The 46th Wiarton Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday, December 15.
Temperatures hovered around -5C all day, with brisk northwesterly winds and
generally sunny skies interspersed with scattered snow flurries. The
waters of Georgian Bay were open, as were faster-flowing creeks and rivers,
but
The ninth annual Neyaashiinigmiing (Cape Croker) Christmas Bird Count was

some other parts of southern Ontario that day, count weather was

The 45th (not quite annual) Wiarton Christmas Bird Count was held on

The bird was found by Kiah Jasper and Alfred Raab earlier this morning.
But they had another commitment and couldn't stick around. Kiah messaged
me that they had found a small heron at Oliphant (Little Blue, or possibly
Reddish Egret, or something else).
I zipped down and found the bird at

Not gannet, but shortly after 3 pm today, I suspect I had two Fish Crows at
our home near Lake Victoria in Stratford. Unfortunately the birds did not
call, but a number of factors suggested Fish Crow.

Just a note for anyone considering shorebirding at West Perth Wetlands
(a.k.a., Mitchell Sewage Lagoons)...
Water levels are still a bit high in the four traditionally good cells (NW,
NE, SW & fenced) to support good shorebird numbers, although conditions are
improving in the first (NW) cell,

This afternoon between 4:15 and 4:40 pm I counted 1,375 American Robins flying
west into the brisk westerly wind along the north shore of Wildwood Lake just
east of Highway 7. Unbelievable!
Equally interesting was a distinctly (but only slightly) darker-mantled Herring

I returned today from a week at our property (no road, phone, or internet

Apologies for the late post...
Today between noon and 1 pm I had a juvenile Pacific Loon off the tip of the
point at Rock Point Provincial Park.
The bird was distinctly smaller than the ~12 Common Loons with which it was
associating, initially quite close to shore

There was a Hudsonian Godwit feeding in shallow water on the south side of the
Wildwood Reservoir a few hundred metres west of the Road 29 bridge late
yesterday evening and this morning until at least 10:30 a.m.
Also present were 90+ White-rumped Sandpipers, a few

Just a heads-up that conditions remain good for shorebirds at the West Perth
Wetlands (a.k.a. Mitchell Sewage Lagoons), so anything could turn up.
Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon I counted an amazing total of 118 White-rumped
Sandpipers among the 225+ shorebirds of 10

Although shorebird diversity and numbers have been lower for the past week or
so (for no obvious reason -- seemingly good conditions continue) at the West
Perth Wetlands, there was a Long-billed Dowitcher at the north end of the
fenced cell late this afternoon.

Besides the smallish all-white mystery gull I reported this afternoon at Adam
Beck, there was also an Iceland (Kumlien's) and a Thayer's -- both reported on
eBird by others recently. The juvenile Sabine's was also still very active and
visible below the falls at noon.

Shortly before sunset this evening there was an alternate-plumaged Red Knot on
