Hi Eric Edgar,

Would you mind having a quick look for Trindade and Resendes, if it's not
too much trouble?

thanks!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Births of Merced County CA 1873-1912

2016-10-28 Thread linda
Thanks so much Rosemarie!

Agostinho and Margarida are my great-grandparents. I believe their first
child, Mary, was stillborn. My family was unaware of her existence, but in
the 1910 census, they reported one stillbirth. I'd found a probable birth
record for her on Ancestry, but the names were so badly transcribed that it
wasn't 100% certain. (as I recall-- don't have my notes to hand).

Emily was my grandmother's older sister. I have fond memories of her:
fierce, no nonsense, and bit intimidating--totally old school-- but a
doting blind eye for her ne'er do well youngest grandson.

Interestingly, my grandmother, Stella, is missing from these records.

Antone and Mary Trindade were my great grandfather's brother and his wife.
The Rhode Island connection is very interesting. I'll need to follow that
up. There's a family story about one of the Trindade sisters getting
married back east against her brother's wishes and then the brothers never
speaking to her again (Aunt Emily didn't come by her sharp side in a vacuum
;)

I think that Joe and Mary Trindade were another of the Brothers and their
wives, but I haven't yet sorted them all out; at the very least, he's a
cousin. There were scads of Trindade and Resendes siblings. Some came to
the US and stayed, some came and returned to the islands. At least one
came here and then dropped off the face of the earth; there's a family
story that Great Aunt Emily spoke sharply to her uncle Joao Resendes one
day, he took offense, left town and was never heard from or seen again.
Thin skins, good times :D (I scoured census records for clues to his
whereabouts, but no luck.)

thanks again! I'll follow up about getting copies of the book pages from
you-- perhaps on the day of the Roundup,

:)

[AZORES-Genealogy] New book in CCA: SMG-LG-AGUADEPAU-O-1822-1844

2016-10-28 Thread João Ventura
Hi everyone,

This morning, the tombo.pt site detected a "new" death records book, it's
from the Água de Pau parish in São Miguel, covering the years 1822 to 1844.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-LG-AGUADEPAU-O-1822-1844/SMG-LG-AGUADEPAU-O-1822-1844_item1/index.html

It's been a long time since they last had something new, so most of you
probably stopped looking at tombo.pt for any news out of CCA, which is why
I decided to come here and warn you.

Best regards,

João Ventura

 Hi
 Carmen,
 The
"expostos" records from S. Sebastiao, are sterile
and yield nothing other than a number, with many name
Antonios born in 1855 it's almost an impossibility.
However I came across one child named Antonio, who was
Perfilhado (legalized birth rights) in 1881.  The parents
are Manuel Carvalho de Sousa and Francisca Ludovina da
 Conceicao.
 Exposto
 # 724 - baptism/birth

 This may
not necessarily be the right person.  You will have to
collect all of this couple's children and pay special
attention to when the surname Carvalho comes up.  If after
1881 or close to it you may have found your
 GGP.

 It was
helpful, in discerning a timeline, thank you.

 From this I can
tell you the record you are looking at for Antonio given to
Umbelina is not your G. Grandfather.  Based on the marriage
record he was 21 years old, which brings the birth year
around 1855.  The Sao Pedro Antonio was born in
 1839,
 I was also
hoping to find in the marriage record the name of the care
giver or the exposto number but unfortunately the priest did
 not list it.
 I would
suggest for you to have a look at Matriz, Sao Sebastiao
index to see if there are any Antonio's born circa
 1855.
 Hope you find
 him.
 You should
collect all of the children born to this couple, along with
Goparents names.  You might find a connection to the people
that raised Antonio if it ends up being S.
 Sebastiao.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Genealogias S. Jorge - Translation Request

2016-10-28 Thread 'Jeremy B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Hello folks,
I have been researching one of my lines in Calheta on Sao Jorge, and unearthed
some interesting information in one of the manuscript genealogies. There is a
paragraph that appears to talk about the life of my ancestor, and his promotion
to second lieutenant, and his appointment the position of otary, and whatnot.
Cannot make out much of the content, as I do not speak Portuguese.

So, if anyone has the time, it would mean a tremendous deal to me to have a
translation of the paragraph on him.

[AZORES-Genealogy] How to Take a Family Tree DNA Test - Video with Portuguese subtitles

2016-10-28 Thread Cheri Mello
FTDNA ships worldwide. They ship to the Azores. They have the swabbing
instructions in Portuguese, however the shipping department does not look
at the label to see where the kit is going. So if you would like the
instructions in another language, you have to let FTDNA when you place the
order.

A video clip was made by another Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) administrator. He
had someone shoot a video a few years ago and upload it to You Tube. A link
to this video is in the Welcome Letter that people receive when they sign
up for the Azores DNA Project. It helps to see it, but it's still in
English.

So I emailed Brad, the admin, and asked if I could find someone to dub over
his voice in Portuguese. He told me that You Tube can provide subtitles in
multiple languages. We all know that the computer translations leave a bit
to be desired. Brad sent me his dialogue in English and I sent it to
Margaret Vicente and she put it in Portuguese.

https://goo.gl/54qrjt

1. From this video viewing page, click the CC icon (Subtitles / CC (closed
captions).
2. Click the gear icon and chose Subtitles.
3. Left click Auto-Translate. Note the Subtitles / CC (closed captions)
item.
4. Pick the language of your choice.
5. Restart the video from the beginning using the Play or Red time line
controls.

Mary, I definitely think it is Hilaria, not Maria ? It is very clear in the
