Re: [Boatanchors] meter shunt

2021-06-27 Thread Wilson Lamb

What, is there someone who doesn't have experience with 150 Amp measurements!
See: 150 amp meter shunt - Bing
Most are impressively heavy chunks of conductor, mostly brass looking.
You are right aboout calculating the value, except the shunt has to be very
comfortable at the rated current and have enough mass to not get warm enough to
change value.
I'm sure real shunts have some design effort to maintain near zero tempco.
I have some meter/shunt sets I sell for $20.
If I have an extra shunt, you can have it for $10.
There are 50mV shunts for most any current you want.
The really tricky thing is that you can file the shunt to reduce its corss
sectional area and trim its sensitivity, but only upward.
You can use flat iron or brass bar stock to make one.
You have to drill and tap or drill through holes for attaching the wire with
husky bolts.
You aren't dealing with much resistance, so you want to be sure there's no
chance for the terminals to change their connection quality.

[Boatanchors] MFJ 989C Tuner Repair

2020-08-12 Thread Wilson Lamb
I have one of these with a classic MFJ booboo inside.
The brass runner on the roller coil was not machined correctly and will not
stay engaged with the coil.
I'm planning to machine one, but wonder if anyone has a junker from which I
might get a runner, or even a whole coil?
Taking the coil apart is a real PITA, but it's either that or part out/sell off

[Boatanchors] Boatanchors Used on Boats

2019-09-09 Thread Wilson Lamb
I just read the incredible bio of Elizebeth Friedman, a pioneer cryptanalyst.
Aside from crucial contributions to WWI AND WWII crypto work, she ran the Coast
Guard's
crypto shop that chased rum runners during Prohibition.
Does anyone have info on this work, the radios or people involved?
I'm guessing there were a couple of radio wizards to whom the bootleggers
turned for their designs/installations, given the necessity for discretion...
The book is "The Woman who Smashed Codes" and it's in some libraries or pretty
cheaply on Ebay.
Her husband, William, was also a crypto pioneer who gave heroic service, at the
expense of his health.

[Boatanchors] RCA 1496 Byrd Antarctic RX

2019-08-22 Thread Wilson Lamb
It's been a while since I asked...
Does anyone have one, experience with one, or know where one is?
Or any original documentation?
It was the main RX for the 1928 first Antarctic expedition.
OSU has extensive Byrd material, but surprisingly little is technical. Let me
know if you want to talk about this.
I bought one book, The Radio Manual, by Sterling, that has a couple of pages.
These were VERY expensive, in the 20s, and many were used commercially, by
airlines, for example, to communicate with planes and among their route
stations.
But few survive and I've never seen a single article about them, except in
Sterling.
Their secret weapon was the 22 tetrode RF amplifier, which provides
considerable gain and isolates the 24 regen detector from outside influences,
like frequency shift caused by antenna swinging..

One could, of course, use another xtal as a reference point.

Your blanks are much larger, so I can imagine getting up to 25-20gm weights. A
few trials will tell.
I doubt you have balance weights, so solder up a stack of coins, maybe quarters.

Add one at a time, until you get good performance.
Grind the bottom flat before the first try.
I've thrown away quite a few loose plates from old large xtals.
They would be good as the bottom surface.

[Boatanchors] Signal Shifters

2018-07-03 Thread Wilson Lamb
A few years ago, I got the bug to become a Signal Shifter collector and now I
have five.
But it's time to start thinning, to avoid burdening others with a cleanup, so
I'm testing the waters re selling them on to other caretakers.
I have the 1938, 1940, 1942, and military versions. They look different, but
are virtually identical, circuit wise.
I believe there was an early Shifter with one, or no, VR tube, but I haven't
been able to find one.
They all work, with varying degrees of chirp and drift, but when warmed up can
be decent, for casual use.
SO, is anyone interested in shifters? I have several sets of coils and the
military model has a full drawer of coils.
The '38, the oldest, is the one I'd sell last, but if someone were desperate we
could talk.
I've enjoyed the Shifters and putting them in CX, but One is more than enough!
If you think you might be wanting a Shifter this is a good opportunity. I'm
not giving away, but not looking to get rich either.
Just let me know. I really don't want to use Ebay, but will if necessary.

[Boatanchors] Clipperton L Update

2017-11-18 Thread Wilson Lamb
OK, I got some useful inputs.
As it seemed, there was a metering problem.
I love radio forensics and got to use them here.
I won't give the gory details, but the PO had put a 1K resistor in series with
the meter.
It was not a factor reading B+, since the meter is fed from a 100K source.
It was a BIG factor reading plate current, however, which is done by reading
the voltage across a 0.05 Ohm resistor.
Nominally that's 50mV at one amp and the 20 Ohm meter would need about 40 Ohms
to bring it in.
So why the 1K? The PO was an accomplished engineer, experienced ham, etc, now
SK, unfortunately, so I can't ask him.
I don't know what he did with the amp. Maybe it was hacked by someone else.
Anyhow, I now have idling current as reported by people here, but I have not
applied any RF.
The tubes, likely original (Cetron), are likely fine, since Ip is about 100mA
in CW and 140mA in SSB.
SO there you go. A dead stock Clipperton L in working condition.
Trouble is, I have other amps and don't want to work on this one and it seems
silly not to replace the filter caps, and maybe even the diodes.
Of course the Harbach board does it all for $100.
I'll report when I try some drive.
Meanwhile, if anyone wants it and can pick it up in central NC, let me know.

2017-11-17 Thread Wilson Lamb
Any Clipperton users/experts out there.
I remember when they were the cat's meow, but I don't want to say how long it
was.
I just got an unmodified one, dusty but seems OK.
Funny thing is, it shows almost no idle current on the meter.
IN CW position, it draws 1.5A from the line in stby and goes up to 3.5A in
operate!
Thats over 200VA that doesn't show on the meter!
Not a bad meter, because the B+ reads fine.
Plate current is read as voltage across a 0.05 Ohm resistor, which I havent
measured.
If I can find it, I'll put some current through it and measure the resulting
voltage.
Meanwhile, I'd appreciate advice re updates, most common failure modes, etc.
Amazingly, the op manual says nothing about the operating parameters!
I'd like to sell it, but no bites on QTH.
BTW, it has four original Cetron tubes, condition as yet unknown.

Biedler's Belts is incredible for belts and they have pulleys. You don't need
exact replacements, if you have the ratio right. http://www.biedlers-belts.com/
For the hole, make a couple of shims to fill out the shaft. If the setscrew

[Boatanchors] Navy Transformer

This is going to be recycled if no one claims it.
I think it is from a shipboard PA system.
Not a Beachmaster.
I hope the link works. If not, I'll fix later.

Re: [Boatanchors] 6L6-813 Homebrew CW Transmitter for Sale

2017-09-28 Thread Wilson Lamb
Soon we won't be able to get rid of any of this stuff, so mentioning ebay is a
good thing!
We need every possible method of locating people who might be attracted to BA
stuff!
It looks like it might have been headed for 80m, but not finished?
Is there a plate cap? I see some braid that might have one attached.
The neutralizing cap is VERY close, way too much for an 813, unless it's in
some sort of bridge setup.
Even so, it's close for a normal 813 B+.
There's no link, so how could it be series fed?
Is there a loading cap for a pi network output under the chassis?
Almost looks like something never finished, but why would the B+ be hooked up?
Maybe it was supposed to get a plate choke for parallel feed?

I was given a nicely built pair of 813 a few yr ago.
It was old and dirty, but one would think it had been in service at some time.
Not so! The filaments were wired in series! and there were no parasitic chokes
from the plate choke to the tubes.
It took under an hour to have it on the air, so someone got close but didn't
get their reward!

Someone could strip the tank components and make something usable out of yours
pretty easily.
Good luck,
Wilson

[Boatanchors] Lysco VFO

2017-09-17 Thread Wilson Lamb
I still have this.

As if the Signal Shifter were not enough to eat all my radio time, I have
recently been blessed by the arrival of an apparently quite early Lysco VFO.
The case is grey, 6.5"W X 2.25"H X 4.75"D. There is a twinlead output line
and a grommet for power input and a small sliderule dial calibrated for
80/40/20/10m. There ia one slide switch on the panel, unser the dial and a
knob for frequency setting.

There is a label, but the model number is faded. My best guess on the
number is 320.

I have googled and found the 321, but it's nothing like the one I have.

Anyone in BA land have any info on this??

Maybe a ship's PA system?
I'll try to post links to it.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/b4idxvtlqz48qlr/Audio%20Xfmr%20%281%29.JPG?dl=0

The primary is labeled S,M,F. Maybe start, middle, finish? Never seen before.
Secondary is labeled with what look like a series of low impedances, speaker
system?

The pwr xfmr is 2900VCT, about a foot square and 8" tall. Would make at least

Yet another warning to us all to clean up the stuff while we can!
I'm fighting myself daily to weed out. It's hard to admit that almost no one
wants the big transformers or obsolete tubes I've taken care of for decades!
IMHO, if she can get 50% of current value from someone who will haul it ALL
away she's doing OK.
Lots of it heavy and much of it has a very limited market. How many hams do
you know who know how to, want to, and have the time to nurse a Valiant into
service?
Fun, sure, if you want it, recycling material if you don't.
The RS RXs are good SWL material, Grundigs too. Good Ebay stuff, if someone
has the energy to list it.
Perhaps advertising widely in the region and having an open house would shake
out buyers?
I wish her well; you too,

Re: [Boatanchors] Loudenboomer II

2017-03-19 Thread Wilson Lamb

I have my Loudenboomer running, but the efficiency is not what I think it
should be, getting about 50% max, at about 800W in, CW.
Does anyone have measurements of theirs?
The PS was a mess, with terminal strip cut out, but simple to fix.
Amp seems bulletproof and well made.
The B+ wants to run very high. 90V gives me 3KV at idle, even with the bleeder
changed to 50K!
The cap is 3KV, so I don’t dare run w/o the Variac!
Next will be to try class C, with an appropriate grid leak.

OK, guys, I have cleared out most of the trove of Signal Shifter coils and
forms recently acquired.
It’s no surprise, however, that almost no one wanted any of the six pin
forms/coils.
Since I don’t want them either, I have bought some of the Chinese six pins
sockets on Ebay, for about $2 each.
I got six sockets, so am offering six sets of six pin forms and ceramic
sockets. Remember, some of these forms will have windings (Signal Shifter)
that will have to be removed, at least partially.
So for five bucks, plus postage, you can get a nice, usable, coil form and a
NEW ceramic socket. I have six sets.

[Boatanchors] Signal Shifter Coil Forms

2016-12-28 Thread Wilson Lamb
I’m not bailed out of my hasty purchase yet, but there’s been great progress!
After filling several requests, I’m down to a BUNCH of six pin coil forms for
stripping/reuse.
They are about 1.25X2” and many are for low frequencies, so one could actually
strip down to a desired inductance, with a little calculation, or just start
over.
So all you need are some six pin sockets! If you really need coils, it might
be worth it to buy some of the ebay sockets
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1PC-310-6E5-UX6-42-366-6Pin-Ceramic-Vacuum-Tube-Socket-Valve-Base-DIY-Audio-AMP/191603607226?_trksid=p2045573.c100508.m3226&_trkparms=aid%3D555017%26algo%3DPL.CASSINI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D38530%26meid%3D32e41f81bc1d4e3692ec2ae862b47f15%26pid%3D100508%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26
to use with these. That’s still less than many forms cost!
$2 each, plus post.

[Boatanchors] Signal Shifter Coils

Did you ever order a box lot or grab bag, hoping for bargains, that didn’t pan

I got about 50 Signal Shifter coils, hoping for ham band sets.
Well, I got two partial sets and LOTS of out of bands, unknowns, and blank
forms, 4,5 and 6 pins.
Windings are easily stripped, of course.
So, if you are building rigs or receivers with plug in coils I’m your man!
Seems like $2 each would be a good deal? I hear there is some demand.
Plus freight, but they are very light.
