Fantastic Four and Supreme Power. The latter was OK, since it was a
reboot, but the FF stuff wasn't so good.  His ASM work was uneven;
some of it was good and some of it was like he'd never read a Spidey
comic in his life.

Will do! Though I suspect that any juicy information will be posted
to the Intarweb by any number of my fellow nerds about ten seconds
after it's announced, so it may be old news by the time I get back
and have time to send it out to you guys. :-)

I have to say I haven't been too enamored of JMS' comics work on
titles he himself didn't create. I enjoyed Rising Stars and Midnight
Nation a lot, but some of his work for Marvel has been kinda meh.

I don't follow JMS info on teh intarwebs like I used to, so it'll likely be

Straczynski Fan Update

2007-06-21 Thread Mauro Diotallevi
I've seen some people on this list mention being fans of J. Michael
Straczynski, the creator/writer of Babylon 5, Jeremiah, writer of the
Spider-Man comic, etc. Here is some news about movies he is writing or has
written.

According to a post on rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated, Changeling,
written by JMS, produced by Ron Howard, directed by Clint Eastwood, and
starring Angelina Jolie, starts prep next month with plans to open next
year. Also, he has written and turned in a script for a Silver Surfer
spin-off movie, looking at a late 2008 release, They Walked Into Sunlight,
based on the book by Pulitzer prize winner David Maraniss, to be directed by
Paul Greengrass and produced by Tom Hanks, World War Z, based on the Max
Brooks novel, also planned for 2008, and a movie about the life of King
David.

And to quote the last two lines of his usenet posting:

And there are still at least two, and possibly three major
announcements yet to be made at Comic Con, which regardless of
whether
one is a TV or movie fan, an SF fan or a comics fan...are gonna
pin
  people's ears back.

There isn't a day when I don't feel as though I woke up in
somebody
  else's life.

Yes, but I suspect it will likely suck bugs.
The Surfer footage in the movie was very cool looking, but the movie
bore only-some- resemblance to the source material. The
ripped off from the first Star Trek movie version of Galactus played
very weakly, though I understand why they would cut out the Watcher.
IMO the movie was not strong enough to warrant a sequel of any kind,
but I suspect the studios will try and fail.

I thought the movie was fine and fun. I never read the FF comics, so how
relevant it was to the source is immaterial to me. Also, if you're going to
see the movie expecting some sort of existential revelation of the human
condition...

I think if they would have portrayed Galactus true to the comic, it would
have bombed and failed. Lets face it: how cool would a giant purple guy on
the big screen be??? No, I think the portrayal presented in the movie was
perfectly fine and reasonable for a movie. You have to understand, this
movie was not done for hard-core FF fans, just as I have to understand that
ANY historical movie is not meant for historians (ESPECIALLY 300...).

Actually, I enjoyed the movie much more than my 12 year old. He was
psyched up to see it and was very disappointed.

I'm far from what you would call a hard-core FF fan, but I do know the
story and can see that they have set themselves up for either major
logical inconsistencies or a film that will make Ang Lee's The Hulk
look like art. (Actually I liked The Hulk too)
By removing any evidence of Galactus' personality and intelligence,
they completely removed the reasons why The Surfer stays on Earth. If
you had the freedom to roam the universe at will would you stay? Would
you not hasten to return to your beloved Shalla-bal?

The problem I see is that they changed not just the events of the
story, they changed almost everything that made the Silver Surfer who
he was. Sure, Zenn-la and Shalla-bal are mentioned in passing, but
Norrin Rad's heroism is missing and more importantly so is his angst
(not to mention the Power Cosmic). The Surfer is a conflicted and
complex being, but the movie had almost zero character development.

I'm not telling you that you should not have enjoyed the movie, I
certainly did. But I am very disappointed at the paper thin
characterization and the shoehorning of the Surfer into the tired mold
of the action hero. For me, it bodes ill for the coming sequel (and
that is rumored to be an almost sure thing).
