Re: [boinc_dev] Linux x64 7.0.65 and 7.2.23 builds unrunnable on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2013-10-19 Thread Erik Veit
BOINC on linux, for GUI people who have migrated from windows or mac, it's just
hopeless. Install it from a package manger. Ah! Okay, I can do that.
...where did it go? How do I start it How do I make it start automatically?
Where do I put things like cc_config.xml? Where are the project folders? No
obvious way to tell. And what's up with the out of date versions?

Okay, give up, start over. Download the app from the BOINC web site to my
desktop, and run it from there. Yes! It's running! How to upgrade without
trashing tasks in progress? Impossible. Just finish all WIP, quit BOINC,
download new BOINC to my desktop, and start over.

I'm sure I have a lot of wrong! in what I said. But it's what I have
experienced first hand. And still running BOINC from 8 linux desktops because
of it.

2013-10-19 Thread steffen_moeller
Hi Erik,
After a first shock and reading and thinking over your email several times, I
tend to agree. The direct installation of the upstream package resembles what
MacOS/Windows does. The main effort of the packaging indeed is (once was) to
_not_ have everything under some single albeit undefined place but instead
along the (debateable) Linux/UNIX file hierarchy.
Concerning the version of boinc available, it depends again on what distro and
release you run and where you look. I accept that the very latest packages were
not found, I do not have any immediate idea how to change that, though. I would
have expected google to indicate them, for instance.
Concerning the cc_config.xml, I will investigate what Debian is/should be doing
about. From your comment the answer may be nothing, just the apps directory
would need to be identified. I admit not to have had it on the agenda. The most
invasive thing the packaging might do is to come up with symbolic links to help
with editing in the regular configuration directories ... all where a command
line person would look.
Thank you for your comments

Same experience as Erik's here too.
Just didn't bother to report before on mail lists but had to start few threads
on forums to get it working on CentOS. In my case I stopped running BOINC from
command line (via terminal or MC) from subdirectory of my home folder. Failed
to install working GUI part completely. Definitely not proper config, but at
least it worked.
Not all have time/experience to make proper install by hands and BOINc's pack
doesn't help in this task at all.

Re: [boinc_dev] Linux x64 7.0.65 and 7.2.23 builds unrunnable on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2013-10-19 Thread Uwe Herzke
I'm running 7.0.65 on 12.04LTS_64bit and can't remember any difficulties
with it's installation. But I just installed it over an existing
installation of a previous build.
It's running on a special partition just for BOINC (20GB), and all data
are there on that partition as well.
IIRC I've installed 7.0.65 over some older version, if the data are
right with the DLed file it was 29 Mai 2013 19:20:10 CEST, and, again
iirc, I didn't lose any data.
At least my running CPDN-WU obviously didn't crush at that date
(http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?hostid=1061141).

What I did was this:
DL the package to the folder it should be installed in and stopped BOINC.
Run sudo sh boinc_7.0.65_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh in a terminal in that
folder.
It installed itself in the existing folder.
Restart BOINC by double-clicking run_manager in the folder.
Everything was fine.

What I don’t remember is, which version I installed first on 12.04LTS,
back in 2012, whether it had been the (usually outdated) package from
the software-center, or just an older version with sh, or if I even just
used the old, installed, version from of the previous install,
10.04LTS_64, that was still on the special partition.

Re: [boinc_dev] Linux x64 7.0.65 and 7.2.23 builds unrunnable on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2013-10-18 Thread Stephen Maclagan
O.K, i used Synaptic Package Manager instead, searched for Boinc,

selected Boinc, then Forced it use 7.0.65 instead of 7.0.27
(Why do
they still have 7.0.27 as the default?)
then unselected Boinc and just
downloaded and applied the dependencies,
Boinc 7.2.23 now runs:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7118863
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/show_host_detail.php?hostid=68093

But shouldn't the wiki instructions mention these extra steps?
