. I finally learned 5-6 years back that these products are
actually defective by design. Its sad - but they really have ruined
some very good music

That could be it.

I don't believe Brothers in Arms is a good example of loudness wars -
I consider it to have about the most dynamic range of anything in my
collection... it doesn't seem afraid to have quiet sections of music.
I suspect the issue here is with the outboard hardware.

Still, the question is why some DACs (such as Audio Logic XL) do
reproduce better recordings with clipping

So, do you think that DEQ inflates overall gain during EQ
processing?
To which value did you set that property, could you

Hi Michael123,
Have you read the good article by Chris Tham on this subject? 'Here's
a link if you are interested'
I had a look at Money For Nothing DVDA and it probably does cross the
line a bit in clipping but not in overcompression. 95% of the clipping
is really nothing, the peaks are just brushing the limit and getting
flagged. But there are a few peaks that clearly cross the line. The
track is so loud
