When I saw the initial post on this thread I thought to myself, "Great,
maybe I can get some tips on using off-the-shelf scanning applications."
I was disappointed to see that OpenBook and Kurzweil were thrown back at us
here.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I do believe the original question
Kurzweil 1000 is also a excellent software for recognizing.

Yes, look in the advanced options tree view. THings have changed a bit there

I'm guessing it's visual studio as there are some blind people including me
who want to do programing.
As for a tutorial freedom scientific has a podcast in which one of there
people demonstrates using c#.
I'm not sure of which one it is but if anybody wants it I can try to find
it.

For Win 7 or Vista, we have Speech Recognition built in. Pretty good
accuracy as well. Marty Marco's eMicrophones site has a "Toolkit" for
creating additional macros.

Mine ran our some months ago and I had a devil of a time with it being
accessible; they wanted to charge me for having it for another year so I got
