I'm not sure why I'm not getting any response, but anyway
I'll try not to be annoying by posting the only relevant
info I have in this thread. If I'm being annoying, please
do let me know. 

While I'm not sure about ttys, my copy of 
UNIX(R) Network Programming Vol1  has the following text
with regard to using poll(2) with sockets:

the poll() interface, which we have to decide how we're going to 
make sense of these terms without STREAMS.
