I have tried and tried to puzzle this out but cannot seem to make sense of
the paternal grandfather's last name for Sebastião (#3) - I see Verissimo

the paternal grandmother's names I can see Margarida but can't make
Maryann,
I would say Verissimo Theotonhio (Teotonio) and Rita Margarida
The maternal I think the name is just Jose Antonio, the next word is the
name of the place where he might be from, which I don't recognize.
Grandmother is Ana Ventura from the aldeia/village of Armamar

Thank you, Margaret, you just keep coming through for me. I really do
appreciate it and hope I can return the favor some day!

Hi Everyone
My ancestry is 100% Azorean but I have noticed that I have a significant
amount of matches to people with heavy amounts of British ancestry and that
show no evidence of Portuguese ancestry with regards to their surnames and
genealogies, some posting genealogies as far back as the
Thanks Cheri.;) I'm not real new to this list but I didn't know that.;) I

Edna,
Joao Ventura, the archivist that you met in Salt Lake, is NOT Joao C.

Sorry, I made a typo, Rita Rodrigues de Figueiredo is from São Cosmado, not
from São Romão.
As to José Antonio, you should look for his marriage in Armamar. I couldn´t
read the word after his name, so I'm not sure that Antonio in this case is
a patronymic.
Let me know if you find him in
That would be fantastic, Margaret, if we were related and to find some

found Tombo.pt really, really frustrating to use. The pages load very
slowly and navigating through them is torturous. Maybe it's because I'm

Cheri I have been picturing the archivist for all this time! Especially while
I've been reading the records on the Tombo.pt site.:) Thanks again for
clarifying for me.

Edna,
Think of Joao C. as Joao Computers. He does the computer stuff, like
builds a Web site to crawl the CCA site.

Nan Paul,
Locating your immigrant ancestor's place of birth is mostly a
do-it-yourself job. There's a 30+ page how to on the Azores GenWeb here:

You'll need to do all the U.S. (assuming you are U.S. and not someplace
else) sources. One of those things will turn up his
