Alas, the balloon is loosing altitude at a steady rate. Now (10pm), below
19,000 feet (Pull up! Pull up!). Glad the battery is still powering the
transmitter -- everything was fine at local sunset.

Hi Gayle,
There's a lot of information on lightning protection at:
http://www.arrl.org/lightning-protection
I think you *definitely* want to ground any antenna tower.
There was a great talk on lightning protection at last August's Summerfest
in Austin. The speaker had a contest-grade station,
Interesting, especially as I'm learning CW from one of Gordo's CD sets
(practicing with both straight key and paddles).
Note that the Fifth Edition of *The Art and Skill of Radio-Telegraphy*
(updated 2013, not-for-free, but modestly priced) is available at:

Thanks to you and Mike (N5MT) and Houston SHOT members for putting me over

I had a great time at my second Field Day, many thanks to the officers,

Sad news indeed. I had a pleasant chat with Bill at Field Day. I'm new to
ham radio and the club, but thankful our paths crossed, however briefly.
Deepest sympathy to family and friends.
