Short answer: it's not serious, long answer in my reply to your post in
the orca mailing list, cf
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2018-June/msg00189.html

Anyway, thanks for reporting, I will take care of that one way or
another.

Okay, upgrade complete and /etc/asound.conf has been removed.
Whenever I run orca-off and orca-on I get the following warning in this
environment:
(process:1420): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf:
Error spawning command line 'dbus-launch
--autolaunch=1029b2d79b4da8ff62d6b7bf5a1d0b3d --binary-syntax
--close-stderr': Child process exited with code 1
Orca has been enabled for user jude.

I don't know what that means and don't know if it's serious or
potentially serious but figured to pass it along.

Re: slint and vlc

2018-06-22 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
This system is not completely up to date.

Please remove these lines in /etc/asound.conf
pcm.default pulse
ctl.default pulse
or just remove the file.

Also, speech dispatcher should now be at version 0.8.8, so check in
/etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc that you have exactly this line:
SOURCE=http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/:PREFERRED

then to get the updated package type:
slapt-get -u # just in case
slapt-get -i speech-dispatcher

As an aside, I tried to use libao as audio backend of speech-dispatcher
and I get better results that using alsa directly.

This confirms what Halim Sahin posted today on the orca mailing list in
response to a post from Janina (and what already told me Samuel Thibault
or Kyle IIRC).

But I will do more testing before uploading an updated package and
anyway you should already get better settings doing what I wrote above.

Best,

Didier

2018-06-22 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Now I'm going to check vlc but did want to say putting the dmix line and
the dsnoop line in /etc/pulse/default.pa enabled orca to work. Speech
sounds like it's coming through a napkin held close to a comb when orca
starts up and when orca shuts down but once inside orca I think seems to
work. I set preferences and all that speech sounded clear but
environment outside of orca preferences seems a bit silent every so
often. Some parts of the desktop seem a little silent but I may be
typing too fast again. This machine has much more memory on it than the
old machine had so we shouldn't be having problems for lack of memory.

Re: slint and vlc

2018-06-21 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Hello Jude,

The output of alsacap indicates that your card 0 is currently in use
by orca or espeakup, as that's why it says:
> Error opening sound device for card 0, device 0: Device or resource
> busy. Skipping.

This is a good thing, as currently if the HDMI card was the first one
you would get no sound at all, unless you attach an audio equipment
to the HDMI port.

As an aside, in next Slint ISO this will be fixed as the working sound
card will be probed during installation, but that's not the issue here.

To investigate further I need to know the exact version of some
packages. Please indicate their whole full name in /var/log/packages:
espeak
espeak-ng
orca
portaudio
speech-dispatcher

Also, please provide the content of /etc/asound.conf and the output of:
grep dmix /etc/pulse/default.pa
grep dsnoop /etc/pulse/default.pa

To elaborate, if your system is up to date you should have an absent or
empty /etc/asound.conf (commented lines put aside)
and /etc/pulse/default.pa should include these two lines:
load-module module-alsa-sink device=dmix
load-module module-alsa-source device=dsnoop

Best,

Didier

Re: slint and vlc

2018-06-21 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
This situation is strange. Earlier I had orca running and espeakup and
had turned espeak off to run startx and both worked. Now only espeakup
works with orca not starting. This new system does have an hdmi port
and I got a strange acpi warning and the only warning in dmesg output
which may have bearing on this situation or may not.
sudo -i dmesg|grep -i "warn"
[0.00] ACPI BIOS Warning (bug): Optional FADT field
Pm2ControlBlock has zero address or length: 0x/0x1
(20150930/tbfadt-654)
I have alsacap on this machine now and will send that output next since
it may be helpful.

2018-06-20 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Then, my assumption is that the issue is having both alsa and
pulseaudio working at the same time, which works now but not
so well previously. I will make some tests myself on a previous version
tomorrow (it's late here), but probably you need to upgrade Slint
to the current version.

Please tell if you tried both in a console (aka tty) and in a graphical
environment, so that I can reproduce your situation.

Best,

Didier

Re: slint and vlc

2018-06-20 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Both work here, so there should be an issue with your sound settings
or installation. Example:

didier[~]$ play /usr/share/sounds/purple/login.wav

/usr/share/sounds/purple/login.wav:

File Size: 192k Bit Rate: 706k
  Encoding: Signed PCM
  Channels: 2 @ 16-bit
Samplerate: 22050Hz
Replaygain: off
  Duration: 00:00:02.18

In:100% 00:00:02.18 [00:00:00.00] Out:48.1k [ | ]Clip:0
Done.
didier[~]$

I did hear the "tune".

Do you have sound with other apps, including espeakup and/or orca?

I ask because you don't say if you use speech or a Braille device.

Best,

Didier

Re: slint and vlc

2018-06-20 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
A little more background, I haven't been able to get
/usr/share/sounds/purple/login.wav to play with aplay or play or paplay.
No error returns but neither does any sound.

That's weird, vlc should play pretty much any file, local or remote.

The version of Slint shouldn't matter at all.

>From "vlc -h":

Usage: vlc [options] [stream] ...
You can specify multiple streams on the commandline.
They will be enqueued in the playlist.
The first item specified will be played first.

Options-styles:
--option A global option that is set for the duration of the program.
-option A single letter version of a global --option.
:option An option that only applies to the stream directly before it
and that overrides previous settings.

Stream MRL syntax:
  [[access][/demux]://]URL[#[title][:chapter][-[title][:chapter]]]
  [:option=value ...]

Many of the global --options can also be used as MRL specific :options.
Multiple :option=value pairs can be specified.

URL syntax:
  file:///path/file Plain media file
  http://host[:port]/fileHTTP URL
  ftp://host[:port]/file FTP URL
  mms://host[:port]/file MMS URL
  screen:// Screen capture
  dvd://[device] DVD device
  vcd://[device] VCD device
  cdda://[device]Audio CD device
  udp://[[]@[][:]]
UDP stream sent by a streaming server
vlc://pause: Pause the playlist for a certain time
vlc://quit Special item to quit VLC

Doesn't this syntax work for you?

Here (but I don't think that the VLC version matter either):
didier[~]$ LANG=en_US.utf8 vlc --version
VLC media player 2.2.8 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.7-14-g3cc1d8cba9)
VLC version 2.2.8 Weatherwax (2.2.7-14-g3cc1d8cba9)
Compiled by root on stable.slint.net (Jan 18 2018 00:49:03)
Compiler: gcc version 5.3.0 (GCC)
