I wasn't trying to discourage you, I know how hard it is to research when no
one knows the person you're researching. Asking a lot of good questions in the
wrong places can have the effect of wearing down the most enthusiastic
researcher. You don't want that to happen.

On the New Bedford Whaling site there is a John Harris sailed on the Janus
II 1854 and it says residence Portugal. Could this be him?
I would help to have his birth year.

Thank you, Dano. I've recovered from feeling discouraged, and back to
feeling determined. I'm following all the leads the wonderful
people--yourself included--have given me. My latest find is just a penciled
note on the inside front cover of a church dedication pamphlet:
Harris-Meadow. I have
I can hardly believe it. The birth date is close to what I had thought.
What little I have shows his birthdate as 1857, 1858, and 1860, but 1848 is
so close. The other exciting thing is that family lore has him as a whaler.

Hi Dano--All great questions. I wish I had great answers. He did live in
Boston and was a cabinetmaker. I found a marriage certificate, but the only
information that gave me was that he was born on St. Jorge, the Western
Islands. I'll keep at it. I'm determined! Thanks for all your advice.
