Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: NETTO Surname
I've never researched my Neto line, but I think it's an alcunha too.
I'd bet we're cousins too. My great-grandfather Manuel da Rosa was a miner in
Pike, Sierra County in the 1880's. There if my recall from memory is right (I
am at work right now) his marriage certificate by the judge lists Gracia as a
witness and later an infant (I'm guessing a twin) named
David,
The Netto/Neto surname undoubted got it's start as a nickname or alcunha.
Neto means grandson and would be appended to the real surname (example:
Manuel Silva Neto would be the grandson of Manuel Silva). The son of Manuel
Silva may have been known as Manuel Silva Filho (filho means son).
Hello David
All that has been said about the the Netto (Neto) is true.
However, In S. Miguel, according to Carlos Machado, the name dates back to at
least the mid 1500's as a surname in the person of Briolanja Netto, daughter of
the Joao Alves Netto, juiz do mar in Angra at the time of her
David and group,
I check my database on Portuguese Names and Their Meaning and found
the following on the name Neto and Netto.
I hope this helps
