Just came across this video:

Midway through this video (@ 1m40s), it fairly clearly implies there might
actually be a proper magnetic compass in the G1 after all. The guys says
you can spin around on the spot to rotate the Google Street View
viewpoint. Thats rather nifty :-)

Projector tables and blob tracking were a staple on the electronic art
circuit from the early 1990s, it's taken a long time for this to seep
back to centres of "innovation" like Microsoft. ;-)

I'd guess that under-projected desk-size multitouch screens like the
one Jeff Han became famous with at TED Talsk 2006(?) would complement
an over-head high res camera for 'scanning' better, so that shadows
don't annoy (and the pointing doesn't seem very accurate in the first

These aren't as discrete as you suggest; ie, the M in WIMP is an input
method, the WI&P are UIs.

And the UIs of these phones don't seem very WIMPish to me:
Touchscreens collapse the separation between the Mouse and Pointer,
and the screen size of mobile computers is small which means
overlapping Windowing doesn't work well. Thus the visual dominance of
the icons in the iPhone OS UI, and the invisibility of the majority of
the modes of interaction.

> 1980s and have expired."

Sure, none of the individual parts - fast CPU, big RAM, solid state
disk, 3D graphics chip, high res color display okay in sunlight, touch
screen input, long battery life, wireless, GPS, gyroscope, and pocket
size form factor for all - are new this decade by a long shot, and I
have a sense that the fastest rate of computer hardware innovation was
in the 70s.

But the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and the price drop
is staggering.

> Perhaps this just proves Android=mashup OS?

AIUI the iPhone has the mashup OS, because the only way to program it
seriously is with webapps. However, Android (if it isn't fettered) and
OpenMoko (which has protection against fettering via GPL) provide
access to the hardware so developers can really program these devices.

Over on the Free Software Business mailing list recently, Tom Lord
paraphrased Eben Moglen's outline of the strategy of GPLv3:

"The strategy: engage in diplomacy with [cloud computing
vendors] and push as hard as you can on all forms of
truly personal computing in software freedom.

Rationale: In 10 years, the number of people with access
to personal computing hardware is going to skyrocket relative
even to today's numbers. That is where the main action [is].
In 10 years, the ad-broker model will have broken when
the price-bubble on ads bursts and also when users get fed
up with the privatized secret police starting to emerge out
of the muck -- and given all of that available *personal*
computing, the [software freedom] community will have
ample room to work around those scary services."

(IMO a nice thread if you have time, btw)

In contrast it seems most people are planning for the core of the
network to continue outpacing the periphery. I'm not sure, because it
seems likely that portable computing will follow the same price-power
curve that desktop computing did. Plus, I agree with Moglen/Lord that
there will be several large privacy disasters - of the kind that we in
the UK are most familiar with thanks to our data-greedy yet
incompetent state.

Together this will put people off centralised cloud computing and on
to personal cloud computing.

Skip ahead to 3 minutes 30 seconds or so. Unlike current multitouch things,

(ever since seeing this, I've only ever gotten desks with white surfaces, to

I'm unclear, but I suspect that the Android Marketplace having very
different policies from the Apple App store will become a differentiator.
Essentially, a number of developers are coming to the conclusion that
it is risky to develop commercial apps for the iPhone essentially due to
gatekeeper issues.

(Google aren't in competition with those developing for the platform)

Some people are so boggled by what's happening with the iPhone that it's
resulted in things like this:
   * http://www.joyoftech.com/joyoftech/joyarchives/1151.html

The effect I suspect, unless Apple change their minds, will be a shift of
developers to the Gphone - a bit like what happened when the BBC bought
H2G2, coinciding with wikipedia being founded...

As yet, as far as I can see, it is a phone for geeks alone. However, I
suspect that this could well be the initial intention as the early
adopters will also be those most likely to develop for the platform, and
the wodge of cash being offered in competitions (if my memories of Open
Tech aren't as hazy as I think they are) can only help. Once you've got
your geeky posse, and the occasional company understanding that this is
happening, on board, the applications flow, the platform becomes useful
and the non-geeks come running to get their nice, free, open apps that
don't come through the iTunes store. Maybe.

All of it without much effort from google to actually build the
killer-apps.

I would say that the whole point of the G1 is that is IS a geeks phone.
We need a real platform to develop on, one with keyboard, pointer, GPS,
compass, 3G and all the gubbins.

Once we have got our hands on one, we can get the killer apps together!

Indeed. Perhaps I overestimated Google's desire to have mass adoption.
Maybe they're playing safe til they have a solid platform - I know my
opinion of Apple has been dented by buggy 2.0 software and
questionable app acceptance practices.

Don't get me wrong for backstage and the community of developers,

As Jim Tonge pointed out its all about marketing and google are not

Anyway we'll find out real soon. I'm looking forward to dual booting

Sorry, a "GPS compass". I worked on GPS for ages back in the day and don't

Not really sure what is so complicated about "electronic compasses" though,
I would love to hear more.

I was really looking forward to doing my little app to help find your

I'm not sure this is in context, just couldn't resist sharing..

"The problem is not simply that IT people are disgruntled. The problem is
that geeks in general are one culture and suits are a different culture.
They're like oil and water. They have completely different ideas about what
should be going on. The whole situation is loaded with lack of respect and
lack of trust on both sides. ...

"I don't think techies ever doubted they had the keys to car. Now the suits

fully aware of the Y2K problem, but they were content to sit back and wait
for it to all go to hell. Watching a suit go down in flames is entertainment
for geeks."

RE: [backstage] Android UK launch set for Tuesday

2008-09-23 Thread Ian Forrester
>From that article,

"It's just very exciting for me as a computer geek to have a phone I can play
with and modify."

See this is what I mean.

Don't get me wrong for backstage and the community of developers, geeks,
hackers, etc. Its going to be great to have a phone which is open enough to
modify and change but for "consumers" what's the big deal?

As Jim Tonge pointed out its all about marketing and google are not doing that.

Anyway we'll find out real soon. I'm looking forward to dual booting my HTC
phone real soon.

Ian,

the gPhone has both GPS and a compass, I can think of loads of
applications for that.

But I'm worried now, Jemima Kiss has twittered "So apparently G1 is a
dog's dinner. I'll reserve judgement until I get my hands on one."

PS: Loved the mixtape presentation on your website.

I'm totally ignorant, but I hadn't seen a WinMo do anything like the
gPhone/iPhone's animated UI.

(Apple doesn't even allow the public to see the API for its canvas, because
iPhone apps are webapps, but Google has made Skia free software; Skia is the
high performance canvas library that doesn't require a 3D graphics chip, that
makes all the iPhone-style bouncy UI animation fly)

Cheers,
Dave

Seems you can register...

http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-phones/t-mobileg1-whats-hot/

At the press conference they said the phones would be in the UK in the first
week of November, and 2009 Q1 for the rest of Europe.

I'm wondering who told JK that... Apple's PR?

the gPhone has both GPS and a compass, I can think of loads of applications
for that.

But I'm worried now, Jemima Kiss has twittered "So apparently G1 is a dog's

Ok, I see what you mean.

Although:

- Web n Walk (it's on T-Mobile, right?) is £5 a month for "unlimited"
internet.

- Google is a brand non-geeks trust - if they market it with Google
search, Gmail, YouTube and Maps they're laughing. As Apple rightly
surmised, people do want the lighter side of geek functionality, just
not the headache of getting it to work.

I think most phones can do what the iPhone does anyway - they just
make it so difficult people don't bother. My sister wanted an iPhone
on the strength of its Facebook webapp alone, until I pointed out she
could have similar access with her 3G-enabled Sony Ericsson and Opera
mini.

I guess my point is that it's down to how well it works and how well
they market it, natch.

I'm totally ignorant, but I hadn't seen a WinMo do anything like the
gPhone/iPhone's animated UI.

(Apple doesn't even allow the public to see the API for its canvas,
because iPhone apps are webapps, but Google has made Skia free
software; Skia is the high performance canvas library that doesn't
require a 3D graphics chip, that makes all the iPhone-style bouncy UI
animation fly)

Cheers,
Dave

well with WinMo (but several geeks who love it). Anecdotal experience, I know,
