Hello group,
I don't usually post requests for help, but I think this is the right place
to ask this one before wasting time.
I'm looking for the American trail of my wife's great-grandfather, José

OK, I'm convinced. I ordered my Family Finder test earlier this evening,
and I did it through the Azores Group link.
Thank you for your insights. There will be more to come I suspect.

My Grandfather used the Machado last name when he first arrived in the
United States. I always understood his name to be Joseph Machado Avila. I
had an Italian Great-Aunt from Italy, she had the name Avila spelling as

Hi Adair,
What links do you think you have to Maria Borba? I ask because looking at
some of your older post and I don't see anything that lines up.

Ok so I tried a different spelling for Borba that I got from the book
History of Santa Clara. In there they say Barba, but her tombstone says
Borba. I know Borba was her fathers last name back in the Azores. I am
guessing this was a typo or something. No sign of her 2nd husband.

I think the Peninsular only sailed to the east coast of America. He would
have gone by train to California or Nevada.
I've got my Morton Allen Directory in a box, but I saw it the other day.
I'll look for it again later today.

Have either of you done the Family Finder DNA test?
Do you have the freguesia on Sao Jorge your families were from?
Just wondering--I have Sao Jorge roots and have done family finder tests

Hi Mary,
I have not yet done the DNA Test. My family is from Riberira da Areia near
Norte Grande and attended the Parish Senhora das Neves. My 2x Great
Grandmother Maria A. Borba's father was Antonio Pedroza de Borba. Maria
left the Azores around 1884 and remarried in the United States.
Joao,
The Peninsular (The Insular Navagation Co.) came to the USA on Jan 13, Mar. 7,
Jun 18, Jul 22, Sep 15, Nov 2 and Dec 16, 1898. That gives you the dates to
start searching on the Ellis Island database. Joao, go to this site to put in
the dates to search etc. : Stephenmorse.org or
Correction on the web site though: http://stevemorse.org/

There is a very interesting article about the Portuguese in Nevada put out
by the Nevada Historical Society as part of other Nevada history. It is a
big PDF download but the long article is well worth reading:
We probably connect somewhere. I have a Maria Borba and an Antonio Pedroso

Have you researched the CCA site for birth records?

Good thing he thinks about the multiple spellings of his name!

I know, his name, I believe, is Stephen Morse but when he first started his
website that domain name was taken and he had to use stevenmorse. Then he must
have bought out the other person because now, no matter how you type the name
the website comes up!

Hi Pam,
I haven't contacted Holy Cross. Their website says it cost $35.00 to get
the info from them. I have a picture of the tombstone that my dad took from
me and the info off the SFgeneology site. I'll try emailing Holy Cross to
see what they can do.
Thanks,

Hi,
I've been compiling a family tree of my mother's side. I'm looking for more
information on two sets of great grandparents.
Antone Victoria (1881-1951) and Anna Silva DeBragga (1880-?)
and
Annibal Escobar (1889?) and Felisbela Contente
All of our family in the U.S. is from Stonington, CT.
Eddie,
The California death index lists her as
Maria A Barba, 69 years old died 19 Jan 1913 in San Mateo County.
She doesn't appear in the 1910 census in the area under that name

I stumbled across that around 1 today. I posted about it. The interesting
part is that she doesn't appear at all under Barba or Borba in the 1910

Hi Fred,
I did know that Jose Maria Faria was mayor of Stonington. I do not need
their marriage certificate. I did, however, found his birth registration

Eddie,
Ancestry.com has San Mateo newspapers that cover 1928. Go to search all,
then choose California, go to the bottom of the page where Newspapers and
Periodicals are.
There are four different papers there. The Post is 60-63, San Mateo Times
is 25-28, The Times and Daily Leader 28-59, Times
There are a few newspaper archives sites that charge a fee.
