Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Baptism word from Ribeira das Tainhas on Sao Miguel

2016-09-21 Thread Cheri Mello
JR,
It's a story. I started stirring the pot in West Warwick, Rhode Island,
trying to clear up some of the collateral family lines. A guy whom I've
been trying to connect with for years, sent me an obituary of a cousin from
West Warwick, asking who it was. I did the lineage of the man in the
obituary years ago when he was alive. Found out that I never put it in the
computer though. So it's on paper somewhere.

I had his dad, "Frank" in my computer (Francisco de Mello Barboza in the
Azores and Frank Mello here). I didn't have his wife Anna or Annie
Rei/Ray/Rey. So I went off recreating the line and that's when I found the
baptism of their oldest son. I vaguely remember something about Connecticut
from this line. When I put it into my computer, Frank would have been about
23 at marriage, and Annie would have been about 14 or 15!! Yikes! That
generally doesn't happen on my Portuguese lines.

1925 Rhode Island State census says she was born c. 1887 and was about 17
when son Frank Jr (kid #2 was born). 1915 Rhode Island State census she was
born c. 1885 and was about 15 when the eldest, Manuel, was born. 1930 U.S.
Federal, she was born c. 1885 and states she married at age 16 (Frank says
married at age 23). She was about 18 when Frank Jr was born (the eldest,
Manuel, is not in the household). At first, it didn't make sense since they
seem to be around West Warwick, but if she was underage, maybe they went to
another state where no one knew them to get married.

I don't recall if I did the work on Anna/Annie all those years ago. I was
trying to verify the family story about being related to Jim Mello, the
Notre Dame football player. My dad said that he and his grandfather were
watching or listening to the Notre Dame football games during the 1940s.
When Jim Mello made a play, my dad was told that the play was made by his
cousin! (Jim Mello & Manuel Mello, my dad's grandfather, were 2nd cousins).
I went to verify the story in the 1990s (BC - Before Computers) and went to
my public library, looked up the Notre Dame Alumni Association, and wrote
them a letter, asking to be put into contact with my cousin Jim. They
mailed him my letter and he called me. He gave me the information on his
parents, Frank/Francisco Mello and Anna/Annie Ray, and I went to my FHC and
pulled the film working on the Mello line and found they came off my Mello
Barboza line.

Yeah, those Furtado Rei and Laurencia/Laurencio lines are going to drive me
crazy! No direct relation, but I guess my family liked theirs. Their
offspring married each other. They were probably godparents to each others
kids too!

I have Anna born on the 7 Oct 1884 RdTThe "g" from freguesia is
crashing down into the date, but I'm pretty sure I'm seeing sete:

This couple married in USA, 1899, or so? I think I I have this Anna Rosario
Furtado connection. It's the same line as Lilian Palko. However, I think
there may some mix-up, because there is a Furtado Lourenco line and a
Lourencia line. Both intertwine but are also separate. My records show Anna

Is this what you have?

Which Catholic church in Stonington would they have used? Anyone know?
