[Ontbirds] High Park Raptorwatch

2017-10-11 Thread Tim McCarthy via ONTBIRDS
From:Tim Mccarthy via Ontbirds

Greetings fellow Raptorwatchers:

Tuesday was a good one on Hawk Hill, there were lots of birds passing through,
lots of sharp-eyed observers, and a few newbies who finally got to see what a
Raptorwatch should be like. Thanks to all who came out, especially the birds.

Northwest winds, albeit light ones, brought lots of small Passerines and the
attendant Raptors who follow them. Everybody had a great time with the probable
exception of some of the Passerines. Migration started around 10am and tapered
off around 4 pm.

We recorded:

Turkey Vultures 157

Bald Eagle 1

N. Harrier 5

Sharp Shinned 89

Coopers 5

Broad Winged2

Red Tailed 5

Am. Kestrel 6

Peregrine F.1

Unid. Buteo1

Unid. Raptor 1

Total 283

I'm so grateful to the many folks who say they miss my commentaries. HMANA is
the website to find all that stuff every day.Home page is HMANA.org but there
is a shortcut also.

hawkcount.org

will get you straight to the reports.Don't make the mistake of asking for
Hawkwatch.org as it is also a terrific site but not the same.

Thanks to Bob for taking a shot at today's count especially given the

Today it was rain as predicted with strong E and eventually NE winds.
Complete cloud cover and cooler temps that actually dropped from 11C to 10C

Just 7 birds today... 3 N. Harriers, 2 Sharpies, a lone Cooper's Hawk and
single Am. Kestrel.

Non-raptor Observations:
A few non-raptors reported with Am. Crows, Eastern Phoebe, YB Sapsucker,
Blue Jays, Winter Wren, Am. Robins and Common Loon.

Monarch count: 5

Predictions:
Thursday could still see more rain... and predicted winds aren't the best
being strong from the E.

Weather:
Well...the weather today was definitely on the miserable side of the
spectrum. And to those of you who know me, no I was not in flip-flops.
It was raining quite steady until about 10am local time. The rest of the
day remained damp, and windy. The occasional shower from time to time and
the strong north to northeast winds made for a chilly one, and kept me off
the top platform for most of the day.

Raptor Observations:
I wasn't expecting much of a flight but within minutes of the rain stopping
birds started moving. The first hour yielded 3 N. Harriers, 63 Sharpies, 72
Am. Kestrels and a Merlin. At this point I was expecting a good
Sharpie/Kestrel day, but within a few minutes of the second hour Vultures
started streaming right over the tower and along the shoreline. To my
astonishment, even a few Buteos were flying in the patchy rain. In the 5
hours of counting, I totaled 1370 Raptors. Good flights of TVs (766),
Harriers (20), Sharpies (283), Kestrels (275), and Merlin (7). Majority of
all birds counted occurred within the first 3 hours. These totals were
definitely worth getting a little wet and cold for!

Non-raptor Observations:
eBird checklist at: https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39842459 A big
surprise of the day was a Monarch out flying in the strong winds.

Predictions:
Northeast winds predicted in the morning switching to southeast for the
afternoon. Unfortunately though, rain also predicted in the morning.

A juvenile Greater White-fronted Goose was seen about 20 minutes ago foraging on
a short grass pasture field among Canada Geese and Crows on the south side of
Davis Drive approximately 1-2 km west of Leaskdale Creek. Pinkish bill with no
white at base of bill, no white cheek patch, light upper breast, greyer towards
belly but no dark barring.
