Do you know when he immigrated if you can approximate the date then you can
look him up on the passports which will give his parents' names and the
village he was from.

A good place to start would be the records from NS Estrela in Ribeira
Grande. The name Emilia is not common so that would help in searching. I
would compile as much information on this side to possibly have name to go
on and dates.
Also in thinking about her name Emilia de Jesus Borges makes me
Since I'm new I have a question, where are you all finding these
documents? birth, baptism, marriage, death that appear to be from
portugal and not records from the US?
Knowing how to find them might really help in my research, I'm also
going to take up one of your suggestions and that was to
Nformdsam,
You won't be able to find information on your ancestor in Sao Miguel, until
you find his birth date (or approximate) and freguesia (village) on Sao
Miguel. Immigration information helps too, as others have suggested. If
you don't have his freguesia, you'll need to do a lot of paper
Mike,
The baptism, marriage and death records are from the Azores Government
site at: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig. You will need to do a lot of
USA research first if you don't already know the village and Island as
there are a lot of villages on each Island. You will also need the
Neil,
I'm not sure of the name but it is Maria da not de. If it is a religious
name as Resendes it is not a Surname but a middle name. Women in this time
period usually did not have a Surname listed but just the religious. Do
not put the name Resendes in the Surname field of our genealogy
Since I know a number of list participants are from California, a FYI :) I have
attached poster advertising the 4 talks I will be giving in the next few days
in the San Jose area. You can also contact me for more information. The text of

Hi Shirley in CA,
Samantha,
Manuel P Aguiar died 15 Jun 1957 at his residence 52 Pitman St., Fall River,
leaving his wife Maria do Carmo Arruda Aguiar and sons Manuel P, John P., Dimas
P and Antonio P Aguiar of East Falmouth, and daughters Mary Teske, of San Diego
and Viola Medeiros and Georgiana Dube of Fall
Interesting my great grandfather was from Bretanha, He was living at 49
Pitman Street in 1927 when he died. Faria and Son Funeral home was at one
time owned by the husband of my great aunt Anthony Faria. George Pacheco
has done extensive research in Bretanha and might have some information.
FYI - Espirito Santo Church in Fall River, MA does not have a cemetery and
never did. My father's family also lived on Pitman Street and came from
Bretanha (My Mom's family came from there too but lived on Choate Street 2
streets away). Small world, indeed.

You are probably correct, I am not familiar with the area and my portuguese is
limited. The exact wording is dali o cemeterio. Thanks for the correction.

I would add that it may be Catharina Joam, deceased (i.e. defunta). Joam was
used in older records in place of what now is written as Joao.
