[Bacula-users] Bacula and Dell Powervault 124T

2011-08-02 Thread lokinc
Ok, so i've got it working now, but I run into 1 problem. When I run this:
# btape /dev/nst0
Tape block granularity is 1024 bytes.
btape: butil.c:285 Using device: "/dev/nst0" for writing.
03-Aug 10:49 btape JobId 0: 3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command.
03-Aug 10:49 btape JobId 0: 3302 Autochanger "loaded? drive 0", result: nothing
loaded.
03-Aug 10:49 btape: Fatal Error at device.c:298 because:
dev open failed: dev.c:491 Unable to open device "LTO5" (/dev/nst0): ERR=No
medium found

I know this is because there is not tape in there. I thought it would run
without it.

If the tape is in the drive I run into the problem where it wants to test the
autochanger. Then I tell it yes and I get this:

=== End Forward space files test ===

Ah, I see you have an autochanger configured.
To test the autochanger you must have a blank tape
 that I can write on in Slot 1.

Do you wish to continue with the Autochanger test? (y/n): y

=== Autochanger test ===

3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded" command.
Nothing loaded in the drive. OK.
3303 Issuing autochanger "load 1 0" command.

It just sits there doing nothing, I guess it is supposed to remove the tape
from the drive and put the tape from slot 1 into the drive but that doesn't
seem to happen

[Bacula-users] clarification on purging and File volume retention

2011-08-02 Thread scar
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

i'm not using tapes, i just have my volumes stored in a directory. it's
my intention to take a full backup every month on the first, with
incrementals and differentials during the month like in the default
configuration. with a volume use duration of 23 hours, a new volume
will get created every day. so, it seemed reasonable to me to have the
volume retention set to 40 days. with AutoPrune and Recycle both set to
yes, this seemed like a maximum of 40 volumes would be created and used,
thus limiting the amount of disk space the backups would use.

but then i started reading the other settings for the Pool resource, and
confusion ensued.

in there, it indicates the minimum volume retention should be twice the
interval of my full backups, i.e. two months. anyone care to explain
that? it seems to me with a 40 day limit, at least 2 full backups will
always exist.

secondly, it goes on to say that i should be using `Action On Purge =
Truncate` along with a RunScript in my CatalogBackup Job to run `purge
volume action=all allpools storage=File`. when i went to read up on the
`purge volume` command, it seems to me that the command should really be
`purge volume action=*truncate* allpools storage=File`.

finally, i then went on to read about the "Recycle Oldest Volume"
directive which sounds reasonable, but i'm confused as to what is really
happening without this directive set to yes.

is all of this really necessary? thanks

here's my Pool resource currently,

Pool {
  Name = File
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 40 days
  Maximum Volume Bytes = 100G
  Maximum Volumes = 100
  LabelFormat = "Vol"
  Volume Use Duration = 23h
}

Volumes will be recycled only if there are no jobs remaining on them.
For job and files, I don't know if we've got the same case.

[Bacula-users] Restore error with 10 GbE server and 1 GbE client

2011-08-02 Thread Cejka Rudolf
Hello,
  is there anybody else, who has experienced similar restore problem as me?
If I use bacula server --(10 GbE)--> switch --(1 GbE)--> bacula client,
big restores with many small files (for example, 10 million files in
500 GB) end after a while with the following error (small restores under
10 thousand files are always good):

...
02-Aug 13:12 backup-sd JobId 62258: Error: bsock.c:393 Write error sending
130568 bytes to client:IP:36643: ERR=Invalid argument
02-Aug 13:12 backup-sd JobId 62258: Fatal error: read.c:137 Error sending to
File daemon. ERR=Invalid argument
02-Aug 13:12 backup-sd JobId 62258: Error: bsock.c:339 Socket has errors=1 on
call to client:IP:36643
...

If I change bacula server connection from 10 GbE to just 1 GbE, all restores
go well. I think that it is related to data bursting, 10 GbE -> 1 GbE overload
and network buffers in operating system and in switch, TCP error reporting and
supposed bigger sensitivity of bacula to network errors.

Bacula server is FreeBSD 8.2-STABLE (Jul 30), network interfaces ix0 or em0.

[Bacula-users] Bacula Conference

2011-08-02 Thread Kern Sibbald
Hello,

Last year the Bacula "Developers" conference was a big success, so much so
that we are holding it again, but now it is known as the Bacula
Conference because
we think everyone should be invited.

I'm pleased to announce take place on Wednesday September 21st 2011 in
Cologne Germany.
So, please mark your calendars, and please do sign up for it, which you
can do by going to
the following link:

www.bacula-konferenz.de

If you would like to submit a paper, there is still one slot free.

Obviously I'll be there too and will discuss the Bacula roadmap as
I see it -- however, due to some nice unexpected user code
submissions, the roadmap does not always work out as I expect :-) .

I am looking forward to being there and to meeting you there too.

Best regards,

Kern

That looks correct to me. Did you reload the configuration in the director?

Did it back up anything at all? E.g. use estimate job=... listing level=full.

Which version of Windows is the client using?

[Bacula-users] Files, jobs and volumes retention

2011-08-02 Thread Bacula-Dev
Dear all,

I need a more clear explanation on bacula retentions.

Here's an example of what I would like to define on my director

Pool {
  Name = Full
  Pool Type = Backup

  Volume Retention = 2 weeks
}

JobDefs {

  Job Retention = 4 weeks
  File Retention = 6 months

}

and so on

Assuming that I scheduled an incremental job every day and at the end of the
month (eg. last Saturday), I scheduled a full backup of my client.
What about my previous full backup if I defined the job retention to 4 weeks
(should be 2 months - 1 day).

If the volume retention is applied without taking care of the Job retention,
I'll not be able to restore an incremental job without the previous full
(that has been deleted by the volume retention).

Am I right ?

Thanks for your feedback.

[Bacula-users] Resetting/truncating table File?

2011-08-02 Thread Richard Hartmann
Hi all,

our Bacula director (Bacula v3) has a corrupt File table. We tried
repairing it but to no avail. Backups do exist, but we were wondering
if there is a safe way to simply truncate the File table, throwing all
legacy information away. I am aware that this would mean a full backup
instead of incremental so this is, in part, a theoretical question
more than anything else.

Still: Is there a way to cleanly wipe the File table?

If we decide to wipe it after all, we would obviously read in the
current set of backups once again to make sure only incremental
backups would be made, not full ones of everything.

THanks,
Richard

[Bacula-users] One SD two subnets

2011-08-02 Thread Simone Martina
Goodevening,
I got a little problem: I have a bacula director on a server with two
NIC interfaces, each of one got a different subnet: 172.20.60.0/24 and
172.20.61.0/24 and I could only use a single LTO-4 tape reader.
Now, the problem is howto configure storage section in director
configuration file, because the differnt client (from the two nets)
should receive two different IP to contact SD.

Now I have tried this storage config:
Storage {
  Name = TAPECORP
  Address = 172.20.60.1
  SDPort = 9103
  Password = "foobar1"
  Device = TAPE
  Media Type = LTO-4
  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20
}

Storage {
  Name = TAPECUST
  Address = 172.20.61.1
  SDPort = 9103
  Password = "foobar2"
  Device = TAPE
  Media Type = LTO-4
  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20
}

172.20.60.1 and 172.20.61.1 are, respectively, the IPs of BaculaDIR/SD
for each net (DIR and SD are located onto the same physical server).

Is it the right way to configure it?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions,

Simone

Martin, thanks for the follow up. I did change the configuration without
success.
Do you might have any other idea? Is my understanding of the lines correct?

FileSet {
  Name = "ClientWindows"
  Include {

   File = "C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen" <- INCLUDE ALL OTHER SUBFOLDERS

 Options {
  signature = MD5
  compression = GZIP
  IgnoreCase = yes

 WildDir = "C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/*/Desktop" <--- INCLUDE
DESKTOP FROM EVERY USER
 WildDir = "C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/*/Eigene Dateien" <--
INCLUDE EIGENE DATEIEN FROM EVERY USER

  #Alle Benutzerverzeichnise mit einbeziehen.
  RegExDir="^C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/[^/]+$" < Copy Past
from the manuell - no idea

  #Alle Benutzer Desktop Verzeichnise und Unterverzeichnise
  Wild = "C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/*/Desktop/*" <--
INCLUDE ALL FILES FROM DESKTOP

  #Alle Benutzer Eigene Dateien und Unterverzeichnise
  Wild = "C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/*/Eigene Dateien/*"
<- INCLUDE ALL FILES FROM EIGENE DATEIEN
}
 Options {
Exclude = yes
IgnoreCase = yes
Wild= "C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/*" <-
EXCLUDE EVERYTHING ELSE
}
  }
}

I hadn't gotten that far yet. Does the 5.1.0 bacula-web work with 5.0.2
bacula?

I think you need to add the Desktop and Eigene Dateien directories themselves.

I.e. add this to the first options clause like in the manual:

WildDir = "C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/*/Desktop"
WildDir = "C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/*/Eigene Dateien"

Those are minimum specifications - but noone has (yet) produced a drive

Re: [Bacula-users] removing indexes on File table

2011-08-02 Thread Gavin McCullagh
Hi,

It seems unlikely that adding an index would noticeably improve backup
performance, as that is mostly an INSERT/UPDATE heavy procedure (with the
possible exception of accurate backups) and indexes generally slow those
jobs down.

A full backup job is made up of a few different steps. In the main, it's
"sending the data from FD to SD" followed by "adding all of the metadata to
the catalog". If you can work out how long each part takes (maybe look at
the timestamp on the volume if it's a file volume), you may be able to
better see which is the slow bit. Optimising the database won't help if
the time is all spent on sending data.

It might help to create a test job with a smaller fileset which takes a
short time but gives the same rate so you can test quickly.

It sounds like the rate you're getting overall is about 37Mbit/sec. A
few things to check.

 - Disk access -- is there anything preventing the FD from serving the data
   faster than this. Fragmented filesystem, slow disks, low on memory, ...
   An incremental or differential is a bit complex, but you say it's a full
   backup, so it should be able to pull the data reasonably quickly.

 - Check the CPU load, I/O load, memory usage and network bandwidth during
   a backup on the FD and SD.

 - Software compression or encryption -- if you have either on, the FD's
   cpu might become a bottleneck. Try turning them off as an experiment.

 - Network bandwidth -- use iperf to test a TCP connection from FD->SD and
   make sure the network is capable of taking the speed you expect. Is the
   entire network path 100Mbit/sec full duplex or better? Is it busy?

I wouldn't have expected that adding an index would ever slow down a query,
but it seems that with MySQL this isn't always the case and it's clear here
that the select query is faster with those indexes removed. Bacula does
seem to be better optimised for Postgresql.

It would be worthwhile to check that your database has been tuned at least
away from the bare defaults. In the case of MySQL, you can use this:

http://mysqltuner.pl/mysqltuner.pl

the key_buffer seems to be one of the most important parameters.

There are lots of howtos around for Postgresql too.

Re: [Bacula-users] removing indexes on File table

2011-08-02 Thread Annette Jaekel
Thats amazing, because I searched for reasons of bad performance in the last
days both for backup (18 hours for a full of 300 GB with 5 million files) and
in restores (building the corresponding file tree from my postgres database
take more than 10 minutes). One of the first hint I found was to create these
indicies you just remove. So I create them, but without any influence
corresponding to the performance.

Can anyone tell me: Should these indicies (PathID, FilenameID) be advantageous
for the database accesses or not? Or is this depending from database package
(mysql, postgres)?

Hi James,

no problem.

Just a question, why you don't try the latest version (5.1.0 alpha) ?

This version include new features and is bug less.
