Tony, I have a book about women and children's clothing and from the
pictures used, I would say 1879--1882 time frame.
For those interested, the book is called *Victorian Fshions for ...* by
Linda Setnik. Some really nice pictures used for the examples.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Persistence pays off

2017-12-23 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
My project of compiling marriages from Santissimo Salvador is progressing I
am now up to 1902 with 3 more years to go.

Because I am entering the information into a genealogy program it is taking
more time than I originally anticipated. I started working on this project
20 years ago.

Things take time and I try to be accurate. Yesterday I was entering a
marriage. The bride was Maria Julia Cabral. Her parents were Francisco
Cabral de Mello and Maria Jose Pacheco. I found her parents easily in my
data base and proceeded to add her.

When I looked at her age I computed her birth date as born before 7 Jul
1881. But wait I already had a sister Maria da Conceicao with a birth date
of 20 March 1881. Something is wrong here I have two Marias with birthdates
in the same gestation period.

I recheck both marriages and the Parents names are exactly the same I spend
the next several hours looking for the birth of another Maria including
checking names in other girls born in the time. The only thing I learned is
that the birth record of Maria da Conceicao said first of the name. So if
the parents had another Maria the birthdate would be after the first Maria
in other words, start looking 9 months after 20 March 1881. But the problem
is Maria Julia Cabral age on her marriage date of 7 July 1902 is 21. I came
to the conclusion that one of these Marias had the wrong parents names
entered in the records. The question is which one and who were the other set
of parents.

The solution I employed was to look for births of children from the two
Marias and see if the grandparents names were the same or different.

I started with Maria Julia Cabral. A year and a half after her marriage she
had a son and the grand parents were the same as her parents in her marriage
record. Also the sons name was Simao the same name as a brother with her
parent's names.

Next I looked after the marriage of Maria da Conceicao and about a year
after her marriage she had a son. Her parents names were given as Francisco
Cabral and Maria de Jesus Silva as compared to Maria Julia Cabral parents
names of Francisco Cabral de Mello and Maria Jose Pacheco.

To tie this all up I looked for the baptism of Maria da Conceicao with these
new parents names and found a record on 19 Apr 1880 with the parent's names
of Francisco Cabral and Maria de Jesus. Her maternal grandfather's name was
Manual da Silva. The icing on this cake was a margin note giving information
on her marriage with her husband down to the date and record number. Case
solved. Names were close but the families were different. The birth date I
had for Maria da Conceicao was actually the on for Maria Julia Cabral The
error in the marriage records was the priest wrote the wrong parents names
for Maria da Conceicao.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help in dating of photograph sought

2017-12-23 Thread linda
I'd say late 19th century. It looks like a classic photo studio portrait. I
can generally date these pictures to within a decade (e.g., "1890's") by hair,
dress and shoe styles. But those traits in this picture aren't familiar to me.
That leads me to suspect the photo was not taken in the US, and I'd further
guess the family had means.

How'd I do? :)

What kind of photo is it, and what size? That info can help with dating too.

Cameron,
Have you searched the Uminho site for Pico for record of Manuel
birth/baptism? You have the parental names so to search each village
doesn't take that long and you can search in English. ghp.ics.uminho.pt,
then click on genealogies (left on ribbon) then click on each village
one-by-one to search for Manuel.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for records of an individual and parents

2017-12-23 Thread Cameron Hazer
Hi,

So, I know many people here have developed their own databases from
researching documents and wanted to know if anyone could search their own
database for this family:

Manuel Souza + Isabelle Garcia (parents)

Manuel Souza Garcia (child)

The son was born on Pico, and I'm assuming the same would be true of the
parents. He was born somewhere between 1888 and 1892 based on the records
I've looked at. I have no info on the parents aside from names, which I
acquired from a marriage certificate for the son. Don't know of any
siblings.

This is of course just a request if it's not too much trouble. I'm manually
going through baptisms myself, but that can be incredibly time consuming
when looking for parents and so on. I couldn't find them on the ghp.ics
site with the family indices.

Thanks!
