Pat, Have you gotten in touch with Suzanne Carreiro from the group? I know that Suzanne has family history on Carreiro's. Gail, It may be coincidental but I have an ancestor from Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores who immigrated to the Sandwich Islands in 1883 and his family with him. Two (2) of the children were Maria. His name was Jose de Sousa Vaz Junior, wife Maria do Santo Cristo and their children were: Jose, Maria, Luisa and Manuel. He and Maria were both 37 years old and the children' ages were 12, 10, 7, 3 and 1 year old. It is very common to have more than one child with the same first name on the islands and it doesn't mean that one of them may have died. The church recorded first names only. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia
Gail, There was a family at our school and all 3 girls were Maria, so they went by Maria Jose, Maria G. and Maria ?. There last name was Gomez. Many times when a family lost a child, they would repeat the name. One of my uncles had 2 Manuel's. In my Grandmother's fmily it looks like the first Maria had died and they renamed their next girl Maria. It was the custom of Portuguese families to name their first born son Emanuel or Manuel to honor our Lord, and the first girl Maria in honor of our Holy Mother. Remember the saying you don’t know who you are related too? It’s going to take some time for me to find out where my grandparents came from. On the de Souza family his first name doesn’t even show up on the ships list. I don’t know if he went by another name. I don’t know if he was married in Portugal or in Hawaii. His immigration was in 1883 and his marriage. It shows 2 girls by the name of Maria, one born in 1882 and one in 1883. I don’t know if they are the same in one person or different. It showed my grandmother had 8 children and 6 was living but what I had is 7 if I include the 2 Marias. If they had two Maria’s one could have died. I think there youngest child either died or moved with someone else. He was 4 years old in the 1900 census and doesn’t appear in the 1910 census. A lot of groundwork on this one. I just wish I could spend more time with it. Pretty soon I’m going to be really busy and won’t be able to do anything. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Locating the village or freguesia
Back when Azoreans had huge families many girls would be receive Maria as one of their given names (usually the first), yet go by their other given name socially. A cousin of mine who immigrated to California uses Maria professionally, but her family and friends all call her by her middle name; that way, when she gets a phone call or voice mail and the caller asks for Maria (or her middle name) she knows instantly whether it's business (or telemarketing/solicitation) or personal. It sounds like the information you need is the marriage of your great-grandparents Antonio da Costa and Maria Rosa Isabel. If your information is correct about Lagoa then you need to search the marriage records in that location. The two churches are Santa Cruz which is the Matriz or mother church and Nossa Senhora das Necessidades a newer and smaller church. The film from the family history center is Marriages for Santa Cruz #1438008 which has the marriage records from 1555 – 1870. I would start at the very end of the film and work back based on the fact that Jose da Costa was born on 15 Jun 1870. If he was the first child then you should be able to find the marriage record fairly easily. I do not have the information on NS Necessidades so I am not sure what years their records cover perhaps someone else on the list knows but I would look on that film only if I did not find them on the one above. But wait I just remembered Logoa is on the CCA website Check this record out http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/SMLAGSTCC1860-1869/SMLAGSTCC1860-1869_item1/P108.html The brides name is off a little but I think it is your great-grandparents. I will let others weigh in on this. The marriage date is 4 Jun 1867. Antonio da Costa about 1835 and his wife Maria Rosa Isabel about 1839 had a son Jose da Costa 15 Jun 1870 and three girl all listed as Maria 1872,1877 and 1881. Maybe you can point me where to start.
