OK, I think I came up with an idea to illustrate double first cousins.

I think the people that I used are fairly famous worldwide.

If you think of you and your first cousin, you are first cousins because you
share Grandma and Grandpa ___ in common.

Double first cousins share BOTH sets of grandparents in common.  You get a
brother and sister from one family marrying the sister and brother from the
other family.

I've use Desi Arnaz  Lucille Ball for one family and John F. Kennedy and
Jackie Bouvier Onassis as the other family.  Their kids marry each other and
we'll pretend they have you and me.  Change my gender to suit your needs on
the attached chart. (PDF - I think most people can view this).

I see Conceição, Feteira, Flamengos, Matriz da Horta, Pedro Miguel, Praia 
do Almoxarife and Praia do Norte there also, all for Horta (Faial).

Indeed, they have.

They've also added Ribeirinha and Salão to Horta (Faial). That completes 
all the Horta parishes.. Maybe someone can compare the list with the LDS 
microfilm index, and see if there's anything still missing.

From a personal point of view, I'm happy. My Azorean todo list was all in 
thes missing Faial records. I can now continue on that front..

Oh, and you married your first cousin?  Then you totally understand the
double first cousin thing!

When I had it first explained to me, it didn't make complete sense. Then
after it happened in my family it made sense.  It was hard to understand or
visualize the having BOTH grandparents in common.

Bell Rock (1405 passengers) which arrived in Honolulu on November 1, 1883.  
They then boarded a smaller boat to the island of Hawaii and landed in 
Laupahoehoe Point.

  Another vessel about 4 years later, Thomas Bell arrived on April 13, 1888 
from Funchal, Madeira which contained my maternal great-grandparents.  How can 
I see the names on this vessel and the other one.

  Is there a place to go for such information?  I am clueless and want to try 
and gather this information if I can.  If any of you have any experience, 
please share.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder Matches and the Population Finder bar

When FTDNA unveiled their new Family Finder matches page last week, each
match had a bar under their name.  If you pointed at it, you could see if
they were 80% European and 20% North African, for example.  Then on Friday,
it disappeared.

I called FTDNA to find out when it would be restored.  Never.  Too many
people called and complained that too much information was being shared.
So, if you want to know your match's Population Finder percentages, you are
going to have to email them. :(

  He was from Ponta Delgada and died in Cambridge.  That is the extent

Is it possible for FTDNA to add an option that would let those of us who would 
like to share the population information the ability to do so? I understand 
that some people are uncomfortable but most of us probably are not. I really 
liked that feature and thought that it helped narrow down how one might be 
related to various matches.

Are you only looking for Martin ancestors from Ponta Delgada?   I have Martins 
ancestors (not all with the Martins surname)who came to Northern California 
from Feteira, Faial and earlier from Rosias, Sao Jorge; Sao Mateus and Piedade, 
Pico; and Se and Bicoutos, Terceira.  It would be interesting to compare trees.

OK, better start a separate thread for this even if the conference is 5
weeks away.

I'll take people's suggestions to the conference.

So far I have:
1) Population Finder bar under the Family Finder matches (opt in button)
2) Diacritics support on the Gedcoms

So, if you want 1  2, go ahead and say so.  Then I can come armed saying I
have 25 people wanting these features!

As long as you're going to bring up the matter, Cheri, let me add my ,02 
euros worth:

Given there is already an option for user information to be made Private 
on Family Tree DNA, what not make the match bars also available for privacy 
or opt out? It seems such a waste to close off such rich information 
because of complaints from some users. As anyone can readily tell by 
looking at the various reports, most users are fully public with their 
information on the site. The site's now you see it, now you don't seems 
overkill, a massive solution to a much smaller problem.

A centimorgan is a unit of measure representing a 1% chance that a region
of DNA will recombine in a single generation. A centimorgan block
represents a continuous region of markers that HAVE NOT recombined and is
shared between two individuals. The longer the block, the higher the
probability a recombination event SHOULD HAVE occurred in that region. When
two individuals have a region in common with a high rate of recombination
they have a high probability of being related.

For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.  Click in the blue area on the right that says "Join this group" and it will take you to "Edit my membership."
