[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to fight clipping due to high (recorded) volume?

2010-05-19 Thread michael123
Hi I am using Transporter with Behringer DEQ2496 in FX loop. I can now see clearly that certain albums are recorded with clipping. How can I reduce digital amplitude of the signal before it fed into DEQ? -- michael123

I opened Money For Nothing (FLAC) from Brothers In Arms (DVD-A), and using Audacity/Find Clipping found a lot of fragments.. Running sox on the server is an option, but I do not want to do that for high-rez files, it will be very heavy BTW, some other DACs know to overcome this.. --

snarlydwarf certain DACs, such as Audio Logic XL, do handle this record without distortion. Transporter is just garbage in/garbage out... I have SHM-CD version of same album, and it goes without clipping and sounds better.. No cure? What do you do, guys? -- michael123

You need to seek out better masters of your favourite music. Often the oldest releases are the best. Coincidentally these are the cheapest, for e.g. in Amazon Marketplace. Darren -- darrenyeats

Spend your money elsewhere. I actually returned a few CDs in the mid 90s when this loudness garbage first started - thinking they were defective. I finally learned 5-6 years back that these products are actually defective by design. Its sad - but they really have ruined some very good music

I had a look at Money For Nothing DVDA and it probably does cross the line a bit in clipping but not in overcompression. 95% of the clipping is really nothing, the peaks are just brushing the limit and getting flagged. But there are a few peaks that clearly cross the line. The track is so loud
