[Bf-committers] VFX Reference Platform Support

Hi,
In the beginning of the month the admins [1] revisited the status of
Blender's VFX Reference Platform compliance.

The final proposal is presented in a blog post:
https://code.blender.org/2022/09/vfx-reference-platform-2023-2024/

Basically:
* Blender in 2023 and 2024 will be fully compatible with the VFX Reference
Platform.
* The Blender 3.3 release branch has a new build option to compile with
Python 3.9.
* Organizations and studios, please get involved.

[Bf-committers] Geometry Nodes sub-module meeting

Hi,
The Geometry Nodes (and Hair project) meetings have a new format and
time/place.

They will happen every two weeks on Wednesday at 15:00 CEST via video chat
(the first meeting will be exceptionally at a different time). The agenda
will be proposed before the meetings, and everyone is welcome to join.

The module members will still hold daily open kick-offs. But for people
attending sporadically, the team thought it would be better to have a

[Bf-committers] Too many high priority issues for Blender 3.2

Hi,

The number of unfixed high priority issues are alarming at the moment. On
April alone they skyrocketed from an already high 25 issues to 65 [1].

I urge the modules to get the grasp of this, and prioritize this over new
projects developments. This is also the time to roll back features that are
the culprit of too many regressions.

Remember that later today Thomas will announce that we will enter bcon3 for
Blender 3.2. And that usually means even more bugs will be reported once we
announce the 3.2 beta.

This is the current breakdown per-module:
* EEVEE & Viewport: 27
* Render & Cycles: 13
* Modeling: 12
* User Interface: 10
* Sculpt, Paint & Texture: 8
* Nodes & Physics: 5
* Pipeline, Assets & I/O: 5

But if you look at the 2021 and 2020 editions of the GSoC you can find a

I believe Blender should stick to the VFX platform.

After all that has been said, I think it may boil down to making a decision
between immediate known benefits and strategic uncertain long-term benefits.

* On one hand we have tangible benefits for some users that we know of
(e.g., Python scripters will benefit from Python 3.10).
* On the other hand sticking to the VFX platform can pay off in the long
run with making Blender more likely to be integrated in large pipelines.

One of the long-term goals for the Blender project, is to welcome more
contributions by the industry. And I think investing on that vision trumps
the immediate benefit the latest Python (or other library) brings to
Blender.

To have studios contributing to Blender is a two-way street. And Blender
sticking to the VFX is the least the Blender project can do on its end. I
look forward to see this and other efforts in that direction, such as
onboarding, code documentation, infrastructure and development practices.

The Blender 3.0 release is on track for release on Friday 3rd December.

* As of now, do not commit to `blender-v3.0-release` branch without
clearing up with Philipp Oeser or me directly.
* The plan is to start the build process Thursday night CET.
* Any non-showstoppers can be committed to master and listed in the
potential 3.0.1 task  (T93479).
* At the moment there is no high priority bug that is blocking the release
[*].

For anything release related join #blender-coders on blender.chat.

[Bf-committers] Blender 3.0 Code Architecture Documentation

Hi,

There was a meeting today at the Blender Institute to tackle the code
documentation deficit we have in Blender [1].

The initial outcome was that developers here will allocate 3 full days in
December to cover important undocumented parts in the wiki [2].

The work will be done asynchronously but most people will be around to
provide feedback. Everyone is welcome to join and document the parts of the
code they know well.

The effort is centralized in the task T93407 [3]. Sharing the progress,
asking for feedback and questions can happen in #blender-coders.

Hi,
Blender 3.0 is now officially in the bcon4 stage. All on track for a smooth
release on December 3rd.

blender-v3.0-release is now considered frozen to prepare for the release.
Only critical and carefully reviewed bug fixes allowed.

It is important to keep an eye in the tracker for any unexpected high
priority regression. From the existing high priority issues those are still
planned to be fixed for 3.0:

* T92577: Cannot open folder shortcuts under Windows (Julian Eisel will
work on this tomorrow).
* T93310: Compositor: Crash due to broken image paths (Jacques Lucke made a
patch, waiting for Jeroen/Manuel to review).

Thanks everyone for all the energy devoted to reporting, triaging and
fixing bugs/reviewing patches the last couple of days.

Hi,

Today a few high priority issues were fixed, yet there are still many in a
unknown state (is someone working on it? how much work is to fix it? is it
really a critical issue? what is blocking a patch?).

Let's move bcon4 at least a full day so we can better asses the situation.

Please use this extra time to focus on the high priority issues. I know it
is tempting to use the time to fix nice-to-have-bugs, but those can also be
addressed later in future 3.0 corrective releases.

I've updated the 3.1 project page [1] with a proposal for the Bcon dates:

* Bcon1, New features and changes, October 27, 2021
* Bcon2, Improve and stabilize, December 29, 2021
* Bcon3, Bug fixing only, January 26, 2021
* Bcon4, Prepare release, March 2, 2021
* Bcon5, Release, March 9, 2021

I basically added the corresponding weeks [2] based on when Bcon1 started.
I'm not happy with Bcon2 happening during the Christmas holidays, and would
love to hear what the modules think.

Note: I personally won't be around for the Bcon2 and the Bcon4 dates.

Blender 3.0 now continues in the blender-v3.0-release branch, for bug
fixing only. Blender 3.1 development started in the master branch, for new
features.

During bcon3 patch review is highly encouraged. Please try to get a pair of

We are officially in 3.0 bcon2 [1]. The following is the current status of
the pending features.

Original bcon1 targets postponed to bcon2:

Features postponed to 3.1:

* Clip Editor (exposing operators as tools) [3].

All the bcon2 show stoppers are now already in master, including:

* Grease Pencil split weight modifier in two.

The bcon2 will last slightly less than a month. Bcon3 is on October 20,

Today we had the meeting in #blender-coders about bcon2 targets [1].

To make sure there is enough time to finish the main targets, we agreed to
move bcon2 for another week on 29/Sep. At that day same time, same place
this can be confirmed [2].

[Bf-committers] Blender 3.0 Release Dates

Hi,

This is an update following the Blender 3.0 release planning [1]. After
having checked with the modules, we can finally settle on the following
proposal:

* September 22 - bcon2
* October 20 - bcon3
* November 24 - bcon4
* December 1 - bcon5 (release)

There are already lots of new features in master [2]. And each module still
has some smaller features planned before bcon2. That said, we are still
waiting for the following big targets pending to be fully merged to master:

* Cycles-X.
* Geometry Nodes (Fields).
* Asset Browser (Catalogs, Materials, ...).
* UI Workshop proposed changes [3].

EEVEE reactor [4] was postponed for 3.1.

More details about your specific patch (D9599).

The solution you found has some merits, however it is incomplete and
doesn't work as well as the one that we now have in master. More
specifically it doesn't account for cases when the collection is linked
inside more than one collection (it would just get the first matching user
of said collection).

This problem wasn't considered a priority until a related issue came up
(overrides resync in some production files). By then Bastien tried your
patch which didn't fix the problem. He then proceed to create his own
solution, which is what ended up being merged.

The use case of 9,000 collections is not one that was taken into
consideration for the solution. It simply doesn't represent the type of
scene the system is built for. That said this can be improved a bit. So if
you are interested on help this further please reach out to Bastien, he has
some ideas on how the code can iterate a bit faster on the collections. He
is also available if you need more clarifications on the shortcomes of your
patch.

If you need more clarifications let me know. All in all I hope we (the
development team) can improve the communication even further to prevent
situations like this one.

As for the "fancy" release notes. Not everything that is in the wiki shows
up there.

The communication team makes a selection on what is worth showing, what to
simply mention, and what to leave only to the wiki. The "Blender Features
in 5 minutes" and the reel editors also reverse the right to pick and
choose what is highlighted.

Are you talking about an add-on in particular? There are two related but
separate topics in your email:

1. Contributors credit
The script that generates the credits [1] is indeed be skipping the add-on
repositories.

2. Release notes
It is the responsibility of any developer that contributes code, to
document the changes and mention them in the (wiki) release notes [2]. If
an add-on maintainer needs wiki access they can contact me directly via
email or as dfelinto in blender.chat.

I've just posted about the changes made in Blender in the past year
regarding its license compliance:

Starting officially in Blender 2.93, the source is shared in two ways.
First the usual tarball with the Blender code. Second, with a more complete
tarball including the source of all the libraries Blender links to.

After 2.93 this will get even better. There is a plan to support making the
source using the libraries straight from the downloaded tarball.

Thanks everyone who contributed to this. I'm very happy to see this
year-long endeavor coming to a happy ending.

[Bf-committers] New 2.93 release date: June 2

Hi everyone,
The 2.93 release will move to the next week's Wednesday (June 2).

Some of the reasons for this:
* There is still one (T88250) crash that we are trying to fix for 2.93.
* The number of untriaged reports >400 is too high and going up [1]. I want
to check with the triaging team if there is no high priority issues among
them.
* Last minute buildbot fixes last Friday.

Basically we are postponing it to make sure the release can be more tested
and is stable enough. We already got the number of high priority issues to
plummet remarkably [2].

Hello everyone,

Blender 2.93 is now officially in the bcon4 stage. The plan is to release
it next week.

blender-v2.93-release is now considered frozen to prepare for the release.
Only critical and carefully reviewed bug fixes allowed.

It is important to keep an eye in the tracker for any unexpected high
priority regression. This will be a LTS release, however that should not
stop us from having the critical fixes in for the release itself.

* Tagged all the meetings with #meeting
* Renamed "Weekly Development Notes" → "Weekly Updates"
* Renamed "Meetings Archive" → "Other Meetings"

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage the modules to use the
"Weekly Updates" post as the goto place for anything related to Blender
weekly-updates.

In the simplest of the cases it can be a link to a module meeting notes. In

the past few weeks have a few examples of this.

Hi,

In preparation for the upcoming release of Blender 2.93, there is another
bug sprint this week [1]. It goes from Apr 26 to 30.

At the moment there are 714 bugs, of which 9 are high priority and other 11
are potential high priority issues yet to be confirmed by the modules.

An experimental dashboard is checking daily for the number of new reports,
accumulated untriaged reports and other metrics [2].

[Bf-committers] Now at 2.93 Bcon3 (and 3.0 Bcon1)

We have now entered the next phase of the release cycle. The focus for bug
fixing is on the 2.93 beta.

We are also starting the 3.0 release cycle. This will be the first release
with the new version numbering system:

There are some pending issues on how we parse the version number. The
official task to keep track of these is:

In short, Blender 2.93 now continues in the blender-v2.93-release branch,
for bug fixing only. Blender 3.0 development started in the master branch,

During bcon3 patch review is highly encouraged. Please try to get a pair of
eyes on your changes before they are sent to blender-v2.93-release. For

Missing features:
* Spreadsheet: Breadcrumbs and node pinning (D10931).
* Geometry Nodes workspace (T86499).
* Splashscreen (waiting for author to reply).

The other spreadsheet feature will be postponed to 3.0:
* Spreadsheet Editor: Row filters (D10959)

[Bf-committers] 2.93 Sprint Bug Sprint

Hi everyone,
This comes a bit late, but welcome to the first bug sprint [1] week of the
2.93 release cycle [2]. It goes from Apr 5 to 9.

Now the development is concentrated in the modules and projects there is
less reasons to do this as a centralized effort. That said, some developers
were asking for an official week for this.

Next week the beta is announced and we need to set the bug tracker in a
good state to welcome new reports pouring in. The numbers of reports is a
bit alarming at the moment, so:

Bug triagers:
* To help with questions regarding how to help triaging, check the
#blender-triagers channel.
* An experimental dashboard is checking daily for the number of new
reports, accumulated untriaged reports and other metrics [3].

Modules:
* Assign / claim high priority issues
* Tag as 3.0 any high priority issue that is not planned to be addressed by
2.93.
* Classify the bugs, even if there will be no time to work on them.
* As always feel free to move bugs and unclassified reports as known issues
if they won't be tackled soon.

Welcome.

A good way to get started is to go over bug reports that involve crash and
try to bisect the issue to the faulty commit. You can also to share a full
backtrace of the crash to help further investigation, like this:

Also keep in mind that there are plenty of bugs that may be a good
candidate but have not been tagged as "Good First Issue" simply because no
one started to investigate them.

To find janitor work it may be easier to join the development channel
#blender-coders on https://blender.chat and see if any module has already

[Bf-committers] Accepted patches waiting to be committed

Hi,

I went over all the "accepted" patches in the phabricator. Some of them
have been accepted by all reviewers already and I urge the developers to
either:

1. Commit them
2. Close them
3. Change status to "Plan Changes" or similar.

D6008, D6426
* Sergey: D9220, D7423, D4906

* Julian Eisel: D9853, D5188 (UI: though it may be out of date)
* Kévin Dietrich: D8751
* Jeroen: D7138, D7046
* Campbell: D9857

For the other accepted that had only a few reviewer accepting it, I changed
the other reviewers as blocking.

Developers should feel comfortable after accepting a patch to either remove
the other reviewers or to set them as blocking. That way the "Accepted"
status can be taken for real.

There are also really old patches (2016, 2017). I left them untouched for
now. But developers feel free to close them/commit.

Hi,
I added the targets to the 2.93 project page [1].

The idea is (for me) to only tick them out if they are committed (most of
them are) and documented (with an image an demo file when possible). Some
of them may be ready already, but I will check the documentations and
overall features in another moment.

If any module has good high-quality demo files please reach out to Metin
Seven. He can help checking the quality of the files and upload them to the
demo files page [2].

Hi,
We are officially in 2.93 bcon2 [1].

"Work to improve, optimize and fix bugs in new and existing features. Only
smaller and less risky changes should be made in this phase."

Status update:
* Grease pencil new modules for Import and Export was postponed (D10482).
* Compositor: Add Anti-Aliasing node (D2411) can be merged early in bcon2
if the VFX module decides to do so.
* Sculpting tools were supposed to be merged as experimental until they got
icons but have not been merged yet (T85376). It is not clear yet if they
were postponed or what happened.

[Bf-committers] Blender 2.93 bcon2 delay

Hi,

Nothing alarming but I had a too busy day and I didn't manage to stop to
double check if everything planned got in (*).

So I'm moving bcon2 one day at least so I can do things properly tomorrow.
The bcon1 to bcon2 is mostly an internal formality anyways so this should
not impact the ongoing projects. That said I think it is important to
communicate this properly.

(*) - I know Grease Pencil was still debating about the edit curves for
instance. Also I'm glad Line Art was merged already.

[Bf-committers] Spreadsheet editor design

As part of the geometry nodes project there is a need for a spreadsheet
editor for a few use cases. However this is an editor that is not exclusive
to the nodes pipeline however and can relate to many other projects
(overrides, drivers, ...).

We did the design taking other use cases into consideration, but I would
like to invite the other modules to see if anything is missing or to plan

Thanks for your contributions and your direct involvement with the UI (User
Interface)  module.

In fact the UI module is still holding meetings, and those topics could
have been easily presented there. Julian Eisel is acting as coordinator,
and can facilitate things moving forward until there is someone in the role
of module owner.

* D8084, D10419 - are changes on existing behavior and thus should have
their design approved before it lands. Usually that means going through the
module owner(s) for approval. For the time being that means the module
needs to find a way organize and present them to Ton to get his approval. I
believe Julian is already working on ways to organize that.

Also keep in mind that this dynamic will work better if the module can
organize ahead of time a few tasks it wants to prioritize, and have them
presented. This helps also for community involvement.

Finally, a change on a feature like join/close areas should try to involve
its original developer. In that sense, even with module owner the D8084
patch would have to go through Ton.

* D10469, D10470, D10483 - a bugfix by definition is considered a valid
todo and part of the approved module agenda.

The only thing that may keep some of this (D10483) hanging is if it is
really low priority/corner case. Modules that have too many open issues are
encouraged to tag the low priority issues as known issues.

As well as more clearly communicate good pre-approved todos to be tackled
by the module team. This way the contributors and reviewers can make sure
that their time is well spent on the issues and projects that are the most
relevant.

Hi,
There are still showstoppers preventing 2.92 release. The pending steps are:

* Patches to be finalized + committed (D10507,  D10443).
* Buildbot kicked to deliver a new public release candidate build.
* The original reporters to confirm the issues are gone.

Once this is out of the way we can make a final call on when to release
2.92. Usually a full day should happen between the fix lands and we call it
release-ready.

That means the release will likely happen on Thursday instead of Wednesday.
Ultimately it will depend on when we get the final commit, how complex it
is, and how confident the team is on the tests.

* Google Summer of Code Ideas page is still mostly with old ideas, deadline
is February 19th (Friday).
* Bulidbots will be on maintenance 16 February, Tuesday.
* 2.92 bcon4 on 17 February.
  - We will go back to using release_candidate tags.
  - High frequency tablet input will be removed since it introduced many
problems for old drivers, but will come back in 2.93.
* 2.93 bcon2 on 17 February.
* Python 3.9 support has landed for 2.93 alpha.
  - This has ended Blender support for Windows 7 and 8.
  - The new minimum requirement is Windows 8.1.

Hi Nathan,

First let me say that this was poorly communicated on my end. I will try 
to clarify now.


The meetings were not effective as they used to be a few years ago. One 
of the main purposes of the meetings was to review and agree on 
development and design proposals. This was a good moment to engage in 
real-time with everyone involved in Blender development, especially 
across time-zones. The last meetings have seen very low attendance and 
interaction, making the presence of most attendees felt like a formality.


I see this as a reflection of much Blender has grown recently. Dealing 
with the growth of the Blender project while keeping it welcoming and 
accessible is an important challenge, and active efforts are being 
carried out in that regard.


While for time being the general meeting is put on hold, all the other 
activities carry on as usual. The chat channels, this mailing list, they 
are all open, public and more active than ever. All the contributors are 
encouraged to share their roadmaps. The modules are always open to new 
contributors.


What we expect next is two things: First, module teams are to organize 
themselves more independently. They can decide on how often and how to 
carry their public meetings. This is happening weekly already for the 
animation and other modules. I would like this to be implemented for 
other modules as well.


Another thing is, at some moment (I don't know when yet) I would like we 
to have a regular meeting with all the modules where we can schedule 
release targets, assign bigger projects and find out topics related to 
planning Blender as a general. For this, monthly is probably enough. But 
feedback in the format and frequency is welcome.


Besides, this week Ton will share a post about modules and roles that 
will help draw a picture of how all the modules related with the 
development of Blender.


And as always, informal communication keeps happening on 
#blender-coders. I hope this helps clarifying the situation,

It's great that you were able to talk to Ray directly.  However, I was also

As an addendum, there have been some interesting talk on #blender-coders
about how the meetings used to happen, how new developers felt welcome, ...
I'm glad that stopping the meeting (as we were doing) is already helping to
shade the light on the issues we had for a long time. Yet we were not
addressing since there was a half functional meeting.

The Monday (developers) and the Tuesday (modules) meetings are currently on
hold. The Monday one has very little quorum and is rarely useful.

The Tuesday talks (module meetings) are quite a joy actually and I will
miss talking to the modules owners 1:1. But they have always being more
like a  healthy check then a permanent solution. What we need instead is to
make sure the modules are properly structured and can operate autonomously.
But this is a separate topic.

I have a new idea on how to do the weekly communication of the ongoing
module and projects:

* We keep the weekly online page in devtalk for the weekly notes [1].
* Developers keep adding their weekly reports there.
* Everyone adds relevant announcements there
* [new] Modules and projects then add their notes there as well,
asynchronously.
* [new] At the end of Mondays I do a final pass in the page and post it
here.
