Priscilla, yes it’s not a common name, but I did find it in the some legal
records. Now we have another piece of the puzzle and have another name to
search for! Can you estimate what Manuel’s dob would be? Fernando

Yes, he’s from there but I can’t say if he was born there.

Priscilla,
JR posted that he thinks the Antonio that I’m referring to is the son of Manuel
Raleza Soares (your great-great grandfather). I’m on the Azores DNA list,
however I’m not related to Antonio, only his wife (my great aunt). I’m trying
to get in touch with their descendants but no luck
Thanks for the information. I will contact them and see if they can retrieve a
copy of the record.

Thanks for the links, I searched for Raleza and it has. A file that includes
Antonio and Hortencia. How do I access these files, what info should I expect
etc. Can you give me a brief explanation of what the archives hold. I’ve only
used the CCA.

Yes I thought about that, but in this case I think the last name is Raleza.

My great aunt Hortencia Luis Pimentel (1921-2015) married Antonio Soares
Raleza. I’m pretty certain they had a couple sons and daughters but my family
has no other info. I was wondering if anyone knows of this family? The last
name (Raleza) is unique I think. My aunt is from Vila Franca, SM,
Richard, a little off topic, but are you a descendant of Manuel Luis Pimentel?

I found Marianna’s birth record. She was born on 7 Apr 1725. I just didn’t go
back far enough so a big thanks for her parents marriage record. The records
for Francisco and Iria births are not available. So I went on to Bartholomeu
Barbosa and Maria Sousa and I found one record so far for their
I didn’t have Iria’s death record, thanks! I also descend from Manuel Sousa, it
would be great to compare notes for that couple as well. I’ll try to post
something tomorrow.

Ok I’ll look into that. Perhaps there are two Bartolomeu Barbosa and Maria de
Sousa marriage records during that time? One Barbosa and one pedreiro.

Cheri, no problem, I’m sure I have a few duplicates on my tree as well. You
mentioned you were related to Francisco’s brother. His brother Manuel is also
an ancestor of mine, who is the brother in your family?

Ok here is what I have for Bartholomeu

Thanks for checking. I looked for her birth record in Matriz but couldn’t find
it so I thought maybe there was more info in the marriage record.

I’m trying to find Marianna’s place of birth. I think it’s Matriz, but not 100%
sure. Can someone transcribe the last part of this record that has her parents
and church.
Thanks Fernando
That’s great! Thanks for the marriage record. I agree the key is Iria as it’s
not a very common name. I will search for Marianna’s with a Francisco
regardless of last name and Iria. Yes, please let me know if you have this
lineage in your tree, that would be awesome.

I’m searching for information on Francisco da Souza and Iria de Mello and their
daughter Marianna do Corpo Santo de Mello. Marianna married Joao da Costa on
May 18, 1755 in Vila Franca, Sao Miguel (Matriz). On her marriage records it
says she is from (or baptized in?) Matriz, but I can’t find
Sorry, the left side, Marianna de Mello

Al, you mention that you found some books on Santa Maria and Sao Miguel. Can
you tell us what those were?
Thanks Fernando

Can someone help and tell me where Margarida’s parents are from? The link is
below and her parents are Miguel Paiva and Isabel Furtada (right page, middle).
I think it says Maia, Ribeira ??.
Thanks for the clarification. Maia is from Ribeira Grande and I think that
municipality has a Ribeira Seca as well. So I wasn’t sure what church they were
referring too. I thought it was odd it said this village of Maia, when the
record is from the Vila Franca municipality? JR, how did you find
You guys are amazing. Thanks for the help! I see now that the mai threw me off
as it looks like a capital ‘m’ so I thought Maia, and Ponta is in lower case
and Garca is hard to see. Again thanks as I spent hours searching Matriz and
Maia!
