Wow! I know I'm a novice at this, but when researching my German and Irish
lines it seemed that things came so easily. I guess I became complacent
because I had thought I'd looked every place there was to find this
information. But then again, it seems the Azores is a completely different
The year I had for their marriage came from the 1900 census. It's highly
possible it was transcribed wrong. Thanks!!!

Hi Jim A,
I'd say that researching any immigrant ancestor (or at least European
immigrant ancestors) does have some commonalities. To research just about
anywhere in Europe, you need the village. And you'd use naturalization,
ships lists, etc to find that village.
There were more German and
I was one of the people on AOL with Cheri and Melody, it took me 15 years
to finally do research on the actual Azores. Because of the naming
tradition I thought it would be too hard and I might make a mistake and
trace the wrong family LOL But it wasn't as hard as I thought after all!!!
I just had

I'm trying to find information on my 3rd GGrandfather. Manuel Brune b1839
d1907. He arrived in the U.S. in 1865, Married Lugarda Espinosa in 1868.
His parents were Antonio Brune and Catharine Silveria of Pico.
I've been unable to find his place of arrival or naturalization records.
In the 1900

Jim,
Do you have other information (such as siblings' names) that could help ? I
found a couple Antonio Brum and Catarina Rosa, but they were too old to have
been Manuel's parents.
Brum as a surname does appear on Pico, but could be part of a combination, e.g.
Brum Rodrigues. Any chance of a
I don't have any of that information. I've even searched people in the

I see he died at Moss Landing. Is it possible he arrived as a whaler? There
might be mention of his name in some of the whaling histories of the area if he
was.
Just a thought.

The earliest record I found of him was the 1870 census. He lived in San
Rafael, Ca. and was a brick maker. I've searched the 5 names that are
listed with him with no luck. I thought being so close to San Francisco I
would find records there, but haven't yet. Whaling histories is a good
idea.
