Re: slint and vlc
Short answer: it's not serious, long answer in my reply to your post in the orca mailing list, cf https://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2018-June/msg00189.html Anyway, thanks for reporting, I will take care of that one way or another. Okay, upgrade complete and /etc/asound.conf has been removed. Whenever I run orca-off and orca-on I get the following warning in this environment: (process:1420): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf: Error spawning command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=1029b2d79b4da8ff62d6b7bf5a1d0b3d --binary-syntax --close-stderr': Child process exited with code 1 Orca has been enabled for user jude. Re: slint and vlc
This system is not completely up to date. Please remove these lines in /etc/asound.conf pcm.default pulse ctl.default pulse or just remove the file. Also, speech dispatcher should now be at version 0.8.8, so check in /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc that you have exactly this line: SOURCE=http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/:PREFERRED then to get the updated package type: slapt-get -u # just in case slapt-get -i speech-dispatcher As an aside, I tried to use libao as audio backend of speech-dispatcher and I get better results that using alsa directly. This confirms what Halim Sahin posted today on the orca mailing list in response to a post from Janina (and what already told me Samuel Thibault or Kyle IIRC). But I will do more testing before uploading an updated package and anyway you should already get better settings doing what I wrote above. Now I'm going to check vlc but did want to say putting the dmix line and the dsnoop line in /etc/pulse/default.pa enabled orca to work. Speech sounds like it's coming through a napkin held close to a comb when orca starts up and when orca shuts down but once inside orca I think seems to work. I set preferences and all that speech sounded clear but environment outside of orca preferences seems a bit silent every so often. Some parts of the desktop seem a little silent but I may be typing too fast again. This machine has much more memory on it than the old machine had so we shouldn't be having problems for lack of memory. Hello Jude, The output of alsacap indicates that your card 0 is currently in use by orca or espeakup, as that's why it says: > Error opening sound device for card 0, device 0: Device or resource > busy. Skipping. This is a good thing, as currently if the HDMI card was the first one you would get no sound at all, unless you attach an audio equipment to the HDMI port. As an aside, in next Slint ISO this will be fixed as the working sound card will be probed during installation, but that's not the issue here. To investigate further I need to know the exact version of some packages. Please indicate their whole full name in /var/log/packages: espeak espeak-ng orca portaudio speech-dispatcher Also, please provide the content of /etc/asound.conf and the output of: grep dmix /etc/pulse/default.pa grep dsnoop /etc/pulse/default.pa To elaborate, if your system is up to date you should have an absent or empty /etc/asound.conf (commented lines put aside) and /etc/pulse/default.pa should include these two lines: load-module module-alsa-sink device=dmix load-module module-alsa-source device=dsnoop Best, Didier Le 21/06/2018 à 16:35, Linux for blind general discussion a écrit : > Okay, here is alsacap output: > jude@taf:~$ alsacap > *** Scanning for playback devices *** > Card 0, ID `SB', name `HDA ATI SB' > Device 0, ID `ALC892 Analog', name `ALC892 Analog', 1 subdevices (0 > available) > Error opening sound device for card 0, device 0: Device or resource > busy. Re: slint and vlc
This situation is strange. Earlier I had orca running and espeakup and had turned espeak off to run startx and both worked. Now only espeakup works with orca not starting. This new system does have an hdmi port and I got a strange acpi warning and the only warning in dmesg output which may have bearing on this situation or may not. sudo -i dmesg|grep -i "warn" [0.00] ACPI BIOS Warning (bug): Optional FADT field Pm2ControlBlock has zero address or length: 0x/0x1 (20150930/tbfadt-654) I have alsacap on this machine now and will send that output next since it may be helpful. Re: slint and vlc
Then, my assumption is that the issue is having both alsa and pulseaudio working at the same time, which works now but not so well previously. I will make some tests myself on a previous version tomorrow (it's late here), but probably you need to upgrade Slint to the current version. Please tell if you tried both in a console (aka tty) and in a graphical environment, so that I can reproduce your situation.
