This article is fascinating! I really want to know who ended up opening the
mysterious package wrapped in newspaper!
Was there any follow-up article?
Also, my Mom had never read the obituary for her grandmother Anna. She was
very appreciative of your efforts :-)
Thanks to everyone who responded
Thank you!

He is Antonio Souza Gonsalves. There is an UPEC death record for him dated
17 Mar 1936 at Ancestry.
Member 176 of Conselho # 56 East Oakland , joined 30 Jul 1913. Wife is Anna
Souza Gonsalves
He does not appear in the UPEC register for #56 at AzoresGenWeb. It ends
with 1911.
In the 1910 census
Thank you! This is great!

They had 2 daughters: Margaret (my grandmother) and Evlin/Evelyn(?). I
believe that at least one daughter was born in Nevada.

The obit for Antonio Gonsalves is not in the 1936 Oakland Tribune . I have
found that more Portuguese placed obits in the Oakland Post during the
1920s and 30s.
This can be found at the Oakland Main library on microfilm.

Sarah,
>From what I can tell, they were probably married in the U.S. Probably
MA?? Then they came to CA. Were any of their children born in MA? Did
they have a daughter Eva or some semblance of that name? 1936 obituaries
for Oakland are online but I don't know what month he died. Also,
The only Antonio Goncalves born in the town Santa Cruz, Flores around this
time is the one seen at the bottom right, born 8 Dec 1879
son of Jose Caetano da Silva Gonsalves and Emilia Rosa da Conceicao
They married in the US. My Dad is the historian, this is my Mom's side.
I'm looking for birth records.

Since you are searching for you mom's citizenship, I suggest you do an
Internet search for genealogy services and hire a company to do the

Sarah S,
I thought this was your mom's side???
I searched the entire Flores marriage book (it's basically an index of the
records that are online at the CCA) and there is no Antonio Gonçalves who
married Anna anywhere on the island. There is no Antonio Gonçalves getting
married in any parish on
Sarah, you may be in luck! There's a Flores marriage index. If no one beats
me to it, I'll try accessing it this evening.

Ola group,
Here's what I learned from my Dad:
"Antonio Goncalves b. Jan 8, 1877, Flores, m. Anna Diogo b. June 18, 1877,
Flores. Came to the US around 1902. Eventually moving to Carson City area
of Nevada where two children were born. Moved to Oakland abt. 1920. Antonio
died 1936, Anna in 1938.
Thanks for all of your help, guys! I'm going to call my Dad and get more
info.
As a side note, the absolutely gorgeous handwriting in some of these
documents *almost* makes up for their illegibility. Haha.
Stay tuned...

Hey Sarah could he be from Porto Formoso, Sao Miguel? I have a long line of
paternal male ancestor with Goncalves. I have lots of Antonio's who have
Antonio's as sons. Tell me a bit more about your grandfather or mom. What
was Antonio's wife's name?
