Not sure what part of the country anybody is in or what type of house exactly is being spoken of, but as someone who lives in New England and knows about pipes in winter, you most definately DO NOT want to leave them exposed if the temps fall below freezing if temps falll below freezing. Even

You have already received lots of advice to close them in the winter and open in the summer. A very good modern solution is the thermostatically controlled vent. You can get them, as they say, at your local home improvement store. They have a couple of advantages, you don't have to remember
