Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Catholic Church Records

2017-06-12 Thread Joanne Mercier
Since I work with Catholic Church records on a daily basis as part of my
day job, let me just state that the sacramental records we keep are both
public and private. They are private because they were created to record
sacramental events and the personal information contained in them was
entrusted to the church by the families involved. However, they are also
public because they will stand up in civil law situations as valid proof of
one’s identity. They are the property of the parishes that store them and
it in this country it seems to vary from diocese to diocese (and parish to
parish in dioceses with no instructions) as to how genealogical research is
or is not conducted. The only edict that has come down from the "home
office" in Rome is in regards to the LDS Church no longer being permitting
to microfilm the registers and that was in 2008. Some dioceses have
extended that to closing all their records to everyone which is
unfortunate.

I’m totally encouraged that some dioceses are digitizing and allowing their
early, historical records to be published online. It is a painstaking
process and will take some time to complete but will be very valuable in
the long run. But I can understand the frustration of the parish
secretaries who get more requests for records than they can handle as they
try to, in many cases, run the day-to-day operations of a parish on an
increasingly part-time basis. Offering them “a little something for their
troubles” really doesn’t help the situation either - they want to help
folks out but once you do it for one or two the word gets out and they are
overrun with inquiries. I applaud dioceses who have created processes for
genealogists to go through the central archives to do the research, even if
it costs a little up front. If anyone wants to know if their diocese does
that let me know and I’ll check my sources for the information.

And if I can help in any way with understanding these records just let me
know. I’m happy to help where I can.

there is some great news! There will be over 100 Million *Catholi*c *Church

months!! The Archdiocese if Philadelphia is already up and searchable with
New York & Baltimore to follow. The Archdiocese of Boston is already being
digitized and will be on www.americanancestors.org which is managed by the
New England Genealogical & Historical Soc. Hopefully other Archdioceses in
the USA will follow suit. They will also be digitizing records from Ireland
& England! This is a great thing for all genealogists.

Many of these records and indexes will be free to search and other will be
available only from the premium search site. The LDS Church has access to
www.findmypast.com but it is the institutional version so the article
doesn't say if the indexes and records will be made available that way.

Keep your eyes open for further news on these records!

saw all of these Portuguese names and wanted to copy them all! I only had
my camera and not a phone that took pics so didn't get any good pics. I
just kept thinking, "boy if only we had permission to copy all of these!".
Oh well, may in our lifetime, as more and more records are becoming

Years ago you used to be able to make an appointment and go to the San
Francisco Arch Diocese's archives, in Menlo Park where you could pour through
their microfilm to your heart's content.

Unfortunately, they changed that rule. I'm hoping they change it once again.
But, I'm not holding my breath till I see a notification.

I know Philadelphia is very low on funding, and most of their immigrants
were non Catholics esp during war times.
Also, Boston New England Historical Society is really helpful if and when
you have any questions.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Catholic Church Records

2010-11-18 Thread Joanne Mercier
Hi Shirl,
I'm going away for a few days so let me give you a few more pieces of info from
the top of my head that may click with what you've told me so far:
1) the Polish parish in Warren was St. Casmir and it has closed, however, its
files have to be kept at another church in the area so I'll look that up when I
return. Since your Mom's folks were from Austria they may have gone there. The
Portuguese parish is St. Thomas and they are still open. The church with the
cemetery is St. Alexander's (Italian) and they should have the records for it.

2) I am familiar with the last name of Kozik since there is a priest in the
Diocese of Fall River (MA) by that name and I believe he may be half
portuguese. His name is Fr. Thomas Kocik, is stationed at Santo Christo parish
in Fall River and might be someone of interest for you.

When I return I'll look up where the files for St. Casmir's are if you are
interested. Hope this helps for now.

I found these on FHC which you may/may not already have. Don't you
love the different name spellings? Also, Sebastian's naturalization
info is on Ancestry and if you would like the info let me know. With
this you should be able to order his naturalization record which might
list exactly where he and Lucya came from.

Shirl,
I work in the Diocese of Providence and may be able to give you some tips on
how to ask nicely for the info you're looking for. What church in Warren, RI
are you trying to contact? Is it St. Thomas the Apostle? They are the
official Portuguese National Church in town. Let me know if I can be of any
help.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Catholic Church Records

2010-11-17 Thread bellemarco

Shirl,

Sebastian Kozik and Lucya Paruch had these 2 children:

John born 11/7/1898 Warren
Joseph born 12/17/1900 b. Warren
Lucya died June 9, 1936 Warren

When I went looking for my brother and sister who died and were buried in
MA before I was born, without stones as my parents could not afford it at
the time, I went to the cemetery office. They gave me the location and
number of where they were buried. Some children had stones and using those
as a point, my husband said that there should be a cement marker with a
number, which was buried by dirt and grass. He took his pocket knife and
poked and poked until we found these buried numbered markers. With that
information and about 75 years later my siblings and I had stones put on
their graves...and if you believe it or not, we even had to pay the burial
cost for our brother, luckily in those days the cost was minimal, before we
could have the stone placed.

Unfortunately I am currently having problems with Ancestry, something to do
with google toolbar?, so I cannot access records there. I did find a
Sebastian Kozuk(sp) 17, b. Austria, on the ship Spaarndan into NY 7/24/1893.

I don't know what you do/do not have on the family thus far so let me know
if there is something specific you are looking for.
