[BVARC] TOMORROW IS THE NIGHT!!! Ham Radio Night at the Skeeters!

2015-08-07 Thread Scott Medbury via BVARC

Don't forget that Ham Radio Night at the Skeeters is tomorrow (Saturday)
evening.

Gates open at 5PM with first pitch at 6:05PM

It is also AM night, Star Wars night and Backpack give-a-way to the first
1000 or so inside.

A bonus for anyone who does not have a ticket Two more tickets have
become available as of a few minutes ago. First come - First Served.

Also, following a $50 donation to the ALS Foundation, my daughter, Kelli,
has accepted the ICE BUCKET Challenge during the game. You do not want to
miss it. She will probably be the only one who is cool.

If you have not already received your tickets, I will be near the entrance
before the game to hand them over. If you have not paid for them, I will be
accepting cash or checks made payable to me.

It will be HOT so you probably want to dress cool and where a hat.

Anybody have an N3FJP config file for an Icom radio?   It appears to not be
model specific,  but I have a 718.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob
Got to n3fjp Settings -- then Rig Interface
Setup for icom but look at cmd to read freq change required as per note.
Ensure rig is set to same baud rate parity data bits etc
Pretty straight fwd.

[BVARC] Problem for the brain trust.

2015-08-07 Thread Rob McClure via BVARC
Hello all,

I have a good friend and former coworker who has a communications problem.
She's in the TXANG and remembered that I was a ham, so she asked if I could
help. I've done all I could (which admittedly, wasn't much) but I did tell
her I'd pass her problem along to the group and see if you could help.

Here's her question:

I know that HF ALE to SMS texting is possible. What I'm wondering is
could that be a workable communications option from an aircraft operating
at 4500-9000'? I've tried a satcom InReach with disappointing results.
Frankly, any and all ideas are entertainable at this point. I have L band
and S band antennas; I can possibly replace with a different antenna as
long as it can occupy the same footprint as a currently installed one. We
have UHF/VHF and FM radios... I will find out more about those...

I had to look up HF ALE, sounds a little like Winmail or Sailmail (the one
ham op sailors use to send email?) but I'm not sure if that's what she
wants. Can anyone help out 'Sarge?'

73 all, Rob, KC5RET
