[Ontbirds] Tundra swans, Bald Eagles - Grand River
Hello birders. Tundra Swans were seen on the Grand River in Glen Morris at the high level bridge on Sat. Feb. 12. Park (carefully) near the gas station end and walk along the bridge's sidewalk; the traffic can be dangerous there. Buffleheads, Common Goldeneye and Common Mergansers were also on the river that day. It's an area of the Grand often ice-free in the winter because of the warmwater discharge coming downriver from the Cambridge sewage treatment plant. When the weather is around the zero degree mark, the Grand is ice-free in Paris with great views of waterfowl from downtown Paris, its two bridges and at the edge of town on East River Road just past the train bridge. There have been several sighting of Bald Eagles from the downtown parkette this winter on Grand River Street North which is the main drag. If you follow East River Road out of town along the river north to Glen Morris, there are almost always good birds along the way. Paris and Glen Morris can both be accessed from Highway 401 by taking the Hwy. 24 exit south through Cambridge. To avoid the heavy urban traffic, use the Townline Road exit or rural roads. [Ontbirds] Cobourg No Mew
For those out of town people, as of 5:00pm, yesterday's Mew Gull found by Doug McRae was not seen again today. However, the BLKittiwake was reliable and easily photographed all day. There were many white-winged gulls, especially before noon; Iceland and Glaucous of all ages, and at least 1 adult Thayer's. In the early afternoon there were up to 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. The numbers were about half of yesterday but still close to 3000 gulls. RPope ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Carden Hawk Owl Dead
The Northern Hawk Owl that was found during our Carden Alvar CBC on January 2, 2011 has been hunting in the wetland near the junction of Road 46 from Simcoe and Road 6 from City Of Kawartha Lakes. Several birders have reported this bird this winter during the month of January and into February. This morning it was found dead on the side of the road between Avery Point Road and the junction where is was first reported. It had a Meadow Vole clutched in its right talon and had a broken left wing. We can only assume that it was hit by a passing vehicle as it hunted along the roadway. I know that the bird had been banded a few weeks early but this dead bird did not have any bands on either leg. For the last three years, a Northern Hawk Owl has been observed during winter each year just after Christmas in most cases near Orillia. All have ended up the same way being found dead after being hit by a passing vehicle. This bird had been observed a few weeks ago hunting near the road and flying low over the road barely being missed by passing cars. I was hoping that this one would make it through the winter to return north in the spring but it didn't make it. I wanted to let you know in case you were planning a trip up to look for the owl. Other birding news from the area is that large flocks of Bohemian Waxwings can still be found in the area. This has certainly been the year of the waxwing for our area.
