On December 27th, 38 hearty field and 20 feeder observers participated in the 68th Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count. It was a cold day with sun in the morning and cloud in the afternoon. This years count is very close to our 10 year average with over 5400 individuals and 45 species.

The Carleton Place CBC took place on Dec 27th in the middle of this bitterly cold patch (B. Frum Day) . 38 brave souls wandered the fields and forests typically with only their eyes visible. In addition 22 feeders were monitored. The count had low numbers both of individuals and species;

After 7 tries I finally saw the RT Loon. Bouncing in the chop and diving made it difficult. Next time I will stay on the beach. Okay Mark Gawn encouraged me to go back to using eBird so I did on my mobile Once again any bird labeled rare leads to a message that it needs to be confirmed

The shorebirds continue in the field on 12th Pakenham near #2409. Dunlin, BB Plover, G Yellow legs, WR Sandy and Pectoral. Also one G Gull. a flock of 100 Pipits fighting the winds flew over. Head north on 29 from Pakenham and turn onto 12th Go north to fields patially flooded with geese.
