Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone tried a 96k 24 bit download

2009-07-04 Thread bobertuk

I tried playing a 24/96 free download from Gemmel, hoping that SOX would
downsample it - but it didn't. No audio output generated at all!

First I tried with the .wma file and get the error:
0277: [09-07-03 16:16:40.7919] Slim::Player::Song::open (341) Error:
Couldn't create command line for wma playback for
[file:///volume1/Audio/Music/Bob%27s%20Singles/07-MissaFortunadesperata-Gloria.wma]

Then I tried converting to 'flac' with dbPoweramp and get a different
error:
0278: /volume1/SSODS/bin/sox stio: Unknown output file format for '-':
File type `flac' is not known

SqueezeCentre is runing from a QNAP TS-509 NAS which should be quite
capable of transcoding with SOX - the errors don't seem to indicate a
problem with processor power either. Both files play on PC in
'MediaMonkey' and normal 'flac' plays without a problem from the NAS.

Any thoughts appreciated?

Bob

What version of SC are you running - it looks like you need a later
version of SOX. From memory you need SOX 14.2 or later.

check which version is installed (in Linux)?

Thanks Phil,

Version check from the Linux command line is: sox --version

It returned version 13.00 so that was the problem. It looks as if the
QNAP SSOTS setup installs an earlier version of SOX but it can be
updated with QNAP's IPKG software. Only problem then is that the new
file is in the wrong place with wrong permissions. After putting it
(copying) v14.2 into the correct folder and setting the file permissions
correctly, the music file (flac) is playing.

Thanks again

Also if you are using a NAS, they are not fast enough to do the SOX
transcoding, so it's usually disabled, leading to the sample rate not
supported message.

I have found and installed SOX on my LinkStation Pro. Now, any 24-bit
96KHz file plays for a few seconds, then it stops while the SB3 says
rebuffering for a few seconds, then play resumes for a few seconds,
then it stops and rebuffers some more, etc.

Does this mean that LinkStation doesn't have enough horsepower for SOX
to downres the files, or do I need to configure something else?

That sounds exactly what the problem is.

How about configuring the down sampling to only use WAV and not
transcoding to FLAC as well?

That might work.

How about configuring the down sampling to only use WAV and not
 transcoding to FLAC as well?
In my File Format Conversion Setup, the only settings that show the
ability to select SOX are all for Ogg Vorbis files.

For FLAC file format, I have:

FLAC-FLAC-Native
FLAC-MP3-Disabled
FLAC-WAV-FLAC

In the last of those, there isn't an option for FLAC-WAV-WAV. If I
select FLAC-WAV-Disabled, nothing changes from what I was experiencing
before.

For WAV file format, I have:

WAV-FLAC-FLAC
WAV-MP3-Disabled
WAV-WAV-Native

Maybe I'm misunderstanding how these settings are supposed to work. Is
there a setting somewhere else specifically for the SOX downsampling?

I *think* you set FLAC - FLAC - Disabled and FLAC - WAV - FLAC

Which means the built in (as in built into the SB) FLAC decoder is
disabled, but for streaming FLAC files as WAV will use the FLAC decoder
on your PC.

If I set FLAC-FLAC-Disabled, when Squeezecenter is restarted,
FLAC-WAV is automatically disabled with no other option available, i.e.
I can't set FLAC-WAV-FLAC. In that state, I'm back to the situation
where I get the error Problem unable to play file type.

I don't have a problem playing the Linn hires stuff through a Duet (with
an external DAC) and SC 7.3.2. Plenty other irritations with 7.3.2. but
not that! It is worth persevering with the Linn downloads - the
recordings I have (discs and downloads) are superb. If you like
classical music, try the Mozart symphonies, Requiem, Bach St Mathew
Passion and Beethoven Piano concertos. Some of these are prize-winning
recordings. If you don't like classical music, try them anyway - you
can't go wrong with the Mozart symphonies and Beethoven Piano concertos
at the very least.

problem occurs with those files. All of these 24-bit files play OK in
 Winamp on my Windows PC.

The SOX and FLAC process needed to transcode 24/96 flac to 24/48 flac
is CPU intensive so 192kHZ must be even more so.

Regarding your NAS can it run SOX ? (is there an sox exe for that
processor)
Does it have the cpu/memory for it ? a benchmark would be my own small
1,2gHZ 1GB mini-itx it runs ca 70% CPU on 7.3.3 90% with 7.3.2 when
transcoding 24/96 to 24/48

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone tried a 96k 24 bit download

2009-05-31 Thread firedog

I've downloaded some from HDTracks.com

I think it definitely adds something - music sounds more musical, less
digital. A noticeable improvement, but not earth shaking. If you don't
have an above average rig, you might not hear the difference, though. I
play them through Foobar and a digital out to my DAC, so my setup is
designed to deal with hirez files.

I also think the advantage will probably be most apparent on well
recorded classical and jazz albums. I'm not sure it will help a lot on
pop music which has been volume compressed (or maybe/hopefully they
won't volume compress on Hi-rez tracks).

The selection is limited, especially in pop/rock. I did download one
rock album, The Kinks Preservation Act 1, which I had only on vinyl
and illegal mp3s.

The original LP wasn't particularly good sounding - pretty standard for
its time. I think the 24/96 version sounds much better than the LP, if
that means anything to you.

As noted before, more depends on the quality of the work by musicians

Do you want to hear some Hi-res magic? Try
http://www.2l.no/hires/index.html

Download the DXD 24BIT/352.8kHz versions, as well as the 24BIT/96kHz
Flac files. You can play the DXD tracks with Windows Media Player 12
(comes with Windows 7 RC).

Gorgeous stuff, and a good introduction to 2L.

I know some of those tracks in 24/96, and I'm sure also these are good.
But the sampling rate of the DXD tracks is just ridiculous. There is no
reason to sample at 352. Almost all the arguments for using, say, 24/96
over 16/44 are no longer valid in the case of 24/352 over 24/96.
Moreover Lavry's paper on digital sampling makes it clear that its not
technically possible to utilise all bits and samples in 24/352. Sample
at 352 and loose bit-precision.

No doubt you are perfectly correct, but the music still sounds lovely -
and it was free. It is there to be downloaded and tried if you wish. If
you don't, then there's no cause for a coronary, or a world wide ban. 2L
has some excellent stuff. I tend to take the view that if they wish to
make it available, good for them. I enjoyed the tracks; admittedly not
over my sound system: just over my computer speakers. To tell you the
truth, I've also often enjoyed music played over my kitchen radio,
ridiculous though that might be also. I'll get over it.

Sorry, but can you provide a link to the Lavry paper? I can't imagine
why it's not technically possible to utilize all the data. It may not
be worthwhile, or economically challenging, but I'm not aware of any
reason why it's not technically possible

FWIW, I agree that the sampling rates of the DXD tracks are insane, but
if the hardware is available, why not use it in the recording/mastering
phases of production? The only downside of the higher precession is
higher cost

Cheers, Dave

That is a smashing good deal!

To tell you the truth, in my mid range Naim system I could not hear
obvious differences between 44.1/16 and 96/24 tracks. I've been called
deaf by other members but to me they both sounded very good on the
Transporter.

I can hear obvious improvements between a Naim Powerline or Hi-Line and
ordinary cables.

But dont buy it for the hires files alone. The Transporter is
extraordinary with 44.1/16 files alone. The rest is just bonus.

IMHO, the quality of the master/mix is far more important.
