I read this list all the time. I've done my DNA test for the female line but
not family finder yet. My mother is a Silva through her father. She is from
Manteca/Escalon, Calif area. My 2nd great grandmother is Maria Inacia da
Silveira born in 1853 Calheta, Sao Jorge. Her spouse was Joao F
Thanks so much for that I've been trying to connect family members. My
grandfather George Silva and his brother Henry Silva married sisters, Nina and
Catherine.

Talked to my mom about the name issue. She said that Ava Arminda said they
changed their names on purpose. This may not be for every family, but this is
what she was told. They were really poor in the Azores, so when they came to
America they felt rich and they wanted rich names so they
rents (Silva) are buried there.

Just talked with my mom who called her brother. He said those were the only
names they know of. So you are probably getting better information. Spelling
and language are an issue.

The George (Jorge) b 1880 married to Arminda was born in the Azores, Sao Jorge.
He came to America in 1898. He had left the Azores with some cousins. Some of
those cousins got off in Brazil. Two stayed with him to America.
My mother remembers an Uncle Manuel and an Uncle John that

Jorge had been here earlier arriving in 1898.
