Hey Sonic,
Agh...
At least take a look at Jedit Ω (1,840 Yen ~ $16.00 USD).
http://www.artman21.com/en/jeditOmega/
It will do what TextEdit will do and a whole lot more.
You have to
Yeah, Markdown is interesting, but with over 1.8 million words across a
couple dozen novels plus assorted novellas, novelettes, and a short story
or two already written in TextEdit, i’m already invested in doing things as
my odd personal mix of normal rich text formatting plus Sonic’s Quirky

a new HTML document in BBEdit for each story chapter from a
template, with all the header and navigation stuff.
5) Paste the chapter HTML from the TE HTML document into the body HTML area
of the newly-created BBEdit individual chapter HTML document. Populate some
navigation information.

Hey Sonic
on the WWW hasn't
helped, nor has studying the BBEdit sample files.
I cannot figure out how to use AppleScript to create a new HTML document
from an existing template file, as i easily do manually via ^⌘N then select
my template then type in the title in the Title field and tap Create.
I did try

BTW. I haven't studied the drafts of HTML5 much yet...and they aren't
finalized...but I got the impression that the preferred usage of the
doctype was in lower case. I guess I need to do some more studying.

Are there plans for updating BBEdit to include HTML5 documents?
When I create a new HTML document, I have the option of inserting the
DOCTYPE. There is no choice (didn't expect it to yet ;-) for HTML5.
Something like this:
!DOCTYPE HTML
html lang=en
head
meta charset=utf-8
Thanks

There was a big thread on this a couple of weeks ago, and I thought it was
mentioned that Barebones is looking into it.
Of course, if you want it, the best thing to do is to send

Sorry for the faux pas. I just downloaded BBEdit and joined this
group. I know that I should do a search first. I have no idea why I
didn't do that this time before asking.
Good to hear that there are plans for the change to include HTML5.

Since 9.3 (well, since some point last week) BBEdit now crashes when I
use the 'New HTML Document' command.
Removing all preference files fixes it, but when I re-replaced
com.barebones.bbedit.plist the crash returns.
I'd really rather not start from scratch with a whole new prefs file,

I've used BBEdit for years. I just upgraded to 9.2 from 8.x today, and
I'm not sure if I'm finding a bug or something else with the New HTML
Document command and my existing templates.
I've got some longstanding templates with the #BODYTEXT# placeholder.
