Yep, mine are sticky. I have 3, one finally had its display go out (but
otherwise worked). I'd say the "unstable" part
You should be able to go through network setup in your Boom and either
set it to use DHCP (automatic IP from your router) or assign manual IP.
If you do manual IP, you'll enter something like
IP ADDRESS: 192.168.001.027
(where the 1.27 could be anything on your network that is available.

p.s. My house is full of Squeezebox players and antique radios too. My
two favorites, a Zenith Transoceanic Radio (brown leather) and a
Hallicrafters SX101 MkII (a beast at 70lbs!).

Never had the speaker issue (but then again 99% of my boom listening is
as bedside player feeding headphones. Speaker rarely used.
But I did finally have one boom bite the dust this weekend in terms of
Display. Display is blank no matter what. Did all sorts of resets,
