Just found a family line from Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande. I have their
childrens records, this death record and STILL cannot figure out Barbara
Soares' husbands name. It looks like it starts with the letter 'L' in all
the records and last name is Rodrigues or Rois. Can someone please help
with this writing? Maybe I've been away from doing my geneology work too
long. Thanks in advance

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Steamship Peninsular

2017-11-03 Thread Cheri Mello
Deb,

There are 2 lists: the outbound from the Azores (emigration) and inbound to
the U.S. (immigration).

The outbound, called the "Passaportes" are on the CCA that you cited above.
Use Tombo.pt to access them (click on the British flag is you need
English): http://tombo.pt/d/acores

The inbound, part of the American arrival records, are acessible through
Ancestry, NARA, or your local FHC. They had to account for passengers who
died on the voyage. I think they are listed at the end of the manifest. I
believe a couple of people on this list have found deceased individuals.

Good luck! Cheri Mello

[AZORES-Genealogy] Steamship Peninsular

2017-11-03 Thread 'Deborah Arlett' via Azores Genealogy
Does anyone know where I may find the manafest for this ship during the 1895
storm? I have looked in a lot of places. My great grandfather, João Correia
Moniz, native of Ponta Delgada, baptized in São Sebastio, São Miguel,
supposedly died on this ship in that year and the storm seems like the most
likely place of his demise. I am not sure of the year of his birth and still
looking through the culturacores.azores.gov.pt website. If I find his baptism
record It may have more details on his death added to the left column. I am
hoping so anyway!
The steamship was a passenger ship that travelled to Lisbon, Cadiz and the U.S.
In 1895, it was commissioned by the Portuguese government for a special
campaign in Africa and delivered troops to Mozambique. It ran into trouble and
lost all control on the return trip. He was married to Maria Aurora
Bettencourt, native of Feteira, Faial. They were married in 1886 or so and had
2 daughters. My grandmother was born in 1894 and he died shortly after. One
of Maria’s relatives, and we are still unsure of how he was related, Jośe
Antonio Bettencourt, was the captain of Peninsular. There is a picture of him
and family in the Dabney house musuem in Horta, Faial. The ship was built in
1888, so he was likely the captain during that storm. We also believe João got
work on the ship because of the relation to his wife. There are still so many
questions but right now my search is for João and if he died on that ship!
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Deb
