I see many criticisms yet a lack of proposals for a suitable replacement.

The branch fixes the issue, ie the service does not crash anymore if I have a
remote calendar for which the credentials are not saved in evolution.

Well, I think I brought up several cases where having the spread was
handier, but that would be the main problem to solve, yes. That was my
favourite feature from the task list, and the launcher seems to have lost

Having both outgoing and incoming in one menu is a lot of stuff.
If I see a mail icon with number 2 or something indicating I have
a messages (which is kinda how a message icon should act)
I would expect that when I click it to either see my gmail account open to
that message, or at least see

and thats just it, a conversation shouldn't be nestled behind two clicks in
a menu on the top right of the screen.
I'd rather have the message just pop up in front of me then have to go
through a menu. That is about as close to real life as you can get.

I sometimes refer to the whole top right section as the system tray because
they are all (global) system items, in a tray ;)
Just as the system tray is being wiped down, the same should apply to the
context menu's. If this brings that around them I'm for it, but adding icons
and more sub menu's
Another gripe I have with this idea is that i'd love to see the sys-tray be
shrunk down to its bare bones leaving more tray space for applications. This
of course assumes that a single bar desktop is the future, ex.
windows/chrome-os. Hence the unity mock up:
Totally reasonable idea, makes sense on the desktop.

Look at the current software center. People aren't complaining that there's
no progress menu when they close it. The software center just understands -
like a secretary - that you don't want to be bugged about the task at all.
If I wanted, i could go talk to her. aka open the software center back
basically my logic is this,
close button = no distractions
minimize, notification.
open, open.
close a transfer and when it finishes it creates a notification like an
event.
Of course this reminds me of rhythmbox, which plays music when closed.
something that I know for a fact annoys Windows
(5 point exploding heart technique) of course this doesn't include the
actual contacts themselves should they appear in the menu.
In im world when there is someone you don't want to be notified about,
you typically don't want to hear about them at all and so you would right
